[WISPA] Email Hosting

2010-03-25 Thread Steve Barnes
I know that this has been discussed here last year but I am looking for updates.

I am wondering what others are using for email hosting. My current service is
low grade at best and I really do not want it brought back in-house. I only
have about 500 Subs and 300 emails. Filtering, storage, bandwidth, and backup
are all too much of a pain I would just prefer an affordable easy to transfer
to service that doesn't kill my budget. I know Google has a service but I have
not been able to get anyone to tell me that it is the perfect answer. I would
also like a option to be able to give some clients an Exchange type of account,
(sync to outlook or Blackberry) for more money and everyone else just a regular
pop.

Any recommendations?

[WISPA] Email hosting

2010-09-21 Thread Justin Mann
Hello,

We are currently using Everyone.net 3rd-party email hosting provider for
about 60 domains and 1000 email accounts. We are very displeased with
their service and have decided to make a change. Last time it was a bit
of a shot in the dark, this time we would like to make a choice we can
stick with for a long time.

What 3rd-party providers have been successful for you, in the 1000+ user
range? Responsive support is our number one demand, followed by service
reliability. Does anyone have experience with Google mail services for
business? It is one among several we are considering.

Contact me offlist, I can probably whip something up, depending on how
many addresses you have.

Gmail has this in beta, but I think you're only allowed 40 or so email
addresses per domain. Also, comedy Hosted Hotmail option (they seriously
do offer this, I don't have the link handy but I could dig it up). If you
want a squillion ads and 2MB mailboxes, though, it's there.

Fasthosts.com. 50.00/month unlimited domains and unlimited standard
email accounts. Not saying that is the beat solution, just what we
use. Completely white label if you get all the extras that have one
time costs.

Re: [WISPA] Email Hosting

2010-03-25 Thread Robert West
I dumped email hosting a couple of years ago and haven't looked back.

In my situation, I found that over 2 thirds of the subs WERE NOT using the
email but were with mostly Yahoo and a few other online services. I found
myself having to deal with cleaning out junk mail from stagnant email
accounts every few months and dealing with the mail server, backups and all
that other stuff that I really had no time for.

I kept the users who were on the system, stopped assigning email to the new
subs and eventually we had zero mail users and I was done. If someone
insists on mail, I'll assign one and charge an extra 5 bucks a month for it
and add it to our domain which we now just host with a webhosting company.
Simple and cheap. We've all had this discussion before and yes, I know it's
cool to have your service name in emails being sent out all over but I
really get no advertisement from that unless they are sending the emails
local and even with that, the area already knows us.

Ah. The joy of not getting the "My emails not workin'" phone
calls.

After trying in-house and other hosting for years I finally ended up
at surpasshosting.com about 5 years ago. They use WHM and CPanel, have
very few issues and quick responses when they do. They are not the
cheapest but not expensive either. While in Florida, I visited their
twin data centers. Done very professional.

perfect answer.  I would also like a option to be able to give some clients
an Exchange type of account, (sync to outlook or Blackberry) for more money
and everyone else just a regular pop.

Any recommendations?

The control panel is very slick. There is an import tool for creating all of
your customer accounts. Old email can be migrated through the control panel
using IMAP, or the customer can import their mail using POP3. You just need to
leave your old server running and access itr via IP.

Your email URL is hosted by Google so if you co-ordinate it correctly it's a
pretty smooth transition. we had to do it with a gun to our head as our iMail
server failed and I had not completed the setup of the Google Hosted system
(procrastination cost me).

Here is the instruction page for customer to activate and import their mail:

 Dear airCloud customer,
airCloud Communications has partnered with Google to bring you a host of
powerful new features:

Gmail<http://mail.aircloud.net/> ~ All of the features and functionality of a
GMail account without having to change your email address, or lose your old
emails.
Calendar<http://calendar.aircloud.net/> ~ Organize your schedule and share
events with friends. Sync email calendar, and tasks from one place
Docs<http://docs.aircloud.net/> ~ Create and share your work online and access
from any computer. Collaborate online Home Page<http://start.aircloud.net/> ~
Create a personalized start page with weather, mail, calendar, or other gadgets
Mobile<http://www.google.com/mobile/> ~ Access your email, calendar, and docs
from your web-enabled phone. You can also sync your ActiveSync enabled phone

To access your email please log into the new server with your current username
and password at http://mail.aircloud.net<http://mail.aircloud.net/>. You can
contact supp...@aircloud.com<mailto:supp...@aircloud.com> to have your old
emails migrated to the new server once you have logged in and activated your
new account.

