Well, when this error occurs, these are usually the only lines present
in XFree86.0.log.

When the X server crashes once before it installed his signal
handlers, it leaves the /tmp/.X0-lock and the /tmp/.X11-unix/X0 socket
around, and all subsequent tries give the above error.

So, buddy, you need to remove /tmp/.X0-lock and
/tmp/.X11-unix/* and try again. Then send the contents of
/var/log/XFree86.0.log that contains the real information about the
crashing server.

I wonder if these are machines which have been upgraded to RH 8.0 ?
In previous versions Red Hat supplied both XFree86 v3 and XFree86 v4,
with the former using /etc/X11/XFree86 and the later using
/etc/X11/XFree86-v4.
In RH 8.0 XFree86 v4 uses /etc/X11/XFree86, which might well refer
to XF86_S3 if the config hasn't been rebuilt (and it might well not be).

There is no Rotate support in XFree86 yet - only in TinyX I believe.
Some drivers support at Rotate config file option, but that mode
requires that you disable RandR support.

Re: [XFree86] Speedo and the Radeon 7000

2003-03-04 Thread Jesse Hutton
I don't make the Speedo fonts available to X and I have no problems.

It sounds like you're having trouble loading the Speedo module for some
reason (I have no idea why a hardware upgrade would cause that, except
for the fact that you may be using a new driver), which is used for
serving up Speedo fonts to the X server. Try commenting it out in the
"Module" section of your XF86Config-4 file if you don't mind not using
these fonts, and you may as well comment out the speedo fontpath if you
do that. Otherwise, you'll have to figure out why this modules isn't
loading properly.

[XFree86] Speedo and the Radeon 7000

2003-03-04 Thread Bill Kristjanson
I have installed a Radeon 7000 PCI in my Phoebe-3 (RH 8.0.94) system.
After the upgrade of the card X refused to start. My system would lock
and required the three-finger-salute. Through experimentation I have
established that the problem occurs when X tries to load Speedo. I
understand that speedo is a font backend.

My questions are:

Is speedo the "new" method of rendering fonts or the "outgoing" method?

Does anyone know of a work-around to get it running?

Is having no speedo fonts even something I should worry about?

[XFree86] x stopped event - xlib bug?

2003-03-04 Thread bitlov
I have a daemon programmed with xlib that use X to display informations in a
"override redirect" windows when X is running. But it crashes when X is
stopped (or restarted of course, i.e. in case of log out) and don't receive
any event from X. In fact, it crashes when sending request to a dead X
server because it hasn't been notified of its dead. Is there a bug in xlib?
If not, how can I prevent the daemon crash?
Thanks

The Radeon Mobility 9000 did not even exist when Red Hat Linux
7.3 was released. The hardware came out just before, or just
after Red Hat Linux 8.0 was released. ATI provided patches to
the XFree86 project to add support for this hardware, which
eventually went into CVS and is first supported now in XFree86
4.3.0 which was just released last week.

XFree86 4.3.0, which will be part of the next Red Hat Linux
release, and is currently part of Red Hat Linux (phoebe) beta
release, is required for support for this video hardware.

Hope this helps.

I too seem to recall seeing this before on the list Lionel and it
baffled me then as it does now. I suspect that the OP is either not
using Red Hat 8.0 or else that they've added or deleted XFree86
components from the out-of-the-box install.

If I do a search for documentation on this on my Red Hat 8.0
installation I find the following:
[ofeeley]$ less /usr/share/doc/redhat-release-8.0/RELEASE-NOTES-i386

"Legacy XFree86 3.3.6 video hardware support has now been removed from
the distribution and is no longer supported. XFree86 4.2.0 is now the
only X server shipped with Red Hat Linux."

It then goes on to say that if there is no XFree86 4.x driver available
_or_ it doesn't work properly it tries to use VESA. Failing that it
tries to use VGA.

So, I have no idea how the OP got this error message.

(p.s. I changed your message to be included as a "bottom-post-reply" and
shortened the line-wrap length Lionel because I find it easier to see
that way. Apologies if that seems high-handed).

[XFree86] GeForce2 Go support in nv driver

"Fortunately, Mark Vojkovich of the XFree86 core team committed

Have you tried the most recent version of the x rpms from apt-get, together
with the most recent kernel? Just wondered before I gave it a go.

[XFree86] error log report

2003-03-04 Thread Evan Brown
Hi

I'm a relative Linux newbie and was trying to get a RedHat 7.2 install
going.I just bought a new system that is going to be a small webserver
and windows file server, the motherboard for the system is a Gigabyte K7
Trition GA-7VKMLS with on board sound/video/lan. I can't seem to startX
and I've been trying to fix it for 2 days.I've looked at the Gigabyte
Site and they have a bunch of windows drivers but no Linux so then I
searched google and found
http://www.probo.com/timr/savage40.html#download , downloaded a driver
for the onboard graphics but it still doesn't accept the myriad of
settings I've been trying.

