There is an AIX 5.1 64 bit mode tcpip bug you will want the fix for. It causes slow TSM backups. It is currently available as an efix but is suppose to be officially released next week. The apar number is IY36925. It goes on top of Aix 5.1 ML03. The work around is to run AIX is 32 bit mode.

A backup is considered LAN-FREE when the data does not pass through the LAN. If data comes from internal SCSI disks and goes through the HBA straght to the tapes, then no data was transmitted on the network. For server-free backups, then you need data on the SAN backed up to tapes on the SAN.