POP3 email users such as Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird,
Blackberry, etc will need to set up their account for POP access once your
account has been activated.
- Log into the new server at the address above to activate your account
- Go to Settings --> Forwarding and POP and
1. Enable POP for mail that arrives from now on.
2. Select keep AirCloud Communications Mail's copy in the inbox
3. Configure your email client using the Configuration instructions

Unfortunately the old server does not have a mechanism to export your contact
list. This is not really a major problem as Gmail allows you to search for
emails using names and keywords so locating an email address on the new server
is very simple.

We are very proud to be partnering with Google and are confident that once you
start using the new server you will be very pleased with how well everything is
laid out and all of the added features such as Calendar, Tasks, Chat, WebPages,
Docs, and Mobile applications.

I guess it depend on how lean you want to run. The less systems I have to
maintain, rebuild, or even think about the more time I can spend selling.

To me .35/box is a pretty decent price for
- multiple redundant servers
- multiple colos
- army of tweaks maintaining the system
- world-class spam and AV
- Google Apps
- Partnering with the 800lb Gorilla

Re: [WISPA] Email Hosting

2010-03-26 Thread Larry Yunker

I don't know what Google's ISP solution is, but I decided long ago that
google provides me better spam filtering than I can possibly hope to
maintain in house. Let's face it, gmail handles such a large volume of
email, it can much more accurately identify and filter out junk based on
pattern recognition, dead-end boxes, etc. than any independent ISP can hope
to find.

So, I still "use" my own email accounts, but they all get filtered through a
gmail account (either through aliases or forwarding rules) before I ever
pick up my mail.

The nice part about this solution is that it enables me to continue to
assign common aliases - like sales, service, support, etc., I have
"personalized" email with my own domain name, and if I wanted to, I could
still drop in rules in the mail server to trigger automated processes based
on email source or content. Using gmail in conjunction with your own email
server is the best of both worlds - all the control, but a lot less hassle.

- Larry

I guess it depend on how lean you want to run. The less systems I have
to maintain, rebuild, or even think about the more time I can spend
selling.

To me .35/box is a pretty decent price for
- multiple redundant servers
- multiple colos
- army of tweaks maintaining the system
- world-class spam and AV
- Google Apps
- Partnering with the 800lb Gorilla

Re: [WISPA] Email hosting

2010-09-21 Thread Jeromie Reeves
I am happy with google for email. They are currently doing a forced
change to the service that is going to make life less fun for people
hosting with them for a bit. If you have say www.foo.com email hosted
with them, and your user bar has the email b...@foo.com AND has a
personal google account (igoogle) registered using said b...@foo.com,
then they will be forcibly combined come this fall. Other then this
very evil move, they have been great. Since they opened up the GFYD I
have setup 50+ domains and have not had issues or had to go back for
anything really related to Google. Users tho, are users. I still
recommend them and people have told me that if you talk with them
upfront and show what you will be moving to them, they will work with
you on price. If I ever decide to move away from google, I would move
email back in house. The primary reason I moved was the data centers I
had hosting in BOTH experienced extreme outages (one the power room
blew up, the other had '3 physically redundant paths' taken out by the
same backhoe). Google took 20 min to setup and restore working email
services.

We run ours on in-house, on a cluster of on Centos Servers
But if I had to out-source, I would consider Tucows email service before
Google.

Tucows service tend to be more suited for ISP/NSP's and they don't
market to yours and our customers.

What user email client are you using? Are your users happy with it? We
are considering hosting email ourselves, as we used to, but we need an
email client that is a little more full-featured and less clunky than
the older web clients we were used to.

