[X2Go-User] x2go for wayland

2024-04-26 Thread Neal Becker
I'm curious if there will be something like x2go for wayland. I've been
playing with waypipe. It does appear to at least work for allowing a remote
application running on wayland to be used on my local machine. Not sure if
it performs as well on low-bandwidth connections as x2go using NX, but at
least seems usable in some limited testing.

What's missing is persistent sessions and remote desktop. While waypipe
allows running a remote app, it doesn't AFAIK allow a remote desktop, nor
persistence.

A bit of googling found nothing useful. Anyone know if there is work in
this area?

Thanks,
Neal

I'm trying x2goclient from fedora 40 rc2 client to fedora 39 server.
Connection fails at startup "the remote proxy closed the connection during
negotiation" There should not be any authentication problem as I can ssh
without password.
The client then segfaults.

So far good results! The previous tests failed because when the network
connection was lost the session was lost, which made it unusable for my use
case. Now this problem seems fixed. When network connection is lost, the
client crashes, which is annoying, but not does not make it unusable. The
session is preserved and restarting the client reconnects fine.

[X2Go-User] x2gokdrive doesn't like connection interruption

2023-07-22 Thread Neal Becker
client and server both fedora f38.
x2gokdriveclient-0.0.0.1-1.fc38.x86_64

I find that when connection gets interrupted 3 bad things can happen:

1. client uses 100% cpu

2. Trying to reconnect, screen starts to open and immediately closes. Then
on next attempt a new session starts, old session is lost.

3. With client connected, closing laptop lid should initiate sleep. Instead
client runs 100% cpu and machine doesn't sleep.

[X2Go-User] wayland client keyboard mapping problems

2023-05-31 Thread Neal Becker
I've been using x2go for a long time now, with X11 on server and client. I
use remapping of caps->ctrl (old emacs guy). After struggling with
problems using X11 on client and server side, this seems to have been
resolved for the last couple of years and life was good.

Now I'm trying wayland on the client side. So far things work, except the
keyboard mapping problem is back. Every time I reconnect when I hit caps
in emacs (running on server) it is not mapped to ctrl. Using xfce on
server (kde on client) I seem to each time need to open keyboard settings
(xfce) and fiddle with it toggling the cryptically-named Alt+ctrl keyboard
variant setting and then my mapping works again.

Any suggestions? It would be great if it just worked, like it did on X11.
But if I could just run a cli command to fix it on the server each time I
connect I could also live with that.

Thanks,
Neal

monitor with say 3840x2160. Now I need to resize everything. Going the

[X2Go-User] freezing after update to fedora 37

2022-11-28 Thread Neal Becker
Been using x2go for many fedora releases. After updating both client and
server to fedora f37, I have a new problem. I've tried multiple desktops,
including xfce and lxde, and have the same symptoms.
After starting a session, it initially works fine. When I come back later
to try to use it, it is frozen. So I have not disconnected from the
session and reconnected. On the client side the screen was locked and then
unlocked when I returned. The client did not suspend - it is running on
A/C power.

The session is frozen and completely unresponsive to input.
Disconnect/reconnect it's still frozen. Only terminate/new session will
unfreeze it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

If you just want to use zoom then use their web app instead of the native
zoom app. I always do this with zoom, teams, etc. because the options for
sharing are better in chrome than the native apps.

[X2Go-User] Mounting of home dir is failing

2022-05-29 Thread Neal Becker
Just noticed that mounting of my home dir is failing. In journal I see:

I don't know when this started failing as I don't use it much. Perhaps
related to upgrade of client to fedora 36?

ssh login without password is working fine.

Any ideas?

[X2Go-User] session freezing

2022-01-26 Thread Neal Becker
Client and server are both Fedora 35.

xfce session.

This setup has worked for years. An SSD failed on the server, and after
re-installing F35 on it, now x2go session keeps freezing. Seems to happen
at least when it is left running unattended. The x2go screen is shown, but
unable to get focus into any window, click on any icon. Suspend/unsuspend
does not fix it. Only terminate and restart fixes it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Neal

I just tried xfce as a remote desktop. Client and server both fedora f35.

I found it unusable. After desktop starts, I tried clicking icons to open
a terminal, and the file manager. Nothing appears. Tried close x2go and
reopen. Now the missing terminal and file windows appear.

Try to drag the windows and they leave a trail of rectangles. Seems
windows are not being repainted.

Any suggestions?

I believe I often see some message (something like something didn't
disconnect cleanly) associated with this problem.

This has been happening for a long time now on Fedora. When a session is
closed, there is perhaps 10% probability that it goes into this state.

I killed all clipboard managers on client and server. After unsuspending
my session, a first test of bi-directional clipboard is working. Local
copy/paste on client is also working. I will continue testing.

[X2Go-User] copy/paste issues

2020-08-11 Thread Neal Becker
I (still) have a strange problem with copy/paste on my setup. When x2go
client is active, copy/paste stops working *locally *(nevermind if it works
between local and remote).

