Re: [wsjt-devel] WSJT-X parsing of the country file, specifically 4U1A (and others)

2023-12-08 Thread robert evans LAST_NAME via wsjt-devel
East Thrace or Eastern Thrace, also known as Turkish Thrace or European Turkey,
is the part of Turkey that is geographically a part of Southeast Europe. It
accounts for 3.03% of Turkey's land area and 15% of its population. The largest
city is Istanbul, which straddles the Bosporus between Europe and Asia.

Asiatic Turkey is east of the Bosporus.

The Bosporus is where the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas broke through
and flooded the Black Sea.

I spent some time in Karamursel, Sinop, and Incirlik which are in
Asiatic Turkey.

Karamursel had a elephant cage AN/FLR-9 until they bombed
Cyprus and they closed this base when USA came out against it.

Sinop is a spit of land that sticks out in the Black Sea and was a NATO
listening post just south of Crimea and might still be.
Incirlik is still a very busy base down near the Mediterranean Sea.

Re: [wsjt-devel] IC-705 little to no decodes

2023-12-06 Thread robert evans LAST_NAME via wsjt-devel
An update of my windows IC-705 testing ...

The asus win11 i9 laptop / WSJT-X 2.7.0-rc2 / IC-705
still was NOT decoding.
Everything, including rig control, was working fine.
(BTW this IC-705 firmware ver has a FT8 preset.)

Installed fldigi 4.2.? that i use for nbems traffic nets
for thor22 msfk Olivia etc. That worked well even
made a psk31 qso.

When i went back to WSJT-X 2.7.0-rc2 it started
decoding just fine! And I made a couple qso on
FT8 just fine. And my posts are on PSK rep as
well as stations that hear me!

I wonder if Icom and Yeasu will offer usb drivers
for linux soon.

Back to linux for now.

Re: [wsjt-devel] WSPR and Diversity Receive

2023-12-05 Thread robert evans LAST_NAME via wsjt-devel
Having used diversity reception techniques as
far back as the 70s and knowing it was used in
the 40s to improve RTTY reception for mil comms,
that improvement is possible.

An early technique used 2 coherent R-390As and
dual fsk demod unit. The antennas were often
of different polarization because they knew
the fading was often due ordinary and
extraordinary propagation though the ionosphere
producing changes in polarization.
But, sometimes just two horizonal antennas far
enough apart offer improvements, for example.
Diversity reception made RTTY via the HF
ionosphere very reliable in the 40s.

Present day wifi benefits from direct sequence
spread spectrum but also mimo.

Knowing the present code in wsjt does not offer
hooks for diversity, but I asked Joe once did it
ever or was it once considered?

There are now two eme antennas at dvra.

Re: [wsjt-devel] IC-705 little to no decodes

2023-12-05 Thread robert evans LAST_NAME via wsjt-devel
All good suggestions. Thank You.

Last night..
Double checked everything on the old dell i3 win10
and it started decoding just fine.

The thing is, that it is so slow, i loose track of what
i did and didn't do when i make changes.

And it takes forever to reboot.

I keep it around because it is about the bare
minimum system to support the usb drivers
now used by windows for modern radios.
ft-991, ft-dx10, ic-9700, ic-705, etc. etc. etc.

So, as a beta test of WSJT-X 2.7.0-rc2 on a
old dell i3 win10 with the IC-705 it worked fine.

Back to the asus win11 i9 laptop / IC-705 :
When WSJT-X 2.7.0-rc2 did decode the
dt was like 0.2 or less.
I'll revisit that soon.

Thanks Again.

[wsjt-devel] IC-705 little to no decodes

2023-12-04 Thread robert evans LAST_NAME via wsjt-devel
Using a IC-705 over the weekend and after
installing the usb drivers in a asus win11
i9 laptop i started WSJT-X 2.7.0-rc2.

The rig control worked fine and the signals
where being displayed in the spect graph,
but no decodes. Double checked the time set.
Still no decodes.

Walked away for many minutes and there were
decodes when i got back, but only a few.
Installed WSJT-X 2.6.1 and tried again.
Same behavior.

Every once in a awhile it would decode a
frame and then none for long periods of
time even though the spectrum graph showed
signals on the waterfall continuously.

