[Xpert]how to rotate immediatly the siliconmotion server without restarting X

2002-02-18 Thread Robert Wörle

Hi

the siliconmotion driver now supports screen rotation by :
Option "ShadowFB" "on"
Option "Rotate" "CW"
or
Option "Rotate " "CCW"

It works jsut fine , but i ve to change the value in XF86config and the
restart X .

...
Is there a posible way to do the screen rotation by just envoking on
comand ??? and the screen rotates immediatly to the specific direction

May there a command where you could tell the running X-Server to change
a value ???

Yours Rob

[Xpert]single click becomes double clicks after suspend

2002-02-18 Thread Lau

Hi,

I've a problem in xfree86 4.2.0-2.1. Every time after
i suspend and resume my machine, every single left
mouse click would becomes double clicks.
e.g. in enlightenment, clicking the title once will
shade instead of moving
in gedit, xterm, single click over a word will
select the whole word instead of dragging the cursor
to select anything i want.
kde is not so serious, if click>wait 15
seconds>click again, will becomes double click.

The only way to solve the problem is to restart X.
I've tried stopping gpm, but no help. Logging out and
logging in again in gdm also don't help.

Someone in the xfree86 channel told me to use xev to
test mouse click. If i click inside the windows,
result before and after suspend is the same, one press
and one release. If i left click in title bar using
enlightenment, the result is different.

Attached please find 4 files:
okleftclicktitle before suspend, left click
title
okdoubleclicktitle before suspend, left click
title
leftclicktitle_aftersuspend after suspend, left
click title
doubleclicktitle_aftersuspend after suspend, double
click title

System:
ThinkPad T20
redhat 7.1 kernel 2.4.9-21
xfree86 4.2.0-2.1
mouse: logitech USB mouseman wheel, also has a
trackpoint(disabling either one still have the
problem)

Thanks for helping,

I am having trouble selecting Dell monitors in XFree86-4.1.0 in the
configuration program in mandrake 8.1. When I select a Dell Laptop display
for some reason it generates an error and I don't think the graphics card is
being fully utilized properly also. So, I am looking for updated drivers and
a configuration file for XFree86-4.1.0 in mandrake 8.1 that will correct
this deficiency since mandrake has not corrected it.

[Xpert]tdfx OpenGL

2002-02-18 Thread Jacek Popławski

I have serious problems with tdfx OpenGL and Return To Castle Wolfenstein.
First problem: when I start RTCW and switch from X to virtual console - XFree86
server dies (I can switch later, but not at beginning).
Second one: after playing few minutes - textures are completly messed, I can
see how it changes in realtime.
And last one: sometimes when I play system hangs. Completly.

I tried:
- XFree86-4.1.0
- XFree86-4.2.0
- many XFree86 CVS versions (from last months to yesterday)
- many kernel versions (2.4.x, -pre, and -ac, now I have 2.4.18-pre9-ac4 and it
  seems stable - except tdfx)
- Glide3 binary from dri.sf.net or compiled myself

It's not only RTCW problem - for example objects are messed in Blender (in its
older versions).

You can say it's application fault. But why there is no problem on other
hardware? And why everything works stable (but slw) on my hardware with
software rendering?

Do you know what else can I try (except switching from Voodoo3 to Radeon) ?

Other people I've asked say that cpp in gcc 3.0 still supports
-traditional. What's special about your configuration that makes it
not support -traditional ?

The -traditional flag is required with gcc's cpp because otherwise it
does silly things to imake input. (Adds white space before and after
macro expansion results, tries to interpret backslashes where it
should leave them alone, etc.)
It's really unfortnate if the GNU people have removed the -traditional
option to cpp in gcc 3.0.

XFree86 will have to provide a non broken C pre-processor for imake to
work with gcc 3, in this case.

The "workspace" is a window manager creation, not part of X,
so their is no way to tell X which desktop to use.
However, the window manager might have a "matched windows"
feature, so that it can be configured to recognize an incoming
window and place it on another desktop. For example, you
could set it so that all windows where the title starts with
"[2]" would go to desktop 2. Once the window is placed,
you can go back and remove the title prefix.