The output from X -configure said to send this report to you so here it
is, if you have any suggestions/help that would be greatly appreciated,
but I'm not holding my breath. Gonna go look in the newsgroups now.

"Clone" is neither an X-server option nor an NVIDIA driver option.
Two separate cards displaying the same thing is a Xinerama configuration
issue. It's merely a matter of having both screens point to the same
area, eg. from the ServerLayout section:

Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
Screen 1 "Screen1" 0 0

Note though that in Xinerama the cursor will only appear on one
head. That is due to a Xinerama implementation issue.

You need to add the font-path entries to XF86Config. What distribution are

Jesse, I'm after the same problem for about two weeks now

in the same way.

I'm thru the truetype hazzle as you are - and regret that I've tried.
(xfstt could stop Mozilla from responding)

What I would like to know - now - is,
where does Mozilla 1.2.1 (and some other applications on
debian/unstable with xfree86 4.2.1-6 and gnome 2.2)
think it should get it's basic font from (not the html fonts),
e.g. to display the menu bar or the email address.
You are not able to configure basic fonts in Mozilla - because Mozilla
is a window on X (or sawfish? or gnome?). Agree.
But I changed fonts at any place I could think of - no change to
Mozilla, (gnome control center is the least place I would recommend)
I tried several things.
Currently I'm investigating something called "fontconfig" - but not sure
that I'm looking at the right place.

As a newbie it's a hazzle. No one likes to look at an ugly font - even
if your are a linux evangelist.
But it' seems to be very hard to give a winning guideline for X (et.al.)

I love to work in gterm - because I learned where to change the font.

How can this be? XF86_S3 is one of the separate servers that existed
before XFree86-4.x.x which is what shipped with Red Hat 8.0, so I don't
see how that can be your server.

Try reconfiguring with "redhat-config-xfree86". Read the RELEASE-NOTES
and all the relevant Red Hat supplied documentation.

[XFree86] Radeon 7200 display glitches in XFree86 4.1.0 and 4.3.0

2003-03-04 Thread Steve Freeland
As per the subject line, I'm getting some screen garbage. The
display is usable but not perfect. The glitches look like this:

http://www.openface.ca/~nephtes/scratch/radeon-glitch-2.png

It's not always that bad, I deliberately exacerbated the
problem to get that shot by dragging the window around. There seem to
be some critical "bad" areas on the screen which are always the wrong
colour, and the resulting "stains" follow a window around when it's
dragged, creating the effect shown in the screenshot. I originally
noticed this in 4.1.0 but it's still happening in 4.3.0. I was really
surprised that it's showing up in screen shots.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

That's Red Hat's second _experimental_beta-test_ of the upcoming 8.1.
Since that there's been another pre-release of 8.0.94. Should you be
running that if you don't know how to read an XFree86 log?

The driver needs the adapter's BIOS so that its initialisation entry point
can be emulated to initialise the adapter. From a power-up state, all ATI
adapters need to be initialised in very adapter-specific ways. To
duplicate this code in the driver is unrealistic and impossible to
maintain.

Your motherboard's system BIOS contains the video BIOS for the onboard
adapter. By the time the system BIOS loads the OS, the onboard video BIOS
remains accessible by the CPU if, and only if, the onboard video is the
primary.

Eventually, we will do what Windows can be made to do: make a copy of the
onboard video BIOS while it's the primary and use the copy otherwise.
There are a number of issues that need ironing out before that happens.
So, for now, I repeat: you are out of luck.

Marc.

Does the trident driver support this chip?

[XFree86] support for Vietnamese: XIM?

2003-03-04 Thread David Monniaux
Hi,

The current XFree86 release (4.3.0) offers support for the input of
Vietnamese characters in UTF-8 locales using the Compose mechanism:

Compose ' or dead_acute => acute accent (ascending tone)
Compose ` or dead_grave => grave accent (descending tone)
Compose ^ or dead_circumflex => circumflex accent
Compose ! or dead_dotbelow => dot below
Compose ? or dead_hook => hook above
Compose + or dead_horn => horn

Vietnamese speakers pointed out to me that this is unwieldy due to the
massive usage of accents in Vietnamese and to the common usage of input
methods (for MS Windows) mapping

oo => o with circumflex
aa => a with circumflex
es => a with acute accent
etc...

Do some similar input methods exist for Unix? Is somebody working on this?

The Compose mechanism looks ok to input short sentences or proper
citations of Vietnamese names, but not for the input of a large body of
text, where such an input method would be needed.

[XFree86] Widescreen support with Intel 845G driver

2003-03-04 Thread Andy Pont

I have an Intel 845G
motherboard running SuSE 8.1 and have upgraded XFree86 4.3.0RC1 and am trying to
get widescreen support for running with plasma screens.