Switched to an old dell i3 win10 laptop
and saw the same behavior with wsjt-x.
Tried fldigi and it decoded Olivia and
psk31 as well as cw no problem.

Tried JS8 as well - no problem.

Back to WSJT-X and double checked the
settings. Every once in a long while
it might decode what looks like a frame.

Re: [wsjt-devel] FT8 on 160m with Beverage antenna

2023-11-13 Thread robert evans LAST_NAME via wsjt-devel
When they built and installed the beverages they noticed they
had just as much noise as the other antennas if not more.

I modeled the Beverage and discovered it was a very high
loss antenna. The soil was the lossy element and if you
tried to reduce the loss by tuning the termination and
matching networks you compromised the front to back
ratios and lost directionality.

The performance of the Beverage was dependent on soil
characteristics and difficult to model and variable to
to due to rain etc.

We put an oscillator in the undesired direction.
Before a contest the termination and matching was
tweaked to null the oscillator in the park while favoring
European stations.

The Beverage is a lossy antenna with the least loss
in the desired direction when correctly terminated and
matched for the soil conditions.

Re: [wsjt-devel] Memory leak in 2.7.0 rc1?

2023-05-26 Thread robert evans LAST_NAME via wsjt-devel
Once when using a microsoft C compiler
in windows 7 a memory leak appeared..

The person i was working with blamed it
on the fact that i was using pointers.

BUT

Once we reduced down to the minimum
code that produced the leak it contained no
pointers.

It was caused by only that compiler.

It was used to collect data on a lifetest
of 30 lasers over time.

We determined with the largest memory we
could install it would fail in 5 weeks.

So we said that once a month we needed to
take the system down to measure and calibrate
signal paths and detector drift.

Is it compiler dependent?

Aye Captain Joseph & crew,

2.7.0-rc1 win7 i5 sdrplay rx now on 40m &
still there posting to pskreporter now.

2.7.0-rc1 win7 i3 laptop ft-991 made a few more
qsos no problems.

2.7.0-rc1 win10 i3 laptop ftdx-10 :
At first a 'no audio' warning..
Went into settings and the correct USB device was
selected but it said 'not found'.
Hit 'ok' to close that settings window and it
started working.
Did the the same in the TX audio selection.
No problems after that.. made a few qsos on 20m.

I connect up everything. Turn on the computer
and wait for it to fully boot.
(the drivers were previously installed)
Then turn on the ftdx-10.

Note: both the ft-991 and ftdx-10 use windows drivers
for both control and audio TX RX signals.
The ftdx-10 does not have a win7 ver of the drivers.
So that is why it is on the win10 laptop.

2023-05-15 Thread robert evans LAST_NAME via wsjt-devel
Aye Captain Joseph & Crew,

Once upon a time I and others used the ionosphere with
HF for comms with B-52s. The rx site was at Westover afb
and the tx site was in Granby with multi KW ssb going
out on log periodics. There were at least 6 such stations
in the Alpha Bravo net.. now called giant talk.

First time I heard aurora, someone brought their
6m ssb rig to the rx site during aurora and the
in spite of the spectral spread the ssb was readable.

Later i was at the elephant cage in Karamursel until the
Turks bombed Cypress so i ended up in NATO and went to Synop.

All this time we had rtty links with solar observatories.
Who would dream of a SDO..

https://earthsky.org/sun/sun-activity-solar-flare-cme-aurora-updates/

The ionosphere was 'IT' for over the horizon.
Chernobyl was built to power the duga, & Arecibo was built,
cause maybe the changes in the ionosphere would be caused by
incoming or outgoing.

[wsjt-devel] A recollection ..

2023-05-09 Thread robert evans LAST_NAME via wsjt-devel
WW2Y and K2WI decided to compete with W2GD on topband.

W2GD and his crew would setup at the end of Sandy Hook NJ.
They had full wave loops, and Beverages, etc for 160 meters
on a spit of land stuck out on the Atlantic Ocean.

These are seasoned CW contest and DXpedition operators.

They had FT1000s and Drake 4Cs with N9EWO mods.

