2004-09-02 Thread 7 sinz
Hi,
Im a junior desinger for a company based in auckland, new zealaand.
im having some issues with floats for mac IE 5.2, and really would
lappreciate it if someone could help point out the best plan of attack to
fix it.

Id like to point out that we did not do the design for this site ( you'll
choke..trust me ),
we've only been asked to make it work in all browsers, theres just alot of
nothing happening design wise so dont be shocked when you see the page :p

The test

RE: [WSG] After CSS?

2004-07-23 Thread 7 sinz
So, what are your skillsets?
With this information I can tell you where I would move
you if you were in my employ.
Right now CSS/JS/PHP/Flash and pretty much any image editor.
I still love design, whether it's print, web or interactive, but i also like
the flavours that CSS/DOM/XML can bring to the table. So i very much so
headed in the direction of learning more about DOM scripting and XML..along
the way reading adn learning more about accessiabilty and CSS3.

Re: [WSG] After CSS?

2004-07-23 Thread 7 sinz
Andy Budd Said:

As Jeremy Keith says, "The DOM is the new CSS" so my advice would be
to look to the DOM as your next adventure in web standards.
I've been quite active in learning W3C DOM, i find PPk's articles
invaulable, very straight forward even for the beginner scripter to learn
the code. And i can see the great potential with DOM that i wont stay a
beginner for long.
I also take into the count about previous comments, about accessibility to
the disabled, i feel that all should enjoy the web// and I'm pretty much
going to build my professional career on that ideal.

Thanks for all those who replide, i was somewhat shy about posting the
thread, mainly i thought i was going to get alot of " you'll never be a
fluent CSS designer" but you guys have sure chucked that notion out the
window.

Thanks again guys

[WSG] After CSS?

2004-07-23 Thread 7 sinz
Hi all,
Im an 19 yer old desinger, with a particular interest in web design. For the
last 8 motnhs i've been huddled up in my workspace practising my art
learning the ins and out of CSS and pretty much learning the language to a
T.

Anything i used to do with nested tables I now write with CSS, layouts
dependant on the viewport are atill time consuming to make, and depending on
browser support/target audience & scale of the project they can be time
consuming, still i managae to pull through.
Fixed width layouts are no brainers to use, i feel once you've comfortably
mastered positioning in CSS you pretty much can design any layout you cut
outta of Photoshop/other image editor.
Not to say that thats all you need to know when developing with CSS, but it
is a main part of structual design, once you can write it fluently theres no
stopping or holing back with what kind of structure your static design may
be.

Now, it took me a while to get here, but we all got to start somewhere.
But what now? How can you prepare for the next specification, new attributes
and selectors, is there a test suite for CSS3?. Im a graphic designer,
who's passion for web development introduced me to one of the strongest
client side languages available to any developer, now that im at a point of
"speaking fluent CSS" what do i tackle next, what new CSS3 flavours can i
focus on for the next wave of innovation?

Kind Regards

Ok, my question is why the H2? What standard are you trying to promote with
that concept?
none
its a concept, something i felt like doing- you can use it with any tag, i
chose a heading- because on the project i use it on; the links are headings.
If it's not your fancy, dont use it.

Re: [WSG] Linking Background Images

2004-07-04 Thread 7 sinz
yes there is a way you can link background images; but a little more mark up
is required.

lets say you have

and styles as
h2#bG{background: url(image.gif) no-repeat;height:20px;width:220px}
now adding some extra markup inside that h2 as follows

with styles as
h2.save a{display:block;height:20px;width:220px}
you've now got a clickable background image.
I use this tech throughout a project im working on right now...i call it the
Steven Carlisle Background Click or SCBclik for short :p

I'd like your opinion on these two images (please remember that I'm a

I hope you like them :)

RE: [WSG] What Editors do you guys use?

2004-06-05 Thread 7 sinz
i still hand code, but i use Dreamweaver MX 2004, mainly because it saves
half the design process, as i can preview in different browsers to see what
my site is looking liike. It just makes life a hella alot easier. Im not
going to come out and say that dreamweaver is everyones solution for
editior, but for me, espeacially with it's improvements with CSS handling,
Dreamweaver MX 2004 is my choice for both CSS & HTML editing.

I have tried stylemaster, but i really hated the interface, i'd rather use
topstyle that stylemaster anyways, i feel that topstyle is a better
programmed app then stylemaster by far.

so my picks would be Dreamweaver MX 2004 for HTML ( and CSS ) & for a CSS
editor id use Topstyle.

hope that helps

It's not tabular data, it's a linear stream of images with captions. One
way
of looking at it is to take the thumbs and associated text and jumble the
sequence; do that with a proper table grid and you'll have a mess since the
row and columnar formats will be meaningless.

