Re: [WISPA] Draft Items for August 1 FCC Meeting

Ooma does not count as offering VoIP service.  Since you are not billing
the customer (i.e. collecting revenue) or collecting fees (specifically
FUSF) you do not file a 499 nor a 477 for services provided through Ooma.

Atheral White-Label VoIP on the other hand does count, as you are
providing a white-label (vs. a resale) service and billing your
customers.  Some information about our offering can be found here:
https://atheral.co/wlvoip

Happy to discuss offlist with anyone... you can book a meeting with me

For anyone else that is trying to keep up:

NANP is this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_Numbering_Plan

N11 is this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N11_code

I think that Ooma was offering this a year or two ago at WISPA in
Memphis.  We'll check on it.

Please let us know if there are others that may be better.  We're
not exactly in the phone business and just recommend to our customers

As long as it is phone service that reaches NANP numbers including
X11 numbers, it counts as long as it is offered by YOUR company.
Can be white label.

Yes, has to be reflected on 477.

We did a webinar last week on this topic, hope to post for members
soon.

Is there some information about what is considered phone service?

Can we just offer something like Ooma?  Does this phone service
need to be reflected in FCC 477?

Is there a place to go for further information?

Thanks!

RDOF - This is the next $20,400,000,000 (20.4 Billion Dollars)

WISPA has time to meet with the commissioners and discuss up

In all seriousness though, use BBDGE or something similar. Biggest issue I

Most of the good quality outdoor Ethernet cables have a 'strength tape' in the
middle...

UBNT Carrier has a nice piece of plastic in the middle...

Shireen cable has a nice fiber tape ..

etc etc.

If you can tie these cables at the top securely, then there should be no issue
is letting it dangle in the center of the monopole.

Re: [WISPA] Mikrotik - MEF

2014-12-31 Thread Daniel White
Okay my 2 cents - and I'm largely taking my vendor hat off here.

So something to add to the offlist discussion I had with Mike (some Latvian
companies have heard of MEF, and already have roadmaped Y.1731 in their Integra
radios)... there is A LOT of certifications for MEF...

http://metroethernetforum.org/carrier-ethernet/technical-specifications

OAM is just one part of the puzzle. I'm sure Mikrotik, just like many
manufacturers, could say we are MEF compliant (and we (SAF) already are on
things like 9 & 14). Certification costs A LOT of money. Just joining the
organization is $15,000 USD annually. So for a WISP focused manufacturer (and
Mikrotik isn't the only router manufacturer focused on WISP's right?) spending
the huge sums without seeing there will be a return (how many people are
building OAM into their networks... probably a handful here) isn't worth the
investment. So make it worth the investment. :-)

Carrier Ethernet is many things, it's not just one thing. And what it is has
different definitions to different people.

Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) or ITU-T (International Telecommunications Union) or
IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) is not a specific
thing... but a lot of things. Y.1731 is actually an ITU-T recommendation,
similar to IEEE 802.1AG. MEF has an interpretation of Y.1731 included in MEF
17, 30.1, 31, 31.0.1, 35, 35.0.1, 35.0.2, 36, 38, and 39 with test suites 21
and 25.

SAF tends to stick to ITU and IEEE certifications. But since MEF develops
their recommendations from them, we are usually compliant.

An argument could be made that MEF is an organization made up to line the
pockets of a small few by charging exorbitant rates to get equipment or
networks certified based on standards created by ITU and IEEE. Kinda like a
good ol' boys club (together we set the standard, and I promise I'll buy a lot
after we charge you this large amount of money for "Certification" to block
your competition)... Usually on the Tier 1 networks require certification,
which happen to be the ones that created MEF to begin with (and also the
vendors that tend to be heavily involved). Of course anyone can join MEF and
get certification... but the cost barrier to entry is high.

My point being - make sure to be specific to any manufacturer what you are
asking for. Don't say "you need carrier Ethernet" or "you need MEF
compliance/certification" but instead be specific "I'd like Y.1731 compliance
in your equipment." Point to a specific standard... it helps a lot. Maybe
tell them which routerboards specifically need it - some of their hardware
probably can't support it (or at least well).