I couldn't find the benchmarks there. It must be somehwere in arkiv.
Was this with their newest update, which fixed several bugs?
I tested their driver with a Radeon SDR and an MGA-550. I found
some bugs (especially with stereo) which are fixed in the newest version.

My impression was that it has many fewer bugs than XFree86, but
also has fewer features available, but I didn't do thorough testing,
judst tried a few programs that I am interested in using.

Xig will give you updates, but if you buy a different video card,
you'll have to buy another server.

Re: [Xpert]Re: libxml needs iconv.h ?

2002-02-18 Thread Jim Gettys

It is certainly reasonable to want to see a proposal for an
XML DTD for an XFree86 config file.

The view of reality I see is that, for better or worse, XML is something
familiar to an increasingly large fraction of the user base (particularly
the hacker types who might edit such a file by hand), and the current
XFree86 config file syntax is not (nor is it friendly for building tools
to generate them). So if we take as a given wanting a config file syntax
that is both human and machine read/writeable easily, one can do alot worse
than XML (like where we are right now).

I've personally been burned by the config file's syntax in the last month
or two, as I reinstalled several of my systems, one of which ended up
broken after insall. And I've been burned by the quoting problem
used as the other example on several occasions.

So my opinion goes as follows:

1) We need to make the need for the XFree86 config file as small as
possible. We need to work hard at getting defaults right, so they don't
have to be edited in the first place, nor things specified, unless you
are doing something particularly unusual.

I give as a concrete first hand example: On my Matrox G450,
o the default depth is 8! So for it to be even semi-sane,
you have to go touch what is generated.
o Furthermore, to get TT fonts, you have to go edit the file
to add a module. I still don't understand why there are two
choices here for modules, other than some handwaving Keith gave
me about eastern fonts (we could make the default locale dependent
if necessary).
o And the mouse does not default to the most common
forms of mice currently found, (nor autodetect the protocol) etc
o And the server defaulted to trying to use the absolutely highest
supported resolution of my monitor (2100x1600), which, until we use
scalable fonts everywhere, is probably the wrong answer, much less
the fact the second DAC on the G450 can't go that fast, and will therefore
be wrong for xinerama.
There are therefore at least *four* things a poor user has to do to get
it going, even ignoring xinerama (which I've put off reenabling, preferring
to get work done to messing further with my config file any futher).

We can/should do *alot* better, folks. We're being sloppy, hiding behind
the fact the distribution vendors often clean up after us.

The problem with the view that the distro vendors fix it, is that if you
fall off the beaten path, you are currently in XF86Config file hell...
And then we end up with tons of support questions soaking our time,
along with alot of disgruntled people who say: "this open source software
stuff is for the birds".

Ideally, on sane hardware (which the industry is slowly moving
toward), the file can/should be empty, and the server work decently

I *really* don't want to get a merit badge for editing my configuration
file manually: I deserve one right now, unfortunately.

2) we need to bite the bullet and adopt a config file format
that is both amenable to hand editing (which we should minimize by 1),
and by tools (which is what most end users want and need). The
current format is not: or we'd have to build tools to write the format,
and such tools would have different API's than already being used for
other system configuration metadata, which seems to be most often using XML
these days.

I don't see the current situation as something we can/should live
with for any longer than absolutely necessary.

Don't take this as a statement of love for XML; I'd have preferred a
s-expression syntax, but due to the history of HTML coming from SGML,
we end up with <> as the dominant way of storing such data. Sigh But
it can be machine read and written, validated to a significant degree,
and hand edited when necessary (and then validated). This seems like
a win to me.

- Jim

I've gone ahead and recoded fontconfig to use expat instead of libxml2;
I'll import expat into the tree and have that built. Applications for
configuring fonts will need to use libxml2 as expat has no provisions for
XML output.

