Re: usb keyboard
I'd like to add some support to X for my usb keyboard's extra multimedia keys (if it's not already there). It sends some keycodes to the linux kernel that can't be passed via the kernel's raw mode. From my research, it seems to me that the solution is to give X the ability to use the new linux input event interface (please correct me if I'm wrong). I'd like to add some support to do this, but I'm not quite sure where to start. Where would the best place be to add code for this capability? Any suggestions? Does such functionality already exist? http://people.debian.org/~warp/evdev/ -- Ivan U. Re: [GATOS]Translucent video-in playback
I worked on this for a while last night. the bottom line is that it works, but there are some problems that may or may not be surmountable. Per-pixel alpha seems to require that the framebuffer supports an alpha channel (eg. or , etc.). Xfree86 does not. so using that method seems to only produce a black overlay or a black graphics surface when the graphics or overlay alpha is adjusted. global alpha seems to work, but it is limited by the fact that the overlay is always on top. It mixes the graphics layer with the overlay layer. the problem is that the video output window is painted with the colorkey so it blends the video with the colorkey rather than the desktop and windows, etc. that are behind it. I'm not sure if you can disable the color key or not. That might be something for app writers to take up. it blends with the graphics layer nicely if you obscure the overlay with another window or adjust the overlay output position (x or y offset) such that it displays outside the graphics colorkey window. If anyone has any thoughts on how to make this work better let me know. I'll keep working on it as time permits. I'll post my patch once it gets cleaned up a bit. Alex --- Francesco [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Alex Deucher wrote: The video overlay on radeons can be blended with the graphics layer. It's pretty simple to code. I'm working on a patch to expose this functionality as an xv attribute, XV_ALPHA, however, I just recently got the databooks and haven't had time to finish it yet. Also, in regard to my XV_GAMMA patch, I'm working on a new one that uses the predefined gamma curves rather than directly programming the more advanced gamma registers. Re: [I18n] KeySyms 5 to 8, multiple character sequences
Hi, Basically, I cannot see how can you have a portable one-definition-fits-all keymap if such things change (keycodes and layout of the keyboard). Have a look at this mail : http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg01608.html Ivan U. Pascal explains there the new .XCompose and $XCOMPOSEFILE implemented in the 4.4.x : 1. one can use - include %L - to include the DEFAULT 'common' Compose file ( xlocaledir/locale name/Compose ) 2. then one can modify these rules using, for example, something like this - dead_grave A : Agrave - note here that you don't need to specify the code of this letter - it will be taken according the the current locale ... That I think makes it quite independent of the keyboard layout (well, I basically always use a keyboard which has west-european-ascii characters on it, plus some local language specific characters, so this is fine for me). The problem with this solution might be - it's an Xlib solution, not an Xserver one - again - all machines that run my xapplications would need to get the same .XCompose file (and have the Xlib coming from 4.4.x ...) For the time being I see no XServer based solution which would give the same as the one described above ... Re: [I18n] KeySyms 5 to 8, multiple character sequences
Hi Jacek, Jacek M. Holeczek [EMAIL PROTECTED] : Basically, I cannot see how can you have a portable one-definition-fits-all keymap if such things change (keycodes and layout of the keyboard). Have a look at this mail : http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg01608.html Ivan U. Pascal explains there the new .XCompose and $XCOMPOSEFILE implemented in the 4.4.x : ^^^ This is what the problem is -- the initial request was because of having to switch between several X servers, with probably only a tiny portion of them being XFree86 servers, let alone XFree86 4.4 (CVS or prerelease). XFree86 4.3 also has some very interesting features not present on other X servers (like multi-layout combining) or earlier XFree86's, but in such cases it would be best to create standalone file from xkbcomp, and carry that with you and use it wherever is the XKB available. Simply, xkbcomp provided with earlier XFree86's or other X servers is incapable of joining multiple layouts, but the resulting already-combined map can be used without any problems. The keycodes shouldn't differ much, but that means that you might have problems with eg. Lock and Control switching places, or similar. Still, regarding the circumstances, I'm still convinced that this is the best (partly) solution. Perhaps it's also possible to I've also tried this and removed the keycodes section from the generated file, and it seemed to work fine on XFree86 4.3 (please report how it works for other systems): (you do the following on the system with a sr map you'd like to use everywhere) $ setxkbmap sr -print | xkbcomp -o sr.xkb -xkb - (now you remove the xkb_keycodes section from generated sr.xkb and you carry sr.xkb to other systems, and