Anyways I promise the inner-core of Mikrotik has heard of MEF. But all
manufacturers engineer towards demand (or perceived demand in the case of more
visionary ideas) because that is how we make money. I can't promise everyone
in sales, engineering, or tech support at SAF know what MEF is... but I promise
the people that work on our Ethernet stack, that work in Ethernet product
development (why does an RF engineer need to know what MEF is?), and work in
our testing department know.

There is an 8in antenna option... also note the question comes from Canada and
not the USA.

SAF certainly offers it... and it meets the gain and beamwidth requirements

It doesn't have to go very far, but we are wanting 24GHz.

It may be a problem because the FCC rules for that band are pretty strict.
From 15.249:

(3) Antenna gain must be at least 33
dBi. Alternatively, the main lobe
beamwidth must not exceed 3.5 degrees.
The beamwidth limit shall apply to
both the azimuth and elevation planes.
At antenna gains over 33 dBi or
beamwidths narrower than 3.5 degrees,
power must be reduced to ensure that
the field strength does not exceed 2500
millivolts/meter.

So you can't get much smaller than a foot an still stay within the 3.5 degree
beamwidth, at least using oonventional dishes. (To be sure, I haven't done or
seen a computation of exactly how big a dish that would be, or what alternative
shapes would do, but I assume that the uniformity of 24 GHz antennas is based
on that rule.)

Sure. 28GHz/38GHz are both available for PtMP use. Both those are area

Re: [WISPA] question for the group

2014-06-30 Thread Daniel White
Not that I am aware of.

There are a lot of challenges besides range. Sector antennas become very
narrow for instance. A 2ft parabola at this frequency band has a 0.6 degree
main lobe.

And as Josh said, 80GHz is licensed under Part 101 regulations in the US for
PtP applications only, so you wouldn’t be able to deploy even if you found the
gear.

But there are some countries where the bands are legal (just 70GHz, or say
70/80 in Mexico) for PtMP use.

60GHz is much more likely long term.

Can you get permission to use 38 GHz? It is one of those strange bits of
spectrum that was a auctioned off in geographic chunks, so given blocks of
spectrum had exclusive owners in a given area, like cellular. I guess the idea
was that they could then build ptp networks without worrying about
coordination. But it never caught on. FiberTower had accumulated a lot of 38
GHz licenses and was trying to lease them out, and had a deal with Dragonwave.
But they went bankrupt and the licenses were revoked in 2012. Some other
license holders might however be looking to find renters. But since there's no
rent on 23 GHz, and it's usually easy enough to license it, why bother?

38G is right between 23 and 60, with less rain fade than 60 and none of that
oxygen attenuation (why 80 is usually better), but enough rain fade to limit it
to about 2 miles reliably useful range in temperate zones (where are you?).

Re: [WISPA] 38GHz Spectrum Usage

2014-06-30 Thread Daniel White
Your most difficult part might be finding vendors that actually (not just say)
manufacturer equipment for the band and then of course stock it.

SAF for the record does both - and we work with both of the major spectrum
holders in the US (FiberTower and Straight Path). In fact, we have a strategic
partnership with Straight Path where you can purchase our equipment and a 5
year license together: https://www.saftehnika.com/en/news/2014#news-344

Performance wise it will be a little bit less than 23GHz. So it will still be
a short range frequency but frequency coordination can happen as quick as 24
hours so time to deploy is awesome.

Back in my ISP days 38GHz was a key part of our network. Of course those were
different times (spectrum congestion wasn't the issue, but we got a lot of
38GHz gear on the cheap (thanks WinStar!) and the license costs were still very
low.

38/39GHz (depending on who you talk to) is a very popular frequency band for
SAF in Germany specifically, but we also sell a considerable amount of it in
the US and Canada. We maintain the band as an in stock product here. Integra
(our latest product) will be shipping in 38GHz in the next few weeks.

If you have more questions... I'm happy to discuss!

Expedited PCN is 15 day response time.

So long as you are licensing your gear in a Conditional Authorization band… 3
weeks is more than possible from when you first submit paperwork to your
frequency coordinator.

Some coordinators charge more for Expedited PCN response though FYI.

