2006-05-17 Thread Mark Vojkovich
This seems to happen on RedHat systems for reasons unknown.
Something in the system appears to have deleted crucial XFree86
modules. The only solution I know of is to reintstall XFree86,
or at least reinstall the modules.

When running under VMWare, you need to use the vmware driver, not the driver
for your actual card. Modify /etc/X11/XF86Config accordingly.

If the documentation for the X server says that the nv driver supports

chipset?

The current nv driver from CVS supports all known NVIDIA graphics
chips. The one you have only supports chips that came out before it
was released. Device not found is the typical response a driver gives
when it doesn't recognize a chip that it supports.

If you can tell me which card you have, I can tell you when it
was first supported in the nv driver.

This is normally taken care of by commenting out the line that starts with
fonts in your xf86config file.
I am not sure until you send the whole file.

- ls /usr/X11R6/lib - listing shows also X11
- ls /usr/X11R6/lib/X11 - Error message: Input/output error

When I start Linux, it also gives:

Your font server isn't running. See the man page on 'xfs'.
Also, RedHat probably has some utility to configure and start the
font server. It used to be you could enable it via ntsysv.

so this is redhat specific. Maybe your font server isn't running. But for that

Since we're talking about C++ here, I can presume that what's on my plain

you should not have specified this:
cd the directory containing the xcdirectory
mkdir build
lndir ../xc

added line cd build before lndir command:

cd the directory containing the xcdirectory

The problem was fixed by this modification.
Quite right. I have just committed a change to rectify this. Thanks for

My old computer (1999?) was showing signs of hardware failure (power

So I transferred my hard drive to a Lindows machine my husband bought
and determined he couldn't use (I added more RAM while I had the box open).

RedHat7.2 appeared to detect all my new hardware and all the services
came up okay (the mouse and keyboard worked). But I couldn't get
XWindows to start. I read the error message which said to upgrade to
the correct version before sending in the logfile. I did that. I still
can't get XWindows to start. Here's the logfile.

BTW, I also ran fsck due to unclean shutdowns and fixed inode errors.

thank you for checking!

yes, i habe the same problem, without any window manager.

when i say in my xfree86config
 Option Xinerama false
working all software without any hangs on all screens.

can you test the eagle software with you xserver ?
the eagle software is an electronic circuits drawing programm from
 cardsoft http://www.cadsoft.de
you can download the software from:
 ftp://ftp.cadsoft.de/pub/program/4.11/eagle-4.11g.tgz or as rpm :

This works fine for me. I get a circuit diagram and I can move the

two NVIDIA GeForce4 MX cards (one AGP and one PCI) in Xinerama. Both
are in 1600x1200 making a 3200x1200 desktop. I tried this with both
NVIDIA's binary driver and the nv driver that comes with XFree86 4.4.

I suspect an mga driver bug or some other obscure problem. Here are
 some things you can try:

 1) Don't load the dri or glx modules in the XF86Config. This

 2) Try Option NoAccel for all cards. This would rule out a driver

 3) Don't load the freetype module. This would rule out a font renderer

 4) I notice the driver didn't autodetect the amount of VideoRam on

The error is printed by the module loader. It means that the linker
used a relocation type not supported by the loader. This is caused by
the fact that newer binutils versions sometimes use some relocation
types not used in previous versions. Support for these types has been
added to xfree86. Use the latest version. There was a while when I
had to use a slightly old gcc version to make it work too, but I can't
remember which version that was. Anyhow, I think that problem has
been fixed as well.

It is likely, I think, that you don't understand that the stock Xvnc
does *not* permit 'co-pilot' operation of a desktop visible on a
hardware video adapter, as the Windows servers do.

Xvnc expects to run in the background, and *only* be connected to by
remot clients -- if you want to talk to a stock Xvnc from it's local
machine, you have to run a vncviewer client *on the real X server*...

and it's that Xserver that your Xvnc server is likely colliding with,
since it lives, by default, on :0, which is probably where your Xvnc
server is trying to go too.

If that's not enough hint, reply to the list and we'll try to explain
further.

XFree86 Version 4.0.1a / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6400)
Release Date: 2 August 2000
If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is newer
than the above date, look for a newer version before reporting
problems. (see http://www.XFree86.Org/FAQ)

Your video card is a few years newer than your X-server. Your
video card wasn't officially supported until XFree86 4.4. NVIDIA
has binary Linux drivers on the NVIDIA web site. I'm not sure if
they work with servers as old as 4.0.1a though (they used to, but
I'm not sure if that's still true).

Your font server has crashed.
http://xfree86.linuxwiki.org/FAQErrorMessages#head-66113454d1ddc398ffb1e

The full partition may be the cause of the crash or it could be
unrelated. It would depend on which partition is full. The best way to
fix a partition that is too small is to remove unnecessary stuff until
it isn't full. If that is not possible then you will need to
re-partition your harddrive which probably means a re-install too. Some
distros have tools to grow partitions, I don't know if Mandrake is one
of them nor do I know how reliable they are where they exist.

does anyone know how I should go about repairing the file and which file
I need to repair,

Your font server has crashed.