I modified my
XF86Config to have the correct resolution entry in the "Modes" entries and added
a "Modeline" statement with some appropriate values but I don't appear to be
able to switch to the correct mode.

The following is a
snippet from the XFree86.0.log file if it helps.

(II) I810(0): Not
using mode "1024x512" (no mode of this name)(II) I810(0): Not using built-in
mode "1920x1440" (width too large for virtual size)(II) I810(0): Not using
built-in mode "1600x1200" (width too large for virtual size)(II) I810(0):
Not using built-in mode "1280x1024" (width too large for virtual size)(II)
I810(0): Not using built-in mode "1024x768" (width too large for virtual
size)(II) I810(0): Not using built-in mode "800x600" (width too large for
virtual size)(II) I810(0): Not using built-in mode "640x480" (width too
large for virtual size)

Can what I want to
do be achieved or is the driver not capable of running in anything other than
4x3 aspect ratio modes?

Andy.

Your log file indicates that Xfree is configured to use the Open Source NV

use the binary drivers provided by NVIDIA. You need to choose one or the

[XFree86] key not working after installing xfree 4.3.0

2003-03-04 Thread Malte Schünemann
I built and installed XFree86 4.3.0 on an IBM Thinkpad T21 with German keyboard
running Linux kernel 2.4.19 SuSE 7.3. My old XFree release was 4.2.1. After the
install I could not use the key for chars '<>|' (smaller, larger, pipe).
After I re-installed the old /etc/X11/xkb files this problem vanished.

I do not know of any possible problems due to this approach. Also, where and how would
I have to change the original 4.3.0 xkb files do achieve the same result ?

I tried that as well and it does not work either. Some makefiles have CC
hard coded as '/usr/bin/cc'

I did a make distclean on the tree and all the Makefiles with
'/usr/bin/cc' and '/usr/bin/cpp' hard coded went away though
there are still a couple of Imakefiles with 'cc' hardcoded.
i.e. programs/Xserver/os/Imakefile and programs/rgb/Imakefile
and /usr/bin/cpp is defined in linux.cf.

It appears most of the paths must come from imakemdep.h
and imake.c.

If this only happens with a display manager, it's probably the server
recycle problem being investigated, which you might be able to work
around by telling the display manager to always restart the server.

[XFree86] The Uncertainty Principle Is Untenable

2003-03-04 Thread sastone
please reply to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
thank you.

THE UNCERTAINTY PRINCIPLE IS UNTENABLE

By re-analysing Heisenberg's Gamma-Ray Microscope experiment and the ideal experiment
from which the uncertainty principle is derived, it is actually found that the
uncertainty principle can not be obtained from them. It is therefore found to be
untenable.

Key words:
uncertainty principle; Heisenberg's Gamma-Ray Microscope Experiment; ideal experiment

Ideal Experiment 1

 Heisenberg's Gamma-Ray Microscope Experiment

A free electron sits directly beneath the center of the microscope's lens (please see
AIP page http://www.aip.org/history/heisenberg/p08b.htm or diagram below) . The
circular lens forms a cone of angle 2A from the electron. The electron is then
illuminated from the left by gamma rays--high energy light which has the shortest
wavelength. These yield the highest resolution, for according to a principle of wave
optics, the microscope can resolve (that is, "see" or distinguish) objects to a size
of dx, which is related to and to the wavelength L of the gamma ray, by the
expression:

dx = L/(2sinA) (1)

However, in quantum mechanics, where a light wave can act like a particle, a gamma ray
striking an electron gives it a kick. At the moment the light is diffracted by the
electron into the microscope lens, the electron is thrust to the right. To be observed
by the microscope, the gamma ray must be scattered into any angle within the cone of
angle 2A. In quantum mechanics, the gamma ray carries momentum as if it were a
particle. The total momentum p is related to the wavelength by the formula,

p = h / L, where h is Planck's constant. (2)

In the extreme case of diffraction of the gamma ray to the right edge of the lens, the
total momentum would be the sum of the electron's momentum P'x in the x direction and
the gamma ray's momentum in the x direction:

P' x + (h sinA) / L', where L' is the wavelength of the deflected gamma ray.

In the other extreme, the observed gamma ray recoils backward, just hitting the left
edge of the lens. In this case, the total momentum in the x direction is:

P''x - (h sinA) / L''.

The final x momentum in each case must equal the initial x momentum, since momentum is
conserved. Therefore, the final x momenta are equal to each other:

P'x + (h sinA) / L' = P''x - (h sinA) / L'' (3)

If A is small, then the wavelengths are approximately the same,

L' ~ L" ~ L. So we have

P''x - P'x = dPx ~ 2h sinA / L (4)

Since dx = L/(2 sinA), we obtain a reciprocal relationship between the minimum
uncertainty in the measured position, dx, of the electron along the x axis and the
uncertainty in its momentum, dPx, in the x direction:

dPx ~ h / dx or dPx dx ~ h. (5)

For more than minimum uncertainty, the "greater than" sign may added.