Yep, we use ligowave gear. I can usually count on it providing 50-100mb with
20mb channel if not a lot of interference.

for 200fdx you have one real option. buy yourself a SAF licensed link 11Ghz
2ft dishes high powered. You can get a license as quick as you can buy and
setup the gear. If you think otherwise you should call me I can help you with
getting the gear and the license. Only way to fly and for less than 10K
you have all of it bought, delivered, licensed and installed in about 2-3 weeks.

Hi Wisps,

We are looking for a pair of radios that can do 200 Mbps FDX over 11 miles
(real world, not manufacturer's theoretical marketing promises). We are looking
at using an unlicensed link (most likely 5 GHz) due to the time constraints,
although we're open to suggestions.

The make/model we were considering was Motorola PTP650 with 450 Mbps upgrade
license. We are not wed to Motorola, however. The cost seems to be the
limiting factor at this point.

Another WISP I spoke with mentioned Bridgewave TD60 might be 1 possibility.

Your thoughts?

Re: [WISPA] Advice Needed on 200 Mbps FDX Radios

2014-01-07 Thread Daniel White
Ian,

I assume for BridgeWave you meant their AR60 (or AR60X). The 60GHz frequency
band is not really designed to work past 1/3 of a mile. But for your close in
shots they are great radios for delivering GigE Full Duplex (and it is an
unlicensed band).

Assuming your links are temporary... then 5GHz radios are your best bet.
Guaranteeing 200Mbps Full Duplex will be hard to do though without knowing the
noise floor in your area you will deploy (and of course... since the band is
unlicensed, someone can fire up a transmitter the next day that may knock you
off the air).

24GHz... even in the best of cases... is not a good solution at that distance.
24GHz should be a 3 mile and under band... 5 miles best case.

If they are permanent... 11GHz licensed radios would be the best way to
guarantee 200Mbps Full Duplex service.

Olufemi,

I'm not sure many people on this list will be able to assist you with CFM...
that product was never sold in North America. I can't help you either... I've
personally never worked on them.

Installation manuals:

https://www.saftehnika.com/upload/File/Siebel/ODU_IM_EN.pdf

https://www.saftehnika.com/upload/File/Siebel/CFM-FODU_TD_EN_V%201%207.pdf

I'd strongly recommend creating an account on our website, that way you can
access more information (all of the current CFM documentation is still on our
website, but you must login first to see it).

If you still have questions or need support I recommend reaching out to our
tech support team techsupp...@saftehnika.com<mailto:techsupp...@saftehnika.com>

We are still building and repairing CFM radios if it does come to that.

Good luck!

I have a relatively old SAF CFM FR34 FODU installation at a client site that
has somehow become my problem and can't seem to find a proper user manual
online, can anyone help, also likely that the radio doesn't have the default IP
or password, is there a way to reset these radios without losing the frequency
setting?

It seems that the management port on the POE/ODU doesn't work on these units
and you have to manage them via the data interface, is this correct?

Thanks for your help,

Re: [WISPA] Acros the border services

2013-02-11 Thread Daniel White
It can be done. If you want to do licensed I think it has to be 23GHz if I
recall.

Most companies in Mexico can't hold licenses. the licensed spectrum is
reserved for the telco's.

Probably best to contact a frequency coordinator that can guide you through
the process.

Hi everybody,

I was asked by a bandwidth partner to see if anyone had any experience
providing microwave shots that crossed from the US to Mexico, specifically,
from Texas to Mexico. Since we live nowhere near, this isn't an issue that
I have ever addressed or researched. I am sure there are a whole host of
potential issues.

Likely there are import / export regulations concerning the hardware,
frequency use, licensing issues, etc etc. If this is even possible and
legal, they may be looking for someone's help to build a microwave path that
originates in the US with the other side being in Mexico.

Is there anybody on the list providing services to both sides of the boarder
or anybody with any experience that can say that it isn't possible?

Thanks for your input.

SAF more than likely can do it, but I'm only 95% sure. You'll need to
contact them if it's not a commonly used band in Europe. SAF is in Latvia,
which would presumably make it easier on you if you're in Europe.

