This week's Wild Kingdom contains a tribute to recently passed author
Dan Sicko, whose book The Techno Rebels is a must-read for those who
want to investigate the roots of techno. I could have used that book
when I was trying to feel my way back in 94 and 95 - it's still a
vital resource
Dan's Techno Rebels is considered a bible here in Australia. Every DJ/
producer of note in Melbourne has a copy. It was such a key book.
I recall telling Visage bassist Barry Adamson he and Frequency 7 were
mentioned in the book and he was stunned - he's a Mancunian guy now
based in Sydney
Terrible news.

Very, very sad news. My thoughts are with his loved ones.

My condolences to his family.
I read Dan's book about 5 years after getting involved with techno. I knew
Detroit techno had a rich history but didn't truly appreciate it until
reading Techno Rebels. The man may be gone but his legacy continues. RIP
I've had a look at a lot of the pics, and Dan had a good eye and nice
sense of composition... I used to be quite active in BW photography
before techno/radio snarfed up a lot of my time.
He will be missed. I plan to do (KFJC programming willing) a 4-hour
block of Detroit in his honor.

What a horrible read indeed.
Crossing fingers for him and hope the treatment he gets will work out

Wow. Horrible to hear and read this. Thanks for letting us know here. I see

When I first came to Detroit in '98, I'd been on 313 for a few years
but had hardly met any listmembers offline, not even in the
Netherlands. During that visit to Detroit, there were several people

I never had the opportunity to meet Dan in person, but I definitely
felt like I knew him through the community that is 313.

time (about as far away from Detroit as you could get) via 313, his

The extraordinary thing about Detroit techno is not just the music
but the people. I usually do a practice mix once or twice a week
and last night played Kano's I'm Ready in honor of Dan and
remembering some of the other extraordinary people who have passed --
Ken Collier, Laura Gavoor.
I shared this link earlier today on fb, but thought it was appropriate to share
here, since he was a friend to a lot of us on this list. There are some great
moments as seen through Dan's eyes:

I met Dan in early 2002 during our employee orientation at BBDO Detroit. They
did the whole go around the room and say your name thingy and when he said his
name, I immediately knew who he was. We spoke a moment then, but I felt kinda
awkward 'cause I didn't want to be known as just some techno
I am also without words after this news, i think most of us who know Dan are
all feeling the same. Also, it says something about our beloved techno scene
that when not a famous DJ or an artists but someone who loves the music needs
our help, we help.
I just noticed that the fund raiser has
A Hard Black Evening party in Kalamazoo. I had dinner with him, Jay
Denham, Claude Young, Surgeon, and a bunch of others...I remember it
being pointed out that he was there...was pleased to meet him. So
very sad that he is ill. However, he has done one thing that most
cannot say that they have:
is very, very ill.
We all know how much Dan means to our community.
Please ... if you can.

It's a sign of how much he means when a bunch of Technotourists many
timezones away, who would see Dan maybe once a year, are looking at
their monitors stunned, shocked and saddened, as if this were