For instance --
Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat Sun
 Cost 10 20 20 10 20 20 20
 Unit 3 5 2 6 4 1 7
Cost/Sat = 20. It's position must remain fixed to make sense, although it
may possibly remain true in another location. Incorporate the Unit value of
the matrix and moving anything invalidates the results. This is a table;
rows and columns point to specific cells; rows and columns have meaning.
Move the cell values within the grid and the results are nonsense.
Not so with a sequence of images (unless, of course, you're ordering them
alphabetically but that's not the issue).
Make sense?

They haven't deprecated the table tag, yet, have they? Maybe I'm just a
beginner, but I can easily
follow the difficulty folks are having with 'pure css.' It was fun for me
until I saw that a
hackless site was a near impossibility, even if it's just the 3-pixel jog
hack (which doesn't work
for lists).

think the jury is going to be out for a long time on this one. There really
is no 'hack free' way
to deal with css and cross browser support. Sure there have been plenty of
'elegant' uses of
tableless markup, but when it takes a simple process and turns it into a
morass of problems and
surprises, it really does cross the line.

Until the 'table police' show up and put on the cuffs, the best thing is do
what is expedient, and
what is effective and dependable. Whether for layout or tabular data, the
use of tables, and their
predictable results should not be discounted or frowned upon--especially if
the table makes sense
when linearized.

What you are trying to do 'fits the bill' for a legitimate table. Until CSS
reaches the point where
proper centering, width and height is possible across all browsers and all
platforms without hacks
and kludges, hybrid designs should be expected, and not discouraged. As
long as tables are still a
part of html, I say use them.

[WSG] my review of IE7

2004-06-04 Thread 7 sinz
" Well after some careful planning, i decided to discard the extra classes
and use Dean edwards IE7 "

My thoughts ?
IE 7 gives a CSS designer a lot of leg room when developing CSS based
layouts.
But my main :focus was using IE7 on things like, :hover and [attr="value"].
It turned out great, althought i have to back myself if the user hasnt got a
jS enabled browser ( using classes ) but all in all the process so far has
been great.

an example would be suckerfish menus, although they use DOM to make IE see
the second-level, you still have to decalare extra classes ( how many
depends on how complex you're menu is ) and in my case the extra markup was
a pain. IE7 gave me the abilty to use my regualr markup; and by adding a
simple link to the hover stylesheet i was able to achieve the suckerfish,
wtihout the suckerfish.

i kno some people may critique it's use, and i have had problems with older
versions of Opera ( the latest version displays ery thing ok ) and i have
tested it on stand alone version of IE, the results were the same as IE6.
my review of IE7, it's a outstanding piece of work and i'll continue usin'
it until it fails.

will vanish. Now i've tried a lot of coding to get it to work, and im
really
considering using a flash alternative.

Im not after anyone to 'do they work for me' , i've already done everything
i can think of, and im hoping Russ or any other members of the guru sqaud

i've attached the file if you'd care to have a look and help me out.

Yep. That do indeed work. I didn't believe it until I tried it, and I'm
still not sure I understand it. But it works, and it's clean and simple.
I
assumed I was missing something basic and I was right. ;-)

So setting the left and right margins as "auto" magically accomplishes
centering... because if they're both auto, then they must be equal, and the
only way to have both left and right margins equal is to center the object.
Sweet. I did NOT see that coming. Elegant, but not obvious. Exactly what I
was hoping for.
Thanks! I am only an egg. This has been a good (and useful) introduction
to the list.
Cheers,
Paul
p.s. I'll buy a beer for the first person who correctly identifies the
"egg"
reference. :-) Of course, you'll have to come to Vancouver for it...

Microsoft built a covenient IE-only hack into their browser engine -
conditional comments. Check em out here:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/workshop/author/dhtml/overview/ccomment_ovw.asp

Essentially, you put in code like this:

Everything else thinks it's a comment (actually it is) but IE will parse
it. And you can certainly use that to target IE 5 but not 5.5...

Basicaly what im trying to do is create a CSS based drop down menu with
the mark-up length of Mezzoblue's m0se menus, but the funcuality of
Suckerfish menus. But im getting no where at the moment, if anyone out
there is willing to throw in some suggestions it would be great.
What extra mark-up? The suckerfish code is lean and mean... I just went
back and had another look, and there's nothing there in the STRUCTURAL
mark-up.

If you're talking about the CSS, that's also pretty lean, with the
exception of a few extra selectors in there for IE.

That only leaves the added JavaScript, which again is there only for IE to
work.

If you choose to support IE, then there HAS to be JavaScript in there, and
there has to be some extra CSS selectors. I'm not that familiar with the
Mezzoblue version, but the same basic rules apply.

No one need reply; by adding a relative positioning to #login, and removing
the background image i was able to create a nice clean seamless affect for

Hi 7,

Can you please supply a link to the page in question as well as the CSS
file(s).
In order to help we need to be able to see it in action in case there is
something else in the code affecting or conflicting with it. This also
lets
us see what language and version you are using and whether or not you are
operating in quirks mode depending on your doctype.
