RE: [WISPA] trango repairs

2007-07-29 Thread Cliff Leboeuf
I too have used Jack's company.

Though I have also seen some short-lived repairs, I have been please with
Jack's responsiveness and willingness to stand behind his work.

JO, as far as Jack's signature, I can't take credit, nor will I accept blame. :)

$350+

That makes sense.

FoxAtlas-
The good news for us is it has not been a big problem for us because we
really haven't had many failed units.

I'm surprised how long they have lasted working in the field.
We keep the cases of failed ones, befor ehitting the trash bin, in case the
clips break off one in the field.

Not that we have many units that fail.

I'm suspecting it will be more of a problem as time goes on. It would be
nice to find a $100 repair cost, to help keep these things another 5 year in
the air :-)

I'm talking mainly about radios we pay around $350 each for brand new
at $200 for repair, we have just been piling them on a shelf... but if we
could find someone to fix them for $100, it would be worth it.

The FOX and Atlas units we just throw in the garbage. :(

If you are referring to Fox Atlas CPEs, that sell for $200 new, I'd agree
a lower priced alternative would be needed to justify repairing.
But is that realistic to find, (for specialize proprietary radio

Re: [WISPA] trango repairs

2007-07-19 Thread George Rogato
Travis, if it was a very common problem with all your units and you know
what needs to be replaced, there's probably a company near you that does
board component replacements.

I know a guy who owned a company that did just this.

If there is a lot of units and it's all the same parts you could get
them repaired for next to nothing on a per unit basis.

You have to find the company in your area that does board component
replacements.

Travis: Isn't the other factor also that you have to
buy some brands in "100 bundle pack/500 bundle " and
therefore it is not as simple as just "replace with
new because its cheaper than repairing"??

Regarding unrepairable Atlas and Fox, I think you can
get some money at electronic recycler in your areas.
We have several programs here in Silicon Valley.

Tom - I worked with field technicians, Call Centers
and I trained Call Centers in previous life and agree
with you. I think it is also a training issue and I.T.
issue. I recall my Call Center/RMA standard operating
procedures (SOPs) required just what you said - the
more detail the better in RMA. But the actual issue
was my Call Center staff didn't have enough space in
the paperwork to write in more detail, or I didn't
provide them enough training.

There is a group that studies this:

Re: [WISPA] trango repairs

2007-07-19 Thread Tom DeReggi

Jack,

I respect you for accepting repair jobs, where you do not charge for
unrepaired items. There is a real cost to the intial troubleshooting.

I think its great to have one more option for possible repair.

I'll share some personal insight. This is not directed at ezlink, but al
lreapir centers in general. One of the biggest risks in using repaired goods
is the cost to isntall the radio far exceeds the cost of the repair, often
far greater than the cost of a new radio. So if a board comes back not
properly repaired, but stated as repaired, its costly to the client, and not
worth the client considering future repairs, if the track record is not
consistent. Further, if a repair comes back stated as unrepaired, the
client wants to know for sure whether that is a product that needs to be
thrown in the trash or resend out to a more competent or more willing repair
centers. For example, how does the client know that the board was truly
blown versus a reapir center that jsut felt it wasn;t cost effective to
investigate whether it was repairable, based on the tools and resources he
had? These two problems are the two problems that frustrate clients. Whats
ironic is that there is an easilly solution to this problem, and its called
"documenting summary of work". I have found that client want to and can
trust their repair vendors, and all that is needed is a communication
process that shows the reapir center did their best and what they did. The
more detailed the repair troubleshooting log is, the more confortable the
client feels. For example, if a client reports a problem such as "locks up
when hot", if the vendor responds, "put heat gun on board for 30 minutes, no
lockup occurred" or "replaced FAN, no lockup for 30 minutes", it would
infer that the repair center heard the reported problem accurately, and
attempted to investigate the actual problem. Or "Ethernet Chipset fried to
a crisp, no repair possible", would let a client know clearly why its not
repairable from the specific repair center. The client could then choose to
send it to a repair center that advertised "chipset level repairs possible".
These are just examples. But what I hate to see, is jsut get a radio back
that says "repaired" or "not repaired" with little detail, because it does
not give me that cosy feeling of an answer that I can rely on.

I do not know ezlink's policies and proceedures, but I'd be interesting in
hearing how Ezlink handles it.

Your tech did state that one was repaired, when in fact it was not.

Actually, if they come back repaired... Thats a pretty good price,
considering from a manufactuer, that has the tools and knowledge to verify a
proper repair.
Atleast, if we are talking about the higher cost radios 900, 5830, APs,
etc

If you are referring to Fox Atlas CPEs, that sell for $200 new, I'd agree a
lower priced alternative would be needed to justify repairing.

But is that realistic to find, (for specialize proprietary radio equipment)?

Jack: In general, there are less troubleshooter/radio
repairman training classes and vocational programs in
the public school system. I had a discussion about
this with my 82 year old buddy who is an old Motorola
radioman and ARRL member. Part of this stems from
the "buy it and chuck it and replace it with new"
mentatlity. Many components in seperate are more
expansive then the whole. I have an old Canopy 5.7
radio in my workshop and I think I'm going to just
pull it apart and look at it to learn. But where does
one "buy an ethernet femaale jack"? just one.

RE: [WISPA] trango repairs

2007-07-19 Thread Larry A Weidig
I cannot comment about Trango, but we have used them in the past
for Alvarion gear. Our results have been a large number returned no
repair (which we were not charged for), but a large number of the
"repaired" radios failing after being put back in service. Most of the
time for the exact issue they were sent in for.
This of course causes a number of issues. First, the actual
repair costs are much higher (usually keeps 50% of the radios repaired).
Second, you have a frustrated customer with a broken radio. Finally, you
have a truck roll to repair.
Unfortunately for us at this point we are just discarding radios
and writing them off as there does not seem to be a good repair option
we have found. This is my personal experiences.

When you send us something that has been destroyed, its rather difficult to
repair. Some units are beyond repair, even at the manufacturer. Remember
we do not charge for unrepaired units.

I sent them 5 units last month, one 5830 AP 5800 Su and 3 Fox 5800. Over a
month later they sent them back to me, none repaired.

I am working with another company that is training on the repair, may have
another option soon.

Travis,

I have never sent him anything to repair for me, but I have sold him lots
of the old Alvarion 3mbps stuff from some other ISP buyouts. They seemed to
be nice folks and have been at it for a long time.
