Due to a tragic and terribly embarrasing act last night I ended up totally messing up the /etc/udev/rules.d/20-names.rules file. In a fit of panic, rage, and/or desperation (I'll let you decide which) I went to square one and reloaded Fluxbuntu. Aside from an Ubuntu disc which won't work on this computer I don't have any other distro. So I have gone back and changed the permissions in /etc/udev/rules.d/40-permissions.rules so that the permissions problem will be solved. I also found this on the ubuntu forums. Adding the username that needs to access the serial port to the group, "dialout". sudo adduser username dialout This Fluxbuntu thing got my curiosity going, so I created a virtual machine with it. A check of the properties of ttyS0 shows indeed that the owner, group is root, dialout. By the way, Fluxbuntu is based on Ubuntu 7.10 - evidently no 8.04 version yet. I found a line that said "KERNEL==ttyLTM..." so I added the line that Lee suggested right underneath that one. It did make the permissions crwxrwxrwx after the reboot. The ttyS0 appears to be in the "dialout" group and my username is in the dialout group. Still no communication between the computer and the radio. You don't need to run Festival. If you want to get rid of this warning once and for all, get rid of the Festival packages and re-run configure/make/make install, or else keep the packages and run "./configure --without-festival". The warning is harmless though as-is. If you _want_ to run Festival, that's fine too but it's not necessary. To refresh our minds a bit- I am trying to run Xastir on a Fluxbuntu computer with a Celeron processor and 64MB. The issue is that while Xastir (sometimes) says the interface thru the serial port is up the computer will not talk to the radio. I bumped into this while trying to figure something out in Knoppix. We know that festival is not required to run Xastir... but what is the rest of this and is it my problem? ---quoted text--- Posted: Sun Feb 05, 2006 2:20 pm Code: festival_client: connect to server failed SayText: Couldn't open socket to Festival Could not read Language file: /home/linux/.xastir/config/language.sys! Error in language file! Exiting... Looks to me as if it requres a running festival server. This is easy: get it with klik://festival and then then launch festival as a server with Code: ~/.zAppRun ~/Desktop/festival*.cmg festival --server Besides, it seems to look for a configuration file in ~/.xastir/config/language.sys - and here comes the catch: xastir seems to replace this file at every run with a symlink (and due to klik's relocate-patch, this fails). So you have to do manually: Code: # unpack cmg /sbin/fsck.cramfs -x ~/Desktop/xastir ~/Desktop/xastir*.cmg # create directory mkdir -p ~/.xastir/config/share/xastir/config # copy language files cp ~/Desktop/xastir/usr/share/xastir/config/language-* ~/.xastir/config/share/xastir/config # delete unpacked AppDir rm -rf ~/Desktop/xastir/ Now it runs. Re: [Xastir] Fluxbuntu-D700-Xastir-GTKTerm
Hi Gerry I don't know Fluxbuntu - but don't think its to far a variation of Ubuntu for basic communications like ttyS0 and so on.. I would suggest Jim does *ps -aux | grep ttyS* into a terminal that's stretched full-width of the screen to grab as much detail as possible (naturally there is others ways but keep it simple for now... ) Lets see what the whole of this brings please. ps -aux | grep ttyS I can't imagine either -the next stage might be user permissions and whether sudo is or isnt being used to run Xastir (frankly I forgot whether mine is at this point..!) however its past 1am here and I'm due back in work tomorrow morning after holidays. So I have to go - I'll take a look later on at work... ;) Jim can you get on anything like MSN or Yahoo or IRC to chat? I'd not say I'm anything of an expert with Ubuntu but this should provide a little evidence to move forward. RE: [Xastir] Fluxbuntu-D700-Xastir-GTKTerm
It occurs to me that this could be an error message that's falsely reporting inability to find ttyS0, when in fact, it's reporting that the user that's trying to run gtkterm isn't a member of the group that owns ttyS0. So that user should be added to the group, and will need to log out and back in again. I did do it and it gave me a long string of numbers that started with 'jim' (my username). I guess the 4 digit number next to my name was the process that was running? If it is then I just "sudo kill ???" ? But if it is "jim" will that log me off? Ubuntu doesn't use /etc/inittab, and the file doesn't exist on that system. Instead, ubuntu has files in /etc/event.d that start up getty on various ports. If there's a file /etc/event.d/ttyS0 then Alex's hypothesis might be correct.