Client is using kde, server is mate.

Any ideas?

I've noticed that if x2goclient is running that the UI for lyx running
locally (NOT remotely) is very sluggish. Trying to operate menus, scroll
windows, etc. are very sluggish. Kill x2goclient and the problem stops.

lyx is a QT app.

I updated nx-libs on client (F32) and server (F31). I'm running copyq on
both. It seems bi-directional copy/paste are
working fine (at least ATM, in the past it's been flaky so we'll see).

Thanks!

[X2Go-User] OT: key modifiers

2020-06-19 Thread Neal Becker
I have a nasty problem not related to x2go. My desktop is Fedora 32/KDE
(pretty sure doesn't matter if wayland or x11).
Sometimes I need to edit a MS office document. I've been using vmware
horizon to connect to my work, and fire up powerpoint. After using this,
(and after closing down horizon), I find all my modifier keys are gone,
ALT, CTRL no longer do anything. I don't know how to recover without
logoff/logon. As you can imagine, this is not really acceptable. Anyone
know how to fix this?

Thanks,
Neal

Thanks for the tip, but there's no 3.5.99.24 there. Should I file a bug
report asking Orion to update the Fedora package?
Is it just nx-libs that needs an update?

 http://packages.x2go.org/fedora/30/main/x86_64/rpms/nx-libs/ has what

kde has some clipboard manager, doesn't seem to run as a separate process
though (don't see it in ps).

Actually it's worse (and weirder) than I thought. If x2go client is
running, cut/paste doesn't work anywhere on my client side, not only within
x2go client. I just tried
cut/paste between tabs in chrome on my client (not within x2go) and nothing
happens. I then shutdown the x2go session on the client, and tried the
experiment again,
and now I can cut/paste between tabs on chrome.

[X2Go-User] keyboard config on wayland

2020-06-18 Thread Neal Becker
Both client and server are Fedora (31 and 32).

I'm running a kde/wayland client, with capslock mapped to ctrl.
When I connect to the server (running mate) everything works fine, except I
don't have capslock mapped to ctrl.
Every time I connect (not every time the session starts) I have to run
setxkbmap -option caps:ctrl_modifier

Oh actually one thing doesn't work. Cut/paste is totally nonfunctional.

2020-04-27 Thread Neal Becker
OK, tried with a new user profile. Tried a number of times, deleting and
re-creating the user between attempts.
There doesn't seem to be any way to get this working on wayland.
Went back to X11 on the client and it's working fine.

Re: [X2Go-User] x2go over wayland now working?

2020-04-27 Thread Neal Becker
Spoke too soon. This is driving me nuts. There seems to be no way to get
my remapping of caps lock as ctrl to work (although it worked once!).

I've tried a bunch of remote desktops: mate, xfce, lxqt. I've tried setting
on x2go client I/O to configure keyboard, don't configure keyboard, auto-
detect. I've tried in the x2go session various ways to configure the
keyboard. The best I can manage is that caps lock does nothing (the worst I
can get is caps lock is stuck on and can't be turned off).

I'm baffled. I'm not an X expert, but if I run xev within the x2go session
and hit capslock I see something about a keysym "capslock". So the concept
of capslock is being propagated to the remote session. But I can't seem to
remap it to do anything (like ctrl as I want) either through any gui
keyboard config, or using setxkbmap.

The current setxkbmap state is (as told by the remote session)
setxkbmap -query
rules: evdev
model: pc105
layout: us
options:ctrl:nocaps,caps:ctrl_modifier

2020-04-26 Thread Neal Becker
One other issue:
I've had problems with my keyboard layout for a long time under X11. I run
with Capslock remapped to Ctrl. Now running on wayland, I set x2go client
to "do not configure keyboard". When I reconnect to my session (running
mate), in settings it has layout
(system/preferences/hardware/keyboard/layout/options) set 'ctrl position:
caps lock as ctrl'. I have to turn this off. Now caps lock is working as
ctrl as I want. But every time I reconnect I have to go through this
setting, otherwise caps lock is not acting as ctrl, it's acting as caps
lock.

Summary:
1. I did need to terminate/restart. Now I see sleep=0 in options
2. I could see processes are sleeping by ssh into machine: when x2go was
active I had a bunch
of processes running 100%, then when suspended they are not active.
3. Remaining mystery is why I have other older installations that never did
this, but this new machine sleeps by default.
The older installs, also Fedora, have all been kept up-to-date.

[X2Go-User] processes sleep on suspend

2020-02-11 Thread Neal Becker
I've used x2go on linux (Fedora) for years and never experienced this
before. I just setup a new workstation.
When I suspend a session, the running processes started by it seem to
sleep. A bit of googling suggested I
need to edit /etc/x2go/x2goagent.options setting:
X2GO_NXOPTIONS="sleep=0"

I hope this helps: it hasn't yet. Will this only take effect after I
terminate the current session and start a new one?