Tagging and Containing Rogue Access Points

When the Cisco Unified Wireless Network Solution is monitored using NCS, NCS
generates the flags as rogue access point traps and displays the known rogue
access points by MAC address. The operator can then display a map showing
the location of the access points closest to each rogue access point. The
next step is to mark them as Known or Acknowledged rogue access points (no
further action), Alert rogue access points (watch for and notify when
active), or Contained rogue access points (have between one and four access
points discourage rogue access point clients by sending the clients
deauthenticate and disassociate messages whenever they associate with the
rogue access point).

IANAL but, I am fairly sure P15 only applies to RF, not to the OSI layers.
If the FCC does have control of the OSI layers from a P15 device then people
doing WEP cracking and such are in violation of P15 and that really is a
stretch.

The major substance of Part-15 reads: This device complies with Part 15 of
the FCC Rules. Operation is subject to the following two conditions: (1)
this device may not cause harmful interference, and (2) this device must
accept any interference received, including interference that may cause
undesired operation.

If the poster has actually seen an AP that does what he says it does then it
would be in violation of Part 15 itself and thus an entity could lodge a
formal complaint against the

person or entity that was operating said AP and possibly end up with a
$25,000.00 ticket. YMMV

This one post caught my attention. Has anyone heard of a WiFi AP that will
spoof neighboring networks to intentionally interfere with them, not by
occupying/jamming the spectrum in a brute force way, but rather by
impersonating the other network and rejecting new associations?

23 Ghz is licensed; 24 GHz is unlicensed. Often the same basic radio is
sold for both purposes, just different frequencies and approvals.

I know, some might ask "why"? Because its for a really short link (200 ft)
that has to be 350mb+ FDX, but dont want to use 60G millimeterwave, because
the viable mounting options are not stable enough to prevent sway and safely
reliably support that tight of a narrow beamwidth.

I'm pretty sure, I'll end up doing this in 23G, which allows 1ft dish,
(similar beamwidth to 11G with 2ft). But just wanted to double check rules
for 18 and 11.

I don't think you can do it. 47CFR 101.115 says that both the 11 and 18 GHz
bands need 38 dB antenna gain, same as 6 GHz. Since that's a 6 foot dish at
6 GHz, it would be 2 feet at 18 GHz. The 11 GHz band allows 33.5 dB gain in
some uncongested areas, but that still won't get you down to a foot. 23 GHz
only requires 33.5 dB.

Alex has a good idea to look at 24 GHz unlicensed, if you can find a fast
enough radio. Ohterwise, if you can't deal with higher frequencies or free
space optics, stick with your instinct and go with 23 GHz.

Re: [WISPA] Excede (viasat-1) Satalitte Internet

2012-02-29 Thread Daniel White
It still has exceedingly bad latency just like any other satellite service,
but the capacity figures are true (at least until those spot beams become
more saturated)

Also watch out for the bandwidth caps, and contract terms. I'm not sure I
would use Skype or Vonage on a service like that.

Anyone run into Excede (viasat-1) Satalitte Internet? They claim download
speeds of 12 Megs and can use Skype and Vonage for $60.00 per month and a
$149.95 setup fee.

Any Comments?

I've got a buisness that wants me to setup a ptp link for them I did the
path study and need to be about 50' in the air to get line of site
clearance. The problem is the road right next to them (road is about
200 yards east and the runway starts about 400 yards north.) dead-ends into
a grass run-way for the airport (small town). and its also prettly close to
perpendicular from the main run-way thats probably around 1000 yards away.
I'm assuming it would have to be permitted through FAA and all the wonderful
paperwork that way. I don't think zoning will be an issue but I'm more
concerned about the tower height in relation to the airport.

One end is just us and the 4 other links there are fine.
The other is is us and at least 2 other WISPS, an FM repeater station, some
public service repeaters, some commercial 2-way repeaters and ...
Just looking at the tower, I don't think there is anything new, but I will
ask the tower owner tomorrow.
We changed everything at one end and all but the cable at the other.
Other 5GHz links we have for either tower do not show symptoms of
interference, but that does not mean that isn't our problem.

