[XFree86] Xserver will not start

2003-03-16 Thread Nathaniel Woods

I have an HP 9000/720 with the Pa
Risc "Cobra" processor.  Everything is modular.  I am running
Debian HPPA.  The graphics card is not PCI and xserver will not load.
It gives the "No Screens Found" error. It has the Coral SGC Graphics.
Could anyone please help me get Xserver running.

Assuming that the monitor will talk to you, you should be able to get
those by looking at the DDC info in the logfile, from X -configure,
or by running /usr/sbin/ddcprobe.

If the monitor isn't being friendly, here is the VESA GTF standard
compliant mode that "gtf 1680 1050 60" reports:
  # 1680x1050 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 65.22 kHz; pclk: 147.14 MHz
  Modeline "1680x1050_60.00" 147.14 1680 1784 1968 2256 1050 1051 1054 1087 -HSync
+Vsync
(This uses default flyback ratios: digital screens can get away
with smaller "porches", so this may not match what your monitor
reports via DDC).

Are you using the framebuffer? That can sometimes freeze when leaving x.

[XFree86] In search of updated trident_drv.o for XF4.2

2003-03-16 Thread David Bell
I'm running the latest version of Xfree86 in Debian Sid (4.2.1-6) on my
laptop. Directly after the switch to 4.2, in November or so, myself and
many others experienced an odd distortion of the colors when using the
trident_drv module. Fortunately, an updated module was made available
on http://www.xfree86.org/~alanh/. ...This solved the problem.
Unfortunately, during a recent apt-get upgrade, this trident_drv.o was
overwritten. Had I been thinking, I should have made a copy of the
module, or added a diversion to apt earlier. It seems someone else is
in my situation:
http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg03320.html. However,
nobody provided the module in that thread. Sure, upgrading to XFree 4.3
is the best solution, but, it isn't always perfect for everyone. I will
wait to upgrade until the Debian X guys build the XF4.3 packages.
...They've done a great job so far, and I'd be much more confident in an
official Debian X package than one compiled by myself. Until XF4.3 is
available in Sid (Likely, quite some time from now -- It takes time to
get everything running on all those architectures), or I am provided the
corrected trident driver for XF4.2, I will be without X on my laptop.

If anyone has this module, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Tom

I don't believe so. The only frame buffer I know about is when I use the vga option from LILO -- and up until an hour ago I couldn't use LILO because my mainboard didn't recognize my hard drive. I flashed my BIOS to fix that, also in hopes to fix X somehow. Didn't fix X. But I did find out that it has no problem using a different video card/mainboard/cpu. Could it somehow be a conflict between the savage driver and GDM? I feel like I've made progress, but I'm not sure how much or in which direction.

Post the more of the log so we can see what driver etc it's using. Also, what

It doesn't have to be an (EE) error. It might just be a (WW) warning.
Make sure you have agpgart support loaded, and the kernel radeon module
has also been loaded, and that /dev/dri and /dev/dri/card0 are there and
accessible.

I also have this problem with my Matrox G400.
I noticed this problem about 1 month and a half ago, while I was trying
Xfree86-4.2.99.X. I didn't change anything from my configuration except
from recompiling the Xfree. This problem happens with either 2.4.21-preX
or with 2.5.64, with matroxfb on or not.

Update: the freeze can occur on any level: But it doesn't seem to
occur on the first level I choose to play. I _can_ kill X with a
KILL signal, and shutdown -r will work cleanly: I just can't restart
X without a reboot first: If I do [ restart X ] the signal to the
monitor cuts out and it goes into standby mode, and the machine
becomes completely unresponsive.

No, but there tend to be problems on server reset because those code
paths are only rarely tested in the drivers - see the recent threads
about lockups on server reset with the radeon driver.

Restarting the server instead of only resetting it usually works around
these problems; for gdm, set

AlwaysRestartServer=true

in gdm.conf to achieve that.

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting

on my GF2MX200 and ftp://ftp.nest.pld.org.pl/test/athlon/ packages.
AFAIR in previous versions (4.2.x) it was working fine.
Is it my soft/hardware problem or anyone else noticed the same reaction?

I want to reduce memory being used in order to use the rest as a
ramdisk.

Hi,

I'm using a Debian GNU/Linux System. After

[XFree86] single-head DVI out from radeon 9000?

2003-03-16 Thread Idan Gazit
Hey everybody,

So, I've trolled the lists and googled the nets in search of an answer,
but everything I seem to come across deals with dual-headed output or
some other wierd combo. My situation is simpler:

* x86 linux / xfree 4.3.0 + DRI + xfree radeon drivers (NOT ati clossed src)
* 1 powered-by-ati radeon 9000 with dvi, vga, and composite out. *ONLY*
the DVI out is occupied by a DVI cable, hooked up to...
* 1 flat panel monitor (a sony SDM-M81)

It seems that ddc seems to correctly recognize the fact that I have a
flat panel hooked up, but proceeds to dump me into analog mode (e.g.
delivers an analog signal over the dvi cable) every time I boot into xfree:

--- snip ---
(II) RADEON(0): I2C EDID Info:
(II) RADEON(0): Manufacturer: SNY Model: 480 Serial# 407256
(II) RADEON(0): Year: 2001 Week: 29
(II) RADEON(0): EDID Version: 1.2
(II) RADEON(0): Digital Display Input
--- snip ---
Also, perhaps of note -- I'm not using the (experimental?) radeonfb
module at the kernel level for console fb support. Should I be?

