[wsjt-devel] Translations of the WSJT-X User Guide

2016-01-12 Thread Joe Taylor
Hi Anders, Borja, and all,

I suggest that translations should probably start with the WSJT-X User
Guide in the development branch -- that is, the Guide for Version 1.7.0.
As it now stands, this document is not much different from the one for
version 1.6. New sections need to be written for the "fast modes", in
particular, and there will be some additions to the sections on VHF/UHF
capabilities. But these sections are reasonably well isolated from
other parts of the guide. So it's probably safe to start work on the
existing material any time you wish.

Re: [wsjt-devel] Translations of the WSJT-X User Guide

2016-04-24 Thread Anders Rhodin
Hi all!

I now feel finished with translating the existing sections of the V1.7.0
user guide into Swedish.
However I may have to get some proofreading made on it just to be sure it´s
ok. :)

Is there any texts or documentation regarding the new functions that can be
started on for the user guide? Maybe it's to soon for this?

We also have the question about how to do the integration of the translated
material in to the documentation source code on SVN.
At the present only the text in the documentation source files have been
changed/translated and the file structure is exactly like the english
version.
Except for the source files in the user guide folder containing the
translated section files, changes has also been made to the files in the
"common" folder.
Especially the license and links ADOC files.

How are we going to do the integration of the translated files into the
documentation?

Best regards, 73

Probably best to wait for updates to the english language User Guide and
track them as they get committed.

This is already in place. The CMake scripts have been adjusted for
building multiple language versions of the User Guide and the WSJT-X
application has been enhanced to find the correct manual from the
project web server based on the user's locale settings.

This is good as the CMake scripts assume that is the case.

This is more complex, what changes have been made to the common files?

I do not think translating the licence text is advisable, to be GPL v3
compatible the wording must be exactly as per the official GPL v3
licence. I'm not sure if translations of that text are available or
necessary.

You can send a patch to me or simply a zip/tar archive of the relevant
directories and I will commit the initial version, with you credited of
course. Once hat is in place it should be simpler for others to follow
up with new languages.

I suspected that this might be a problem. As mentioned below It concerns
the links.adoc and license.adoc files.
The reason for doing corrections in the links-file is that the
corresponding links in the text in the English user guide uses words in
sentences, ex. "Click here for more information" where the word "here"
contains the link. Since that the user guide is in Swedish the English word
"here" does´nt really fit in.. ;)
I just realized that this might be solved by adding new posts of links but
tagged to fit with a Swedish version. This will leave the English links
texts as they are just adding links to other languages. Is this an
acceptable way to solve it?

I think I´ll restore the original links-file and just add on the required
links with a tag for the Swedish translation. Just to try it locally.

Ok, for the time being It might be better to leave the text as it is
according to the GPL v3 in English.
There might be a Swedish version but as you said, It might not be necessary.

QSL! I´ll do that after we sorted out and agreed how to handle the common
files.
Depending on how to solve the issue it might need some more tweaking in the
files.. :)

Isuspected that this might be a problem. As mentioned below It
concerns the links.adoc and license.adoc files.
The reason for doing corrections in the links-file is that the
corresponding links in the text in the English user guide uses words
in sentences, ex. "Click here for more information" where the word
"here" contains the link. Since that the user guide is in Swedish

languages. Is this an acceptable way to solve it?
That sounds reasonable to me but some of the common stuff was made
common when the documentation was central for more than just WSJT-X, it
may be more appropriate to move some of the common stuff back into the
document.

If the links are only used once and have a non-proper noun link text
then I do not think moving them back to the document itself will be a
problem at all.

Where a "here" link text is actually referring to a external document
written in English then the link text can easily be made the document
title, in English, and a trivial rewording of the reference will make it
more amenable to translations.

I think I´ll restore the original links-file and just add on the
required links with a tag for the Swedish translation. Just to try
it locally.

Ok, for the time being It might be better to leave the text as it is

There might be a Swedish version but as you said, It might not be
necessary.

The details are here:

http://www.gnu.org/licenses/translations.en.html

and there are no "official" translations because of the reasons stated
there. There are a handful of unofficial translations that follow the
strict rules stated. IMHO for an application used in a domain where
English is often the common language having the licence in English only
is not a big issue.

That sounds reasonable to me. Moving the links back to the document is not
that hard and the most of the links are only used once or maybe twice for
some of them. It's OK by me to make theese adjustments but It's important
that we work the same way with all three manuals. :)

I looked at the page regarding translations of the GPL and It do seems best
to leave the license text as it is in English... :)

Hi Anders,

In https://sourceforge.net/p/wsjt/wsjt/6647/ I have made some minor
changes to the links.adoc file and the User Guide that should help
translators without having to duplicate links. This is important since
links need updating occasionally and only doing it in one file in one
place is optimal.

Here is a sample of the User Guide after those changes:
