2008-08-22 Thread Jim Morgan
Due to a tragic and terribly embarrasing act last night I ended up totally
messing up the /etc/udev/rules.d/20-names.rules file. In a fit of panic, rage,
and/or desperation (I'll let you decide which) I went to square one and
reloaded Fluxbuntu. Aside from an Ubuntu disc which won't work on this computer
I don't have any other distro.

So I have gone back and changed the permissions in
/etc/udev/rules.d/40-permissions.rules so that the permissions problem will be
solved. I will try again, with great caution and fear this time, to see if
adding the /dev/ttyS0 to the /etc/udev/rules.d20-names file will get Xastir to
talking to the Kenwood through the serial port.

I also found this on the ubuntu forums.

Adding the username that needs to access the serial port to the group,
"dialout".

sudo adduser username dialout

This Fluxbuntu thing got my curiosity going, so I created a virtual
machine with it. A check of the properties of ttyS0 shows indeed that
the owner, group is root, dialout.

By the way, Fluxbuntu is based on Ubuntu 7.10 - evidently no 8.04 version yet.

I found a line that said "KERNEL==ttyLTM..." so I added the line that Lee
suggested right underneath that one. It did make the permissions crwxrwxrwx
after the reboot. The ttyS0 appears to be in the "dialout" group and my
username is in the dialout group.

Still no communication between the computer and the radio.

I have a file for Names in the /etc/udev/rules.d directory and I don't see the

If the file is in /etc/udev/rules.d and contains the line with
KERNEL=="tty[A-Z]*", that's the one you want.

The various files in that directory do the same thing. The files are

sudo adduser j0n dialout

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo adduser j0n dialout
[sudo] password for j0n:
The user `j0n' is already a member of `dialout'.

Fyi, this is what I found after some googling. The context of the
forum discussion was that a person was having a similar problem
connecting his weather station to his serial port in openSUSE. It
sounds right in sync with what Curt said about udev enabled linux
versions.

* NOTE: If you are running OpenSUSE, or any other Linux distro which
utilizes "udev" (udev is included in almost every 2.6 kernel based
Linux distribution), then in order to permanently change permissions
of your ttyS0 port (or any ttyS* port), you must edit the
"/etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev-default.rules" file. Here are the changes
you must make in order for the permissions to stick after rebooting
your computer (you must be root to make the changes):

* Open the "/etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev-default.rules" file in your
favorite text editor (as root). Find the line in the file that begins
with KERNEL=="tty[A-Z]". That's the line you will need to edit. Notice
the default settings will look something like this:

* KERNEL=="tty[A-Z]*", NAME="%k", GROUP="uucp"

* Add [, MODE="777"] to the end of the above line in your
50-udev-default.rules file (without the brackets but don't forget to
add the preceding coma). It should look something like this:

* KERNEL=="tty[A-Z]*", NAME="%k", GROUP="uucp", MODE="777"

* After changing this file and saving, reboot your computer. The
ttyS* ports will grant rwx permission to any user.

* Important: If you have a udev enabled Linux distribution and you
do not make the above noted changes to your 50-udev-default.rules
file, then every time you reboot your computer, the permissions on the
ttyS* ports will revert back to root only access. This is because udev
dynamically updates the /dev directory upon booting. All permissions
granted during your previous session will be lost and Weather Display
will not function properly. This solution is known to work properly
with OpenSUSE 10.2.

==

Fyi, I had the same problem with permissions on my serial port on a
laptop running openSUSE 10.3. I wasn't using Xastir on that unit,
though, so I got around the problem by just running GTKterm and
minicom as root whenever I needed to talk to the serial port. I
wouldn't want to run Xastir as root, though, so hopefully the above
tweak will do the trick.

I thought that we had solved the permissions issues but read on later in this
email.

I have had at times the port supposedly tied up by other programs. I say
supposedly because I had turned nothing on but Xastir and/or the GTKTerm but
the system said port busy in spite of the fact that I only had one port
utilizing program on.

One time in a fit of frustration I tried connecting too often and Xastir itself
put a lock on the port but someone helped me unlock it.

Now maybe you found something here, Curt, because when I change the permissions
for /dev/ttyS0 the computer does not save them. Upon a reboot they return to a
default of rw-rw.

I think that the Fluxbuntu folks released this distro less than one year ago so
maybe what you said above applies to my issue. Do you (or anyone else) have any

sets their permissions each time you boot. If you're manually
changing permissions in /dev and they keep getting reset, this may
be your issue.