do the following on other systems) $ xkbcomp -merge -synch -a sr.xkb :0.0 Of course, adjust setxkbmap command, and display (:0.0) part of xkbcomp command to suit your needs. This should make use of server provided definitions of keycodes (that's what -merge should do, though it worked for me even without that option on XFree86 4.3), and they're basically like coordinates: AE03 indicates fifth-row, third key (or was it zero-based and fourth key?). If all the other servers have this kind of mapping, this should probably work (but I'm just guessing, please test and report back). Sorry i get straight to the point: i read on the Intel website that they gave to Xfree86.org the 82845G video card drivers for Linux. (something like). Intel also says that the next releases of Xfree86 will contain a native driver for this card, but at the present day we can use the VESA native driver. Yes, but i can run only in 640x480 mode, no more, no less; i want at least 800x600!!! what can I do? help me! I think you should know the following: 1) I have Xfree86 4.3.0 2) The boot says ¨display(s) found, but no valid mode¨. 3) I am a real ignorant, so maybe I did something overtly wrong and I don´t know; please be merciful and try to help me anyway. The probed driver was i810, but the same. When I change my video configuration under GNOME, i choose e.g. ¨1024x768¨ from the drop-down list; there is a picture of the desktop on a black surface, with a white rectangle around it that changes dimension in proportion to the resolution. When i reboot i get the same rectangle i left (so some datas are saved) but the real desktop and its picture are still small. [XFree86] desktop shortcuts
I install an application using an rpm file, and I would like for a shortcut to the application to be placed on the desktop upon installation. Is there a general place to where .desktop files can be placed? E.g a shortcut to the application needs to be created for all user accounts in the system. I know .desktop files can be placed in /home/user/.gnome-desktop or /home/user/Desktop. But can a .desktop file be place somewhere higher up for all user accounts irrespective of the WM they are using? Thanx a lot for anyone offering his/her help in advance! D. [XFree86] X configuration for a 25Khz arcade monitor
Hi all, I would like to set up my own mame arcade cabinet, I saw that lot of people use AdvanceMame that programs good frequencies directly to the video card, but I don't want to use AdvanceMenu, I want to code my own menu using SDL under X. But as I don't know very much about this, I would like to know if it is possible to write a modeline for X so it will use a 640x480 resolution using a 25Khz horizontal frequency and a 60Hz Vertical frequency. And if it's possible, do I need to get a special gfx card, or is there a chance it will work on my old Nvidia Riva TNT 2 ? Here are the specification of my monitor : MEDIUM RESOLUTION HORIZONTALVERTICAL Scan Frequency: 25.00 KHzScan Frequency: 60.0 Hz Scan Period: 40.0 µSec Scan Period: 16.7 mSec Active Video: 32.0 µSec Active Video: 15.4 mSec Video Delay: 7.2 µSec Video Delay: 1.2 mSec Sync Pulse: 4.0 µSecSync Pulse: 0.2 mSec Scan Line: 640 Pixels Screen: 416 Lines Resolution: 512 Pixels Resolution: 384 Lines Clock Freq: 16.00 MHz Thanks in advance for your response, this list is my last hope to get my cabinet working ! :)) ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86
[XFree86] TFT Lcd 5.6 Screen trident 9685 tv-out...
Hello all, I am trying to use an TFT Lcd 5.6 screen on my computer with a trident 9685 tv-out 4mb pci card. When i use the vga port on a regular 15 sansung monitor, xfree works very well with a 640x480 resolution, but when i try to use the tv-out ntsc port of the camera, swiching the jumper on the graphic card, that allow the card to boot from the tv-out port the linux console works well on the Lcd screen but when i issue an startx, i get some refresh sync errors, and the image shakes a lot. Using win98 and the trident driver, i can use the tv-out feature with no problem on 640x480 resolution, only on xfree it is not working, so i think it may be a xfree configuration problem. My XF86Config-4 file is set to use 16bit color, 640x480 resolution and the monitor section is set to 31.5 horizontal refresh rate and 50-70 vertical refresh rate. I found some information to use a modeline 640x480i 14.61 line on the XF86Config-4 file, but when i type this line, xfree don't even start. So can someone help me. I don't want to use windows on this machine at all. Tanks a lot. Cyro Brazil ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86
Re: [XFree86] X configuration for a 25Khz arcade monitor
very much about this, I would like to know if it is possible to write a modeline for X so it will use a 640x480 resolution using a 25Khz horizontal frequency and a 60Hz Vertical frequency. I've played around with the modeline generator at http://xtiming.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/xtiming.pl, but I haven't been able to come up with a modeline at exactly 25KHz. Simplest I could get away with was somewhere between 30 and 31KHz. I have my doubts whether you can run resolutions that high *cough* at a frequency that low. Would you consider a (slightly?) lower resolution for your SDL program? Regards, Pieter Hulshoff ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

[XFree86] Overlay Xinerama?