>From a residential lot in Princeton WW2Y and K2WI started
by installing an inverted L in the trees for 160 meter.
That became four inverted Ls in a trapezoid aimed to the
northeast fed with transmission line transformers to correctly
phase the elements for extra gain.

We put an oscillator in the park behind Princeton shopping
center. Before a contest the termination and matching was
tweaked to null the oscillator in the park while favoring
European stations.

The Beverage is a lossy antenna with the least loss
in the desired direction when correctly terminated and
matched for the soil conditions.

Even with the lossy antenna the AM broadcast band still
interfered with the receivers. So we added traps both
lumped element and transmission line coax. They were
able to protect the receivers, but the noise figure of all that
insertion loss plus antenna loss was now compromising
the sensitivity even for 160 meters reception.

An amplifier using a 2N3866 was designed for low noise
at 1.8MHz and placed just after the Beverage, but because
it was 5 Watt device it could be biased up to handle the
AM broadcast signal without losing linearity.

Its low noise and high gain fed the lossy traps and filters
that protected the receivers while getting the system
noise figure and sensitivity back were it was required.

They also found that they could now insert a trap after
the 2n3866 amp at the transmitter frequency and listen
while they were transmitting a few KHz away.

This search Drake 4C N9EWO receiver was used by
a second operator to tune around the band looking
for stations not yet worked. Then handing the main
transceiver operator the frequency it the station was
calling CQ. Or if the station was actually calling them
switch the audio to the main stations headphones so
he could work him.

I would look at the water fall display bursts being
over the line and estimate the time offsets.

Wait till the seconds were into the next
minute and set the seconds to 30 + or - the
an estimated correction then start the clock
at 30 seconds.

After decoding a few, I'd check the time
offsets in the WSJT display and do it
again if necessary.

If a bit set high was an indicator of a trusted
time by a station, it could be used in SW
to auto-correct or at least set an indication
or alarm.

2023-02-10 Thread robert evans LAST_NAME via wsjt-devel
Mahaba Akadasham,
The emergency communications group Türkiye Radyo Amatörleri Cemiyeti (TRAC) is
coordinating primary communications.

The designated primary disaster communication frequency is 28.540 MHz (USB). In
addition, 3.777 and 7.092 MHz will also be used as needed. Amateur radio
operators have been asked to avoid these frequencies to allow any emergency
traffic.

Re: [wsjt-devel] Hamlib Error

2022-07-22 Thread robert evans LAST_NAME via wsjt-devel
As a diagnostic..

While sending CQ for example..

Reduce the transmit power,
by both audio and transmitter settings and see
if the phenomenon goes away at lower powers.

If with the output minimized the phenomenon
persists then it is probably not RFI related.

If you find a reduced output power that does
not exhibit the phenomenon, then it is probably
RFI related. And, you have a clue as how much
shielding and isolation you might need.

Operating at the reduced power while introducing
changes gives you method of testing improvements.

I used a RasPi4 2.6.0 rc1 and a FTDI to control my 1996 ft1000mp
with a USB audio dongle for field day.
The RadPi4 was headless using No Machine so I could
operate remotely from the TV room with my Android phone
or laptop.

FTDI has less problems especially with some other software
works very well with N1MM.

PROLIFIC does seem to work with wsjt-x and hamlib,
but has had problems with N1MM and others.

[wsjt-devel] N2LO_FT8V2_RU_2018SEP27THU_cabrillo

2018-09-27 Thread robert evans LAST_NAME
Even though the planned contest was from 0200 to 0300, there was FT8V2 RU
activity on 40 meters before and after.

Enclosed is the cabrillo log of FT8V2 QSOs made using the built-in logger.

I also logged on QRZ by pasting search to see the pages and pics there while
operating.

Lots of activity. Often (more than usually) bumped while answering CQs by other
stations.

Thanks for the opportunity.

[wsjt-devel] N2LO (FT8 V2 rtty roundup test 2018SEP27THU)

2018-09-27 Thread robert evans LAST_NAME
There was FT8 V2 Round Up activity on 40 meters before 0200 and after 0300.

I made a few QSOs and logged them before and after the originally planned hour.

Below, though, are just the QSOs for the hour during the 0200 to 0300 period.