I only figured out enough to change the permissions on my USB
joystick so that each time the device is created I can use it. I
had to go into /etc/udev/rules.d/ and change a file in there.

Interesting. Yea, we create symlinks to the proper language
files for language.sys and help.dat.

Acutually this is a problem someone else had using Xastir with
Knoppix. I do not understand fully what problem they had so any
explanation I might provide would not suffice.

Roger. I'll have to look into why we create symlinks each time we
run (we shouldn't do that), plus what the problem is with Knoppix
and some compressed filesystem with redirects... I hadn't heard of
that problem before.

No sir. I use the DB9 serial port.

Also, at sometime in the last couple of weeks someone asked if I used a serial
mouse. I do not and right now I do not own a mouse with a wheel.

No. The festival thing is just a warning and has nothing to do with
the language file. You don't need to run Festival. If you want to
get rid of this warning once and for all, get rid of the Festival
packages and re-run configure/make/make install, or else keep the
packages and run "./configure --without-festival". The warning is
harmless though as-is. If you _want_ to run Festival, that's fine
too but it's not necessary.

Besides, it seems to look for a configuration file in
~/.xastir/config/language.sys - and here comes the catch: xastir
seems to replace this file at every run with a symlink (and due to
klik's relocate-patch, this fails). So you have to do manually:

Code:
# unpack cmg
/sbin/fsck.cramfs -x ~/Desktop/xastir ~/Desktop/xastir*.cmg

# create directory
mkdir -p ~/.xastir/config/share/xastir/config

# copy language files
cp ~/Desktop/xastir/usr/share/xastir/config/language-*
~/.xastir/config/share/xastir/config

# delete unpacked AppDir
rm -rf ~/Desktop/xastir/

Interesting. Yea, we create symlinks to the proper language files
for language.sys and help.dat. This is so one can switch languages
for the menus and help text from English to one of the other
supported languages. I was unaware of this causing problems, but it
looks like you're using a compressed filesystem and the symlinks are
getting created pointing to the wrong place? This might be
something we could fix in the code if it were explained well enough
to us.

To refresh our minds a bit- I am trying to run Xastir on a Fluxbuntu computer
with a Celeron processor and 64MB. The issue is that while Xastir (sometimes)
says the interface thru the serial port is up the computer will not talk to the
radio.

I bumped into this while trying to figure something out in Knoppix. We know
that festival is not required to run Xastir... but what is the rest of this and
is it my problem?

Re: [Xastir] Fluxbuntu-D700-Xastir-GTKTerm

2008-08-11 Thread Dave H
Hi Gerry
I don't know Fluxbuntu - but don't think its to far a variation of Ubuntu
for basic communications like ttyS0 and so on.. I would suggest Jim does *ps
-aux | grep ttyS* into a terminal that's stretched full-width of the screen
to grab as much detail as possible (naturally there is others ways but keep
it simple for now... )

Lets see what the whole of this brings please.

ps -aux | grep ttyS

I can't imagine either -the next stage might be user permissions and whether
sudo is or isnt being used to run Xastir (frankly I forgot whether mine is
at this point..!) however its past 1am here and I'm due back in work
tomorrow morning after holidays. So I have to go - I'll take a look later on
at work... ;)

Jim can you get on anything like MSN or Yahoo or IRC to chat?

I'd not say I'm anything of an expert with Ubuntu but this should provide a
little evidence to move forward.

Have you got any results for this? - it maybe somethings sitting on it and
you can kill that process - at least to prove it works, then move onto
sorting out the problem with whatever is sitting on tyS0

I don't want to confuse things - but would you try this to show if anything
is sitting on ttyS0 (it might be something you ran earlier.

sudo ps -aux | grep ttyS0

there should be a list - perhaps copy and paste that into a message
(ignore the 'warning' about'bad ps syntax')

Ubuntu doesn't use /etc/inittab, and the file doesn't exist on that system.
Instead, ubuntu has files in /etc/event.d that start up getty on various
ports.

If there's a file /etc/event.d/ttyS0 then Alex's hypothesis might be correct.
On my system there are only files for each of the virtual consoles, tty1-tty6.

I bet there's a serial getty sitting on the port right now for a serial
console. Look inside a file called /etc/inittab for the serial port. You can
do it this way:

grep ttyS0 /etc/inittab

If it comes back with a line that doesn't have a # in front, that's probably
part of the problem.