Except for the factor of 4pi and an equal sign, this is Heisenberg's uncertainty
relation for the simultaneous measurement of the position and momentum of an object.

Re-analysis

To be seen by the microscope, the gamma ray must be scattered into any angle within
the cone of angle 2A.

The microscope can resolve (that is, "see" or distinguish) objects to a size of dx,
which is related to and to the wavelength L of the gamma ray, by the expression:

dx = L/(2sinA) (1)

This is the resolving limit of the microscope and it is the uncertain quantity of the
object's position.

The microscope can not see the object whose size is smaller than its resolving limit,
dx. Therefore, to be seen by the microscope, the size of the electron must be larger
than or equal to the resolving limit.

But if the size of the electron is larger than or equal to the resolving limit dx, the
electron will not be in the range dx. Therefore, dx can not be deemed to be the
uncertain quantity of the electron's position which can be seen by the microscope, but
deemed to be the uncertain quantity of the electron's position which can not be seen
by the microscope. To repeat, dx is uncertainty in the electron's position which can
not be seen by the microscope.

To be seen by the microscope, the gamma ray must be scattered into any angle within
the cone of angle 2A, so we can measure the momentum of the electron.

dPx is the uncertainty in the electron's momentum which can be seen by microscope.

What relates to dx is the electron where the size is smaller than the resolving limit.
When the electron is in the range dx, it can not be seen by the microscope, so its
position is uncertain.

What relates to dPx is the electron where the size is larger than or equal to the
resolving limit .The electron is not in the range dx, so it can be seen by the
microscope and its position is certain.

Therefore, the electron which relates to dx and dPx respectively is not the same. What
we can see is the electron where the size is larger than or equal to the resolving
limit dx and has a certain position, dx = 0.

[XFree86] Squashed Screen Problem

2003-03-04 Thread Darrell Blake
Hi,

I've got a problem with my X configuration which is hindering me playing some
games in winex. For some reason unless the games run in 1024x768 (which is my
default desktop resolution) the sides of the screen are squashed like the
image is being displayed under a glass. At 800x600 they run OK too but
definately not at 640x480. My screen section of my XF86Config looks like
this...

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Card0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 16
SubSection "Display"
Depth 1
Modes "1024x768" "640x480" "800x600"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 4
Modes "1024x768" "640x480" "800x600"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 8
Modes "1024x768" "640x480" "800x600"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 15
Modes "1024x768" "640x480" "800x600"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1024x768" "640x480" "800x600"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768" "640x480" "800x600"
EndSubSection
EndSection

I had this problem with the squashing before when I used to use xf86config to
create my XF86Config file but since I started editing it myself or using
slackware's XF86Setup my display looks correct. Even in windows I had the
squashed problem. I got around this by setting the refresh rate to 75hz. Any
higher or lower and the sides of the screen get squashed or stretched
respectively. The only way I can get around this is by running 640x480 games
in a window on my desktop which I don't really like doing.

Also, just a wondering. If I added a higher resolution to my Modes is it
possible to still get X to use 1024x768? I added one higher but X started
using that as the default.

Please help,

Darrell

[XFree86] Problems with clone-mode in Dualhead

2003-03-04 Thread Jan Lessing
Hi

I'm working an a multihead system (Geforce2 AGP, TNT2 PCI) using XFree
4.2.0 and special nvidia Driver

- Xinerama works fine
- "traditional mode" works fine
- clone doesn't work
If I want to clone the primary display to the secondary display using
the /etc/X11/XF86config option "Clone" "on" nothing happens. It is still
the same like "taditional mode".

can anybody help me?

thanks, Jan

Re: [XFree86] Disabling ARGB cursors in 4.3.0?

2003-03-04 Thread Felipe Alfaro Solana
Yes, it worked!
You can also edit /etc/X11/Xresources and place the line: "Xcursor.core: 1"

Thanks!

That's the point, the motherboard BIOS doesn't have any option for this.
I thought that is possible to bypass the motherboard BIOS completely and
access the card directly. I've recently read that in today computers the BIOS
is somehow obsolete (because of ACPI?) and it can be bypassed entirely. When
compiling the linux kernel I know that there is an option for PCI card
detection: to use the BIOS or to do it without.
I'm not very familiar with all these things, this is why I'm asking more
knoledgable people on the list. Of course Dell doesn't want to support such a
configuration (on the other hand they didn't want to sell me a workstation
with an non-onboard video card and without windows).

Thanks,
mache