Basically, my monitor displays 1280x1024x24bits just fine as analog,
albeit very fuzzy. I have no trouble getting the digital display under
The Other Operating System. How do I get xfree to use the DVI out as a
digital connector? I'm not shy of cvs and recompilation -- just lay it
on me. :) Any suggestions most most welcome.

TIA,

Idan

also, is there a way of unloading and reloading the bttv module?

This is really a question for video4linux-list.

  https://listman.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/video4linux-list

What card do you have? If it's from the tuner input that you're only
getting b/w, it's likely that the tuner is being misdetected.

Actually in the latest version of GDM it's default to restart the server:

# If you are having trouble with using a single server for a long time and

# want gdm to kill/restart the server, turn this on

# Note: I've made this default to true now because there seem to be some

# issues ranging from some things not being reset in the X server to

# pam issues with the slave.  It is likely that this feature may be removed

# in the future and we're always going to do server restarts.

I don't understand that. What does reducing the amount of
videoram have to do with a ramdisk?

I see no reason to force VideoRam to lower than what there
actually is, but if you do it's possible that something in
core XFree86 code requires it to be a power of two. Write combine
ranges can only be setup on power of two apertures. Nothing in
the "nv" driver has changed in this respect.

Re: [XFree86] XFree86 + 20" Apple Cinema Display

2003-03-16 Thread Mark Vojkovich
I thought that monitor was 1600x1024. At least older ones were.
I know of someone who got the 1600x1024 model working. It used the
same modeline as the SGI flat panel.

   Gtf says:

  # 1680x1050 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 65.22 kHz; pclk: 147.14 MHz
  Modeline "1680x1050_60.00" 147.14 1680 1784 1968 2256 1050 1051 1054 1087 -HSync
+Vsync

Does this monitor have the apple display connector? You have an
adaptor of some sort, I presume. I know the monitor has USB controls
for brightness and such. I don't know how one would set those under
Linux. I assume by "tainted" you mean the mode timings aren't correct
rather than just color balance or brightness being out of whack
(which, I suppose, could be due to the lack of USB control).

I've had no problems with the binary drivers and Intel chipsets.

Looks like the patch wasn't applied correctly, maybe someone who's
successfully using it with 4.3.0 can create a patch for you.

[XFree86] ATI Radeon AIW 8500DV DRI video mode switch lockup XF86 4.3.0

2003-03-16 Thread Donavan Pantke
Alright guys, here's my situation: I have an ATI AIW 8500DV running
XF86
4.3.0, using SuSE RPMS form the release. When I have DRI enabled on the card,
I experience lockups when switching video modes. I can reproduce it with
Alt-F? screen switches, but it takes a few tries to get that to happen. I can
get it to happen right away by trying to run Diablo II using WineX. Symptoms
are screen lockup with no keyboard response. When I disable DRI by commenting
out the dri and glx modules, things are fine. DRI also works fine so long as
I'm not switching video modes. I also tried the GATOS drm/ati.2 combo, same
result. XF86Config is attached. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot further are
greatly appreciated.

[XFree86] Can someone help?

2003-03-16 Thread Mike Clouthier
Hello,
I recently attempted to load Linux 8.0 on my Compaq Presario 2700US laptop. X
server will not start due to an incompatability in detected display video settings. I
have attempted several alternatives and have tried using the redhat configurator,
xf86config, and XFree86 to resolve these settings. My laptop has a Radeon M6 Mobility
chipset with 1400x1050 screen area. Horizontal 31.5-90 and Vertical 59-75.
Attachments are forwarded as noted in log.

Thanks,

Mike Clouthier

[XFree86] Server problem in RH 7.3 version.

2003-03-16 Thread MALKIAT BENIPAL
Sir,
While logging as a user and issuing the command as startx I get the following error over RH 7.3. I would like to add that I am able to run startx as root user but not as a  other user. I am also able to run startx in graphical mode ie. runlevel 5 but not in runlevel 3 (text mode login)
Please help me a solution to get rid of this problem.
The error goes like this while issuing startx as stated above :
Fatel Server error :
can not open log file "var/log/Xfree86.0.log"
When reporting the problem related to the server crash, please send the
full report problems to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
giving up
Xinit : no such file or directory (error 2 ) : unable to connect to X server
Xinit : no such process (error 3) : server error.

Ramdisk located in video ram would be overwritten if something else (in
ths case - X) use this video ram.
I thought the idea up and Michal Schulz gave the solution and detailed
description, which you can find at:
http://hedera.linuxnews.pl/_news/2002/09/03/_long/1445.html
Caution in 5th point misses the true in the last sentence.
Is there another way to say to X not to touch specified region of video
memory?

As you can see it's good solution for limited memory systems with modern
graphics adapters (up to 128MB of VRAM).

I've tried 16384, 8192 and 4096 - these are powers of 2.

So where's the bug? Reducing works with tseng driver on my second video
board - ET6100.