Okay. I've tried, repeatedly (and failed thus far) to get Xinerama with 24+8 overlay working with two MGA cards. I can get Xinerama OR overlay to work with a dual-head MGA, but apparently overlay isn't supported on the second head. So I tried two cards, and can't get them both to work. Sadly, searching the archives for (dual-head|xinerama)MGA just turns up lots of stuff about the dual-head G450 and the like, and posting here (see http://www.cubik.ca/archives/xfree86/msg00398.html for the post) elicited no responses. So: does anyone have ANY suggestion for a tried, proven, working dual-head Xinerama solution that supports 24+8 overlay? It would be much appreciated. Re: [XFree86] X configuration for a 25Khz arcade monitor
You might study http://en.tldp.org/HOWTO/XFree86-Video-Timings-HOWTO/ It has most of the details. The refresh is (dot clock Hz)/(total x * total y) and the scan is dot clock Hz)/(total x --the largest number in the x part of the modeline) There may be limitations on the graphic card and the monitor, of course. Regards, Paul Nielsen [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I've played around with the modeline generator at http://xtiming.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/xtiming.pl, but I haven't been able to come up with a modeline at exactly 25KHz. I still have a question about this (a silly one because I don't know much about technical details related to video frenquencies) Why isn't it possible to run this resolution at a lower frequency and why isn't possible to run a lower resolution (eg 256x224) at a higher frequency (25Khz) ? Where is the limitation ? In the graphics cards or is it simply the way frequencies should work ? If the limitation is about graphic card, does exists some special cards which allows to do such things ? PS: sorry for these newbie questions, but I previously googled a lot on this subject and found nothing, i'm deseperated :) ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

[XFree86] XFree 4.3.0 loading incorrect driver
Hi all, I've upgraded my kernel, using a radeon 7500 mobility. However I lost DRI. Now direct rendering is off and I can't get it back on. I have radeon module from xfree-drm loaded but it's not being used becase Xfree is loading the radeon module that comes with xfree which it seems that it doesn't make DRI available. How can I specify in xfconfig what's the driver I wish to load? (Can I include a path?) Best regards, -- Paulo J. [XFree86] XFree 4.2 on Siemens Mobile 501
Hello, I tried to install XFree 4.2 on a Siemens Mobile 501, a laptop with Neomagic 128XD graphicschip and ES 1869 soundchip. When I try to play a sound while running X with the neomagic-driver, the system freezes. This problem does not appear with the 3.3.6 XSVGA-server. The distribution is debian sid running kernel 2.4.22. Using an old kernel or an older version of debian did not solve the problem. [XFree86] S3 driver bug
Hello XFree team, I sent a mail some days ago but was not yet registerd at XFree86.Org. In the meantime, I found out that the bug disappears when the noaccel option is specified in XF86Config. Regards, Klaus Peichl Original mail: I have a problem with the S3 driver in XFree86 4.3.0 which was not present in XFree86 3.3.3. I have installed an S3 Trio 64 card and I am running SuSE-Linux 8.2. The S3 driver does not seem to draw sloping lines correctly. It seems that lines start at the correct position but get drawn into the wrong direction. Some programs (like MiXViews) are quite unusable. As an example, I attachd a snapshot of the color edit dialog of xv. You can see problems with the scales and outlines of arrows there. It might be only a small bug which I could maybe even fix myself, but I guess it's not feasible downloading all sources with a 56k modem, is it? I hope that someone can help me. It would be a a pity if the newer driver could not be used because of only a small bug. Thanks in advance, best regards, Klaus Peichl ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

[XFree86] Compiling errors when compiling XFree86-4.3.99.14 and .15
Hi, I'm stuck now. I figured out that I needed bison and flex and that I had to make a change to the Imakefile of xc/lib/lbxutil/lbx_zlib, I needed to add -I../../../extras/ zlib. It seems that someone moved zlib files out of ../../zlib. However, this next one is more difficult to resolve. In /xc/lib/GLU/libnurbs/ nurbtess, the Imakefile and the Makefile for some reason starts compiling using c++ instead of gcc. I've tried to figure out why and how I can change it, but that seems beyond my capabilities. I've tried the gcc settings of site.def file, with no success. At one point I got the edit that the S3 Tri video card was unsupported. It suggested that I try aGeneric VGA compatable card. Consequently I got the X server running. And it is going right into a KDE home page. Unfortionately only half the CRT screen is populated. All the top of the KDE screen is missing all I get is the lower half of the screen. All the characters are large--low resolution. Consequently using XFdrake I have been searching resolution setting. The only constant I have been using is the Custom setting for the Video Card. I might be getting the X server going but I am only able to get a half screen. Any suggestion would be appreciated thanks Larry Kelly [EMAIL PROTECTED] _ Need a shot of Hank Williams or Patsy Cline?
