Definitely a nice record. Also check out a polish label's 001, Polish

obscure.

...It's got this guy saying the names of famous (mostly black) musicians,
activists, revolutionaries and leaders over sweeping synth chords, a
half-speed bassline and pounding 909 beats. At the beginning the bloke says
something like It's a black face, you better understand. There must be
abacus 'black thanx'.
this was orignally released on guidance--analog trax vol 1 (1997). was
re-released with a new mix on airtight last year.
it's also on my mix cd 'houseatonic' which is at temple records in new york.

16b is a guy from London called Omid Nourizadeh. He has released a lot of
stuff on his own Alola label, and he also has another label called
Disclosure, that's where he releases more techno-trancey material. He also
did a full album on Eye Q UK, that is worth checking. Some of his latest
releases

That are quite good. Some of the 16b material tends to be a bit noodly,
but these two pack a decent punch.
He also did some tracks with Kevin McKay of Glasgow underground as 16
souls...very good stuff indeed.
i know that the 808 was used a lot in mainstream music in the 80's and
whatnot. does anyone know how widely used it is today in hiphop/rnb/etc?
the rnb group blaque has a track called 808 and although im not a fan of
rnb, i was attracted to the song at first cause they sang about an 808

One word: Timbaland.

Well...not to disagree too publicly, but I'm not hearing it. The 808
kick is almost certainly used, but I'm almost as certain that it's
sampled, not played off the original machine. The other distinctive
elements (cowbell, clave, etc) aren't really present from what I've
heard.
The other thing is
blair: many of today's pop musicians don't have the
reverence for the 808 and other classic gear like
those on a list such as this might have. so, when
an 808's sounds do make it into one of today's
pop songs, it is likely just another drum sample,
nothing special,
to the person using it ie just
hello,
The 808 was a mainstay back in the 80's, but that stuff is rarely used
anymore. Ever since the first sampling drum machines started coming out
in the late 80's and early 90's (EMU sp-1200, Roger Linn's Akai
MPC-60...) the 808 has been fading out. You can really start to hear the
shift
while we're on the subject, anybody know of any recent tracks (the last few
years) with lots of 808 cowbells. i'm a sucka for that sound.

The Beastie Boys still use it.

Since this thread was inspired by the song 808 by Blaque Ivory, it should be
pointed out that it was actually produced by R Kelly outta Chicago, not the
group. So he's the one behind the 808 reference, I would say. The production
overall is very Timbaland-like, it's only the vocal arrangements