Re: [WISPA] Email hosting

2010-09-21 Thread Faisal Imtiaz
We are using an HSphere Control Panel on a Cluster of Centos Servers.
The Web Mail interface is Horde or SQWebMail, you can choose from the
Main Page. Plus the Mail Server supports any POP3 or IMAP4 compliant
Email Client of one's choosing.

We use another outfit for keeping our Servers secure and patched up and
Updated on a regular basis (runs $75/month for each server a total of 4
machines).

For Anti-Virus/Anti-Spam service we use Katharion, now owned by GFI

The combination has been working well. Our main issue with outside mail
servers has been that we needed a solution for Web hosting as well and
not just Email hosting.

Zimbra is ahead of all of those, and it is a complete system that scales very
well and is based on open software.

I think Horde has definitely gotten better. I'll check out the others.

We migrated an acquired domain from Everyone.net to our server
running FreeBSD, Cyrus-IMAPd, Postfix, Squirrelmail and Roundcube
mail. Everyone.net does way too much advertising to the users.

If you don't want to run your own, find a WISP you like nearby, or
not if you worry about competition, who does. Pay them what you
have been paying Everyone.net. Keep it in the family.

60 domains with 1000 accounts is a pretty easy add to an existing
ISP style system, or a complete seperate (possibly virtual) mail
server.

Exactly the setup we're running, except we just phased out SquirrelMail.

If I had to host with a company I'd likely choose FastMail (www.fastmail.fm).

Justin,

You can host that on a small server of your own. Other than the upkeep,
etc, its not expensive. You can also give control of your domains to
your end users IT departments, so you don't have to reset a password etc
though a webased system. WE offer servers including the
hardware/software preinstalled or we can install software for ya. Shoot
me off-list if you are interested. The software is well under 1k.

Re: [WISPA] Email hosting

That sounds attractive. I made the ultimate decision to move to outsourced
email due to one driving factor: fear. Fear of losing our server and not
having a backup, or having a backup that was too old. Nightly backups of
the mail server is just not enough. With this many users, email is being
delivered non-stop, so if you don't have up-to-the-moment mirroring, you've
lost data when your server goes down.

We found it was cheaper than doing it in-house, and better. You can get

Re: [WISPA] Email hosting

2010-09-21 Thread Chuck Hogg
There is not a free Google Partner edition any longer. Josh got in on a
period when it was free, and loves to brag about it! Once he gets passed
his alloted accounts, it won't be free any longer (I have some domains under
it as well when it was free, but not my primary ISP domains). There is
Google Standard that is free for a limited (50) number of email accounts.
We just signed up with Google Partner edition this past month,
.32/user/mth. It has more options for migration and for other things than
the standard edition does. s...@ikano.com is Shaun's email account if you
are interested in signing up with them.

And yes, we also got the notice that the Apps accounts for email, are going
to be migrated to all of the other Google services.

Regards,

Chuck

Email? I stopped with the email long ago however, we have some that INSIST
on it so we just add them to our email account on our host. We pay a whole
100 bucks for a shared hosting account at IX Hosting. If they want email,
we just add it to our "unlimited' accounts for a 5 buck a month charge.

Just imagine when a customer sends out an email asking for someone to renew
their credit card or something else - and uses your domain... and sends it to
your customer(s)

I know a few this has happened with.

It is always best to use something different.

just my 2 cents.

just make sure if you do it you pay for all the extras to reduce spam and

Andy, how do you like your Atmail?

Are you using their hosted service, or do you have your own server?

How is it for allowing domain admins to administer their own domains, while
still letting the ISP have access to ALL accounts?

It looks like the user is in control of their own spam settings, right? Is
that working well?

How is the support from Atmail?

We're looking at hosting our own mail again, not 3rd-party hosting any more.

Thanks for the info!

We're using Courier Mail. www.tallon.com handles the servers for us.

We've had very little trouble with it.

I'm thinking of tucows though. Just not sure if I can justify the increase
in costs vs. what my in-house costs are.

We used to use Squirrel Mail and I though it was unprofessional. The
Everyone.Net web interface is very good. It looks alot like Roundcube...