Your mouse is not configured correctly. Try reconfiguring XFree86.

http://xfree86.linuxwiki.org/ConfigurationHelp The X -configure option
is the easiest IMO.

Also, if you are still having problems after you try this send us the
log (/var/log/XFree86.0.log) itself rather than a screenshot and don't
use the .doc format.

2004-04-10 Thread Mark Vojkovich
You could try upgrading to 4.4. It looks like XFree86's bus
probing hung on something. It could be some strange XFree86 bug
that your system exercises or the result of address space conflicts
created by a buggy system bios. Is your system unusual in some
way? I notice you are using a bigmem kernel. Do you have
large amounts or ram? Often, algorithms that system bioses use
aren't robust enough to deal with the small amount of free
physical address space available on big memory systems.

ATM there's no XFree86 4.4 Debian package (and no one knows if there'll be in
the future). To start, you should try XFree 4.3.0, available in Debian unstable
apt-get -t unstable install xfree86-common

Perhaps you need to upgrade a lot of other packages, but I've an ATI Radeon 9600
Mobility M10 and it works fine on Debian unstable, XFree86 4.3.0 and open-source
DRI radeon driver (even in dual-head).

any other suggestion ? i mean it has to be sth. with kde and xserver together,

I suggest you to try as above and *then*, if it doesn't still work, you can
think about XFree86 4.4.

2004-03-24 Thread Paulo Belletato
Dear Mark,

Thank you for your replay,

I'm not understanding why that simple opengl program gives the message:

Xlib: extension XFree86-DRI missing on display :0.0.

I belive that is the use of GLUT library, because I've already commented
the line Load dri from XF86Config and restarted X. When I run the
program, the message was the same.

Since I do not see any references to DRI on the program and according your
message DRI should not be necessary to run opengl programs, I belive that
the glut.h header should use some DRI resources, Am I correct?

I've got the program from: http:www.opengl.org and I'm attaching the
program in this message. This may help understanding the problem.

#include GL/gl.h
#include GL/glut.h

glEnd();

/* don't wait!

int main(int argc, char** argv)
{

 My system is a FreeBSD 4.8-RELEASE #0: Thu Apr 3 10:53:38 GMT 2003

I could compile a simple example, but when trying to run the ./a.out prog.
 I received the message:

GLUT: Fatal Error in a.out: OpenGL GLX extension not supported by display: :0.0

I could eliminate that problem including the line Load glx in my XF86Config
file. I also added the Load dri in the same file. But now trying to run the
a.out program I get the message:

Xlib: extension XFree86-DRI missing on display :0.0.

The DRI extension should not be required for OpenGL to work.

I've found some related messages in this list that discussed this problem but
I didn't understand what should I do to solve it.

I have no experience with graphics programming so I have some elementary doubts:

 1. Are there any TUTORIAL to solve this problem?
 2. Should I download and install the NVIDIA driver from NVIDIA Corp.?

If you want hardware accelerated OpenGL, then yes.

 3. Is this card compatible with 3D acceleration?

The nv driver that comes with XFree86 does not support
HW 3D acceleration, but it should still work unaccelerated
with the OpenGL libraries and glx module that come with
XFree86. NVIDIA's binary drivers will replace XFree86's
GLX module and OpenGL libraries with ones that support HW
OpenGL acceleration on NVIDIA hardware.

 4. Should the examples from www.opengl.org run in a non-accelerated card?

They should run with even with the software OpenGL rendering
used by the nv driver.

You should be able to ignore that message. As part of libGL start-up it
tries to determine if direct rendering is available. With the
standard libGL, this means using DRI protocol. When it sends the
Hello? message to the X-server, the X-server tells it that it knows
nothing about DRI. Hence the message. From that point it should just
fallback to indirect rendering and work. Is that what you're seeing?

You won't see any references to DRI in your program. DRI means Direct
Rendering Infrastructure. It's how the standard XFree86 libGL, the
X-server, and the kernel work together to provide hardware accelerated
direct rendering. It all happens under the sheets, so to speak.

There appears to be a problem with the vesa driver you are using.
I assume you are using the vesa driver because your ATI card is newer
than your XFree86:

(--) PCI:*(1:0:0) ATI unknown chipset (0x5157) rev 0, Mem @ 0xc000/27, 0xcd0
0/16, I/O @ 0x9000/8

You can try the ati driver instead, but if that doesn't
work, I don't see that you have much choice than to upgrade to
something newer that supports that card, which appears to be
a Radeon 7500.

That is odd. In an earlier message you said that you have an Nvidia

Re: [XFree86] Error: Xlib: extension XFree86-DRI missing on display :0.0.

2004-03-24 Thread Paulo Belletato
Dear Ian,

I do not installed NVIDIA drivers, because I was affraid my X could not
restart anymore! So I didn't touch XFree86 Install. It's the original
installation from FREEBSD-4.8.