[X2Go-User] keymapping changes everytime x2goserver restarts

2019-07-02 Thread Neal Becker
I reported some time ago that on my setup:
fedora 30 client
fedora 30 server

Everytime the server restarts and I establish a new session, I need to
toggle the setting of 'configure keyboard'. I have on the client remapped
capsLock -> Ctrl. Unless I toggle the setting from the setting I used the
previous time the mapping is not working.

So if I'm using
autoconfigure keyboard

the next time the server reboots and I start a new session (I only start a
new session on reboot), I'll need to set

don't configure keyboard

Any ideas?

Sorry if you see this twice, gmane.org has not been working this morning.

client is fedora 30 kde/wayland, running Xwayland.
server is also fedora 30, session is mate.

client crashes with segfault in QT.

I'm curious as to what other people are seeing with this these days.
 With Fedora 28 plasma-desktop-5.13.4-1.fc28.x86_64 I'm still seeing
plasma shell and other apps crash trying to initialize GLX.

Just tried on fedora 28. I get a black screen with messages about krunner

[X2Go-User] keyboard layout driving me insane

2018-08-27 Thread Neal Becker
On client side, I have layout set to map caps lock to ctrl. I need this
also when using x2go! But it seems hard to achieve. In x2go, I try both
'autodetect keyboard' and 'don't configure keyboard'. I try mate, xfce,
lxde. On the server side I would like to try also configure keyboard
layout, but I don't find any good way to do it on those window managers.
Unfortunately, neither KDE nor GNOME will work (both client and server are
fedora 28).

Sometimes I seem to hit a combination that works, but then when if the
connection is terminated and I try again, it's once again not preserving my
key remapping. This is driving me nuts! Any recommendations?

Yes, it is QT5 that causes the problem. If I switch matplotlib to Qt4agg

Yes, when I first ran into this bug I built an emacs version with gtk2
instead of gtk3 which provided a workaround, and then setup emacs-x2go to
help out others.

But since fedora now supplies emacs-lucid I just use that instead, and won't
be updating emacs-x2go.

I am running x2go on F24 x2goclient-4.0.5.1-1.fc24.x86_64

One think I am having trouble with is that emacs crashes when run through
x2go.

[X2Go-User] desktop freezes when connection lost

2015-06-08 Thread Neal Becker
Love x2go, but one significant annoyance.

If I sleep my client without first shutting down x2go, then when it wakes,
desktop is unresponsive until x2go timesout, and asks whether to terminate.

I don't know what x2go is doing that freezes desktop, but I don't think this
should happen.

I'm using kde on client side. I saw this behavior for some time, both on
kde4 (fedora f22) and now on kf5 (fedora 23).

[X2Go-User] x2go not working with fedora f22 kde?

2015-05-28 Thread Neal Becker
I just updated server to f22 (actually, clean install of OS). When I try to
start x2go client (from fedora f21), I get don't seem to get any kde
desktop. If kde was configured to restore session, I just get the window
that I had used previously (konsole), but no panel - no action on right
click on desktop - no way to start anything or do anything.

I tried mv'ing ~/.x2go on the server, but that didn't help. Tried mv'ing
~/.kde on the server - still no help.

Nothing logged under ~/.x2go, where are the logs?

I'm using kde (client and server)

I'm guessing this is due to x2go, since there are no other logins on the server.

Just to clarify, my question is, is group fuse used by x2goprint on fedora
20, which does not seem to otherwise use a fuse group? If so, I could just
try making one - but then if that's the case x2goprint rpm should have done
this - or else it should require the package that does.

Re: [X2Go-User] x2go printer howto

2014-05-15 Thread Neal Becker
I'm not sure fedora uses a fuse group. I have several fuse packages
installed but no fuse group. There is no package called fuse-utils on
fedora.
I see there is a group x2goprint on the server - I'm wondering if perhaps
this group is used instead?

There is no fuse group on the server.
There is not on the client either, although the client does use fuse.

Are you sure there is a fuse group on fedora 20?

[X2Go-User] x2go printer howto

2014-05-14 Thread Neal Becker
client and server are both fedora 20.

I install cups-x2go on server (and x2goserver-printing).

I setup a cups-x2go printer on server on kde environment.

On the client I resumed session, with printing enabled (I did not try starting
a
new session).

On server, I can open kde printer settings and try printing a test page. It
seems successful.

Nothing is printed.

How to debug?

There are things that don't work *without* dbus.
I'm afraid I can't recall ATM, but I recall that at least one program I felt
pretty essential to my usage of x2go wouldn't run, and I gave up on the idea -
since I had no clue how to start dbus, and didn't get any ideas from the groups
I posted questions to.

Re: [X2Go-User] X2go on docker :)

2014-05-07 Thread Neal Becker
I am excited to have dockerx2go on fedora 20 x86_64. I made one myself but
it was only partly functional.
It did not run dbus so many things wouldn't work that you'd expect on a
desktop.
