I can definitely see the dangers in excessive volume at clubs. I've
been to shows where my hearing has been considerably comprimised for
several days afterwards. On the other hand, some of the best shows I've
been to have been almost excuciatingly loud and I would not have had
them any other
They're a bit pricey, but a good pair of custom earplugs with a flat
frequency response is probably the best gear investment you can make
if you spend a lot of time around amplified music.
I bought a pair when I was a gigging drummer and use them now for
electronic shows. I wouldn't dream of

Good, it's about time.
I've been to too many clubs where I've had to leave because I was
literally in pain from the sound levels (a particularly dynamite Dave
Clarke set was once ruined by this. To be fair I think the staff did keep
turning it down but slowly but surely the volume levels crept
I swear, though I have no real scientific evidence or anything other
than my word to give you, that you can understand people better in a
loud concert (110-120db) when you DO have earplugs in, AND it
significantly increases the fidelity of the sound.

Perhaps I'm just using rubbish ones?
I have generic 3M 'orange' ones. Not more expensive fitted or special
purpose plugs.
I might have to branch out :)

I 2nd this thought. I have a pair or ear plugs that are given to
the GM employes and the ear plugs cut out the hi-end frequencies that
are harmful to the ear, 12-16k range. I like them as it does make
talking to people a lot easer in a loud environment.

I find it much easier to hear people with ear plugs in when in a club. The
main trouble I find is talking to people, as they make my own voice sound funny
and quite boomy to myself. I end up talking too quietly and people are always
telling me to speak up!
I also get loads of people asking

Alex,
That should work pretty well as long as they don't like the music and move
around very much... ;)
If you ever come to Detroit, you can go The Works and test this theory
out.

I have to wear plugs at shows, and most of the weekend of the Detroit
festival, because I've worked at and attended so many shows that I get
tinnitus. I still have most of my hearing, but I've lost most of it
above 14,000 hz.
It would be great if everyone invested in custom-fitted musician's