The most strange thing is that I run the program: glxgears (that from
/usr/X11R6/bin/glxgears) and It works properly! (with animations).
But I've found and downloaded a similar program from
http://www.opengl.org/resources/code/glut/glut_examples/mesademos/mesademos.html
(program gears.c) that shows the same picture from glxgears, and when I
run the compiled a.out program it doesn't work!!

But I do not belive any more that the problem is related to the message
Xlib: extension XFree86-DRI missing on display :0.0

That's because, like you suggested in the last message, when glxgears run,
it prints on the xterm exactly that message, but it works!

I would like to try compiling the sources that generated glxgears, but I
do not have their font.

I'm thinking in trying an upgrade to FreeBSD 5.0 that should came with
XFree-4.4.0 to see if this problem will disapear.

Thank you a lot, and also to Mike.

Hi all,

I'm trying to run some simple examples of opengl programs from a tutorial of
www.opengl.org in a Pentium III - 1GHz with a video card NVIDIA RIVA TNT2,
using XFree86 4.3.0 version 11, Revision 0, Release 6.6.
(Release Date: 27 February 2003)

They should run with even with the software OpenGL rendering
used by the nv driver.

package except Gnome. The installation was successful. But the startup did not
give me Gnome GUI. Then I changed default runlevel from 3 to 5, and rebooted.
Again I could not get X window. The following error message showed up in run
level 5 from time to time:

INIT: Id "X" respawing too fast: disabled for 5
miniutes.

At this point, I thought it might because I missed
X11 package during my installation. Therefore I upgraded the
installation
by adding the X11 component. The upgrade was
successful but I still could not get Gnome GUI. Finally I decided to configure X
from the shell. I tried XFree86 command but ended up with fatal error: no screen
found.

I have successfully installed Redhad Linux 6.0,
7.2, 7.3 and 9.0 in the past. With Redhat version 9.0, I succeeded in
installation in Dell PowerEdge 1600SC. Only one difference is probably
that I did pick up X11 package at the first place ofthat
installation. But now I have no clue about this error. Is it caused by
installation procedure or my video card or other problem? Please
advise.

Thanks,

Jason

Your font server isn't running. Start it with '/etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs start'
and try again.

If this doesn't work, check back in the xfree86.org list archives for info on
how to set manual font paths. As you're probably not interested in serving
fonts to other machines, I think you'll find it a lot easier to use standard
font paths instead of the fontserver.

You are using the nv driver that came with XFree86 in conjunction
with the GLX module that came with NVIDIA's drivers. This is incompatible.
If you want to run the nv driver that came with XFree86, remove
NVIDIA's GLX module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so.
If you wanted to run NVIDIA's drivers you need to complete the
installation (editing the XF86Config file to use Driver nvidia instead
of Driver nv, at least).

Any client which wants to talk to the server needs to have
authorization to do so. X is a network transparent window system
and it's what keeps *me* from popping windows up on *your* server.
It also keeps other processes on your system (potentially owned
by other users) from displaying or getting information from the
screen. That's what's happening in this case since it's rejecting
from localhost. Whatever is trying to connect to your server
doesn't have authorization to do so. I would guess it's a bug
in your display manager or a script related to it. Also, some
apps like xscreensaver can have this problem if you are running
as root. See the man page on xhost.

Eh, it was an unresolved symbol. Perhaps the nv_drv.ko is mismatched
with the other modules? There is also a FreeBSD port of the nvidia.ko
driver that works on both 4.x and 5.x.

For the list... Is XFree86 4.2.1 expected to work on FreeBSD 5?
It looks like it's crashing in some write combining code.

Those were just the messages before the unresolved symbol. I used
4.2.1 on FreeBSD 5.0-current from about a week after 4.2.1 came out
until last week when I updated to 4.3. Haven't had any problems
starting X specific to FreeBSD.

You can get unresolved symbol messages when exceptions happen
before a module that holds the symbol gets loaded. Unresolved
symbols are not necessarily the cause of the crash, but can be
a symptom of it.

You need to include the full /var/log/XFree86.0.log as it says in
that error. We can't tell from what you've given us, but it's likely
that your X-server is just too old and doesn't support that hardware.
XFree86 4.3 was released recently.

comenzo a fallar

no se si por esta razon.

Eso es extraño -- si Ud. no ha cambiado nada en la
configuración desde la ultima vez que estaba funcionando, solo el
hecho de cambiar el monitor no debería causar este problema.

Re: [XFree86] error message when loading X server

2003-03-19 Thread Philippe Moutarlier
Looks like X died abruptly and didn't remove its lock... which is there
exactly for preventing you to start another session on the same display :-).

Just remove the file its pointing you to : /tmp/.X0-lock

That log snippet is about the external output, are you trying to use
that? It might be a good idea to post the complete log file or at least
more snippets.

Attached is the XConfig.

Option CrtScreen is obsolete, and you shouldn't override the VideoRam,
but those shouldn't cause problems.