We are adding a fairly large new tower to our network and it will be a
central hub. I want to bring a number of STP cat-5 lines up the tower in
advance. Will likely be mix of Canopy and Ubiquiti gear on top.
At the base I would like terminate them all at a large surge arrestor bank
before entering the cabinet or building. We will initially have a cabinet
and perhaps later a building. Does anyone know of an outdoor surge arrestor
I can put at the base of the tower that accommodates a number of cat-5 runs
neatly? Something like the standard outdoor canopy surge arrestor except
would protect 8+ cat-5 lines in a larger outdoor enclosure. This would also
serve as a termination point if we move from the cabinet to a building in
the future.

Re: [WISPA] Verizon wants a piece of our pie

2011-10-27 Thread Daniel White
Charles,

I think you should rephrase your statement - Cellular networks (especially
in metropolitan areas) WERE built for coverage. With 4G services, they are
built for capacity. I doubt the coverage metric will change in rural areas
though.

There is also a major question on backhaul. Microwave backhaul may be equal
for 2G/3G networks, but as 4G proliferates it will have a higher dependency
on Fiber or 60GHz/80GHz short range high capacity backhaul. Most rural
sites will only support 11GHz/6GHz for backhaul and therefore lower "found"
capacity they could deliver via fixed wireless.

On the other hand, WISP's can be nimble to all of these demands, at a much
lower equipment cost.

FTTH of course is a different metric altogether. Verizon wireline loves to
plow fiber now.

Anyways, my 2 cents. I could certainly be wrong :-)

I have a dissenting opinion...

>It all comes down to a simple economics in the end. Who can most cost
>effectively provide broadband.

A cellular network is built for coverage

Additionally, large companies, from a scale and operations perspective, will
tend to put the same equipment everywhere

What that means is in order to offer the nationwide network, that the tower
in the rural area that's required to cover that stretch of highway where
there's only a town of 1,000 people will have the same equipment and
capacity as the tower in downtown Chicago that has 1,000 simultaneous users

So in rural areas, where the costs of the tower, backhaul and base station
have already been amortized and paid for to fulfill their coverage
requirements, but many of these towers are sitting at 5-10% capacity

In their mind, to add another 100 or so fixed wireless users off an AP and
putting them in a lower QoS bucket (so the primary mobile customers aren't
affected when fixed customers start slamming Netflix) is "found money" --
self installs are quite nice when putting out +60 dBi EIRP at the tower with
700 MHz on licensed spectrum with zero noise floor

At the end of the day when a WISP puts
up a 'cell' site it is probably costing them 1/100th of what it costs the
cellco to do so. The equipment used is most likely 1/100th the cost at the
'AP' and 1/10th at the CPE and the spectrum that the cellco uses is not
free.

Even when you take into account that the cellco operates on a much longer
ROI and they can get some economy of scale on certain things I don't see how
they can overcome the price difference to be able to effectively compete
against a WISP, especially given their lack of spectrum. Sure you get a
much better noise floor, but they have fewer channels to deal with. And
from a cost perspective it is a lot harder to justify putting up micropops
as a cellco. I know plenty of WISPs that can afford to put a micro-pop up
for 3 customers. I do see how a cellco could afford to do that for eveny 20
times that number.

Deep pockets only last so long when you are losing money.

Where will the link be located? 80GHz is unlicensed in some parts of the
world. In the US, BridgeWave includes the 80GHz license with the radio, so
that shouldn't affect the purchasing decision.

Taking my vendor hat off, I would avoid FSO if you can. Very susceptible to
changes in the environment, low MTBF, twist/sway is a major concern.

If you got any questions - feel free to ask off or onlist.

Re: [WISPA] Fiber On Air (gigabit wireless)

2011-10-26 Thread Daniel White
The limit is based on O2 absorption. It is hard limit, not hardware or
software based but atmospheric attenuation based.

2.5km is usually a slam dunk for 80GHz.

It's not clear if that limit is hard (timing-based) or soft (loss-based).
If you're in a relatively dry area, and it's a soft limit, you might get a
bit of extra range. But I suspect that only would apply in FE mode, not GE
mode, which needs more power.

I'd also check Dragonwave, whose brochures are behind a registration/mail
wall. But reliable GE for that distance on microwave is a stretch.

The fSONA product is free space optical, not microwave. It might do the job
but FSO requires a genuine, true, real line-of-sight path.