[Xpert]X locks up on nv driver with PowerMac G4 dual

2002-02-18 Thread F. Heitkamp

I am trying to get my X console to work with my
PowerMac G4 Snakebite dualie with GForce 2MX.
I am running Debian unstable but I compiled and
installed the latest Xfree86 CVS sources.

pmac:/usr# X -version

This is a pre-release version of XFree86, and is not supported in any
way. Bugs may be reported to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and patches submitted
to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Before reporting bugs in pre-release versions,
please check the latest version in the XFree86 CVS repository
(http://www.XFree86.Org/cvs)

XFree86 Version 4.2.99.1 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600)
Release Date: xx January 2002
If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is
newer than the above date, look for a newer version before
reporting problems. (See http://www.XFree86.Org/)
Build Operating System: Linux 2.4.18-pre8-ben0 ppc [ELF]
Module Loader present

What happens is when I start the latest version of Mozilla
(grabbed off mozilla.org) I can surf a bit. When I click
into the URL box and delete a dozen or so characters, X stops
working and the arrow cursor is flipped over.

I also encountered some errors when compiling X.
The errors were in /programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/loader
in the xf86sym.c file:
xf86sym.c:153: conflicting types for `outb'
and outw, outl, inb, inw, inl.
conflicting types in
/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/common/compiler.h:1110: previous declaration of `outb'

I ifdef'd the lines and got X to compile and install
 without any more errors.

[Xpert]request: xlib resources

2002-02-18 Thread Marc Bruenink

Hi

I'm searching for all kinds of resources concerning xlib. I've found
http://tronche.com/gui/x/xlib/introduction/
and i think this is a good tutorial but unfortunately it's
incomplete.

Further i've a problem using XGetFontPath() (segmentation fault) and i
didn't find the fault. Perhaps somebody knows where to find a sample
source concerning font loading, listing aso. ?

Xlib Mailinglists and IRC channels would be great

Even on X86 there are problems with the font renderers.
See if you can crash it without the "freetype" and "xtt" modules
loaded.

   Did the server segfault?

[Xpert]How to make /dev/dri/card0?

Greetings,

I'm trying to get X started with hardware support for my Voodoo-3 3000

When I look in /dev/dri the directory is empty. Everything else seems to
load without error and I have checked and rechecked that I have all the
"Load" commands in my XF86Config. Can anyone give me some info on how
these "card" devices are supposed to come into existence? I tried a
"/dev/MAKEDEV all" but that had no affect. Any insight would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks,
Matthew

[Xpert]SiS 530 DRI Out Of Memory Errors

2002-02-18 Thread T.P. Reitzel

From: T.P. Reitzel

To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Subject: SiS 530 DRI Out Of Memory Errors

I've been trying to narrow down the source of fatal
out of memory errors in the sis_dri.so library for about 3 weeks to no avail. I
noticed that someone else on the users mailing list at DRI Sourceforge is
having exactly the same problems with the SiS 730S chip. I'm currently using
XFree86 4.1, but I also tried 4.2 with no luck. I've also gone to using the
latest Alan Cox patches for the 2.4.18 kernel with no luck, either.
Instead of going into a lot more detail, see the attached XFree86.0.log
for my system. DRI appears to load successfully, but generates this error when
an openGL application such as glxgears is invoked.

[Xpert]Radeon VE & DVI output

2002-02-18 Thread Dave Slicer

My video card is flaking out and so I need a new one. I am planning on
getting a large flat panel display in a few months, so I looked only at
cards that provide a DVI output. There are some versions of the Radeon VE
that do just this, and meet all my minimal performance needs.

However, there are two things I can't seem to figure out. One, does Xfree86
support using the DVI output of the Radeon VE? I see messages in the list
referring to problems with this, but it wasn't clear if the problem was dual
display or just the DVI itself. And secondly, I can't figure out what the
maximum display resolution of the Radeon is on the DVI output. ATI's site
doesn't have it, nothing in the Xfree86 documentation mentions any limits at
all. But I know that the DVI spec is limited by its maximum frequency (165
MHz) and some cards support only 1280x1024 from the DVI port. I need
support for 1600x1200.

Thanks for any help/comments/suggestions!
