Re: [Evergreen-general] Evergreen Booking Module

2024-04-23 Thread Jennifer Pringle via Evergreen-general
Hello Beth,

The Student Success Interest Group is starting back up (next meeting is at
2:00pm ET on Thursday April 25th during the Hackfest). The booking module is
on the list as one of the potential topics for Thursday and going forward so
may be a good place for a discussion and to find out who is currently using
booking.

Hello everyone,

NOBLE is not currently using Evergreen's Booking module, though we have had a
couple of libraries use it in the past on a limited basis. Another one of
libraries is interested in implementing this module, so we are looking at it
again. If your library/consortium is using this module, I would be interested
in hearing about your experience with it.

Thank you in advance!

Jennifer,

I've been encountering the same things with the filters in Circulation Policies
on 3.11!

We did find that if we click "Next" a few times and then apply the filters,
they work (especially relating to your #5), for whatever reason, but it's quite
annoying.

Best,
Debbie

I haven’t been able to figure out if I’m running into a bug or if this
something unique to us. The concerto dataset only has 1 circulation policy so
it’s not easy to try and replicate (we have hundreds of circulation policies).
We had a few issues when we were on 3.9 and before with things not always
saving on the first try (such as https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2038846) but
we’re running into more issues since we upgraded to 3.11.1.

What we’ve seen so far:

  1. If you filter by Org Unit you cannot go back and add an additional filter
for Circulation Modifier. The field in which you would enter the modifier is
grayed out.
  2. If you change a value for one of your filters and click Apply the change
isn't applied.
  3. If you add additional filters after your initial filtering the change
isn’t applied. You have to reload the interface and start again.
  4. If you do too much filtering you can no longer save circ policies until
you refresh/reload the interface.
  5. Circulation policies aren’t displaying reliably. For one of our
libraries it showed 8 active policies in the interface, 9 active policies on
the report I ran, and then after I added two new policies the interface showed
me all 11 active policies.

Thanks,

Jennifer

Re: [Evergreen-general] LP 1948991: Administration Options - Mismatch with headers

2024-01-17 Thread Jennifer Pringle via Evergreen-general
I actually think we should use the names from the menus rather than the current
headings on the pages. It sounds like it will be more work but, at least for
us, those are the names library staff know the interfaces by and in most cases
the names the interfaces have had for years. Changing them to match the
headings will also change the order of the menu and in come cases split up
interfaces that are currently nicely grouped together. (and will add the
word Configuration to almost every menu item on the Server Admin menu)

For example:

Circulation Duration Rules -> Circulation Duration Rule Configuration
Circulation Limit Groups -> Circulation Limit Group Configuration
Circulation Matchpoint Weights -> Circ Matrix Weights Configuration
Circulation Max Fine Rules -> Max Fine Rule Configuration
Circulation Modifiers -> Circulation Modifier Configuration
Circulation Recurring Fine Rules -> Recurring Fine Rule Configuration

I'd vote for changing the links, as at least some of the UI titles are
coming from the IDL, which means they may also get re-used with
reporting. That also makes for fewer files to touch, overall. We
shouldn't forget that we can also completely relabel things if the
programmer-ese is too prominent.

[Evergreen-general] Staff Training Roundtable

2023-09-19 Thread Jennifer Pringle via Evergreen-general
Hi everyone,

Is there any interest from people who train library staff on Evergreen to get
together to talk specifically about training?

I don't think we need an official interest group but I think it would be useful
to talk about what training people are doing, what's working, what isn't
working, what resources people are create for their libraries, what software is
being use to create resources, etc.

If there is interest I'd be happy to coordinate something for 2024.

Re: [Evergreen-general] Staff training

2023-09-19 Thread Jennifer Pringle via Evergreen-general
Hi Millissa,

I agree with everything that’s already been said.

Our libraries use a combination of age hold protection and specific circulation
modifiers to restrict items as needed from being part of reciprocal borrowing.
I think it helps libraries to know that they can keep parts of their collection
from being included (especially around library of things collections).

We’ve found having documented policies helps both the libraries and us. (We
have three different reciprocal borrowing zones which each operate a little
differently so the policies help us keep track of how each should work.) One of
our zones does patron driven ILL and the other two do staff driven.
http://docs.libraries.coop/policy/_bc_inter_library_connect_policies.html
http://docs.libraries.coop/policy/_spruce_inter_library_connect.html

One thing to highlight is the potential reduction in staff time. For us,
overall interlibrary loans done through Evergreen take less time than when
staff do part in Evergreen and part in a 3rd party ILL system. Also, Evergreen
tells staff exactly what to do (pull this item from the shelf, send the item
here, etc.).

I have a webinar on ILL through Evergreen which I pull out and do for our
libraries every couple of years. I’m happy to share my script if you’re
interested.

Libraries can also enable settings that bring items home when their patrons
place holds, overriding the holds queue.

Some people are more nervous about change than others. That's o.k. But the
benefits of resource sharing are fantastic. My consortium shares over four

We have found exactly the same thing that Terran describes. Oftentimes, we’ve
had larger, more well-funded libraries indicate that they’re afraid the smaller
libraries will “clear their shelves” of new materials. In reality, we’ve found
that the smaller libraries contribute a ton because they have retained items
that are often weeded at the larger libraries, filling out series and providing
access to items that are out of publication. Age protection is the thing that
seems to alleviate the fear. We have found that three month age protection
generally works best except for those few outliers (think Harry Potter,
Twilight, Spare…).

Re: [Evergreen-general] Course Materials Module

2023-03-09 Thread Jennifer Pringle via Evergreen-general
Hello Courtney,

We started implementing the course reserves module when we upgraded to 3.9 over
the summer. Not all of our libraries using course reserves have switched over
yet.

We have documentation (based on the official community docs) as well as videos
demonstrating how to set up the module.

Course Reserves - http://docs.libraries.coop/sitka/_course_reserves.html
Course Reserves in the Public Catalogue -
http://docs.libraries.coop/sitka/public-catalogue-course-reserves.html
Course Reserves Videos -
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLdwlgwBNnH4qOaDBhP1SnETdwJaKAgssf

The two biggest issues we currently have are:
Browse for courses not working in the public catalogue -
https://bugs.launchpad.net/evergreen/+bug/1913815 (we are currently working
around this by hiding the browse option entirely in the public catalogue)
Not possible to un-archive courses -
https://bugs.launchpad.net/evergreen/+bug/1895706 (which is fixed in 3.10, so
should be resolved for us with our next upgrade)

Hope this helps,

Re: [Evergreen-general] Search the Catalog (Traditional)

2023-01-25 Thread Jennifer Pringle via Evergreen-general
Hi Beth,

The developers voted at their May 2022 meeting to officially deprecate the
traditional catalogue and TPAC as of 3.10
(http://evergreen-ils.org/meetings/evergreen/2022/evergreen.2022-05-10-15.00.html)
I believe this means that both will still work in 3.10 but that they are no
longer supported by the community and bugs in those features will not be fixed.
As far I can see there is no date yet for them to be completely removed.

As of 3.10 there is a library setting to hide the Traditional catalogue.

We moved to the new staff catalogue for 3.7 (and hid the menu option) and then
moved to bootstrap for 3.9.
Once you switch to the bootstrap OPAC that’s what shows in the staff client
when you go to the traditional catalogue menu option. So, if you’re not ready
to lose the traditional staff catalogue yet you’ll want to hold of moving to
bootstrap until you are.

Hope this helps,

Jennifer

Can anyone tell me when the traditional search view option goes away in the

wondering when I need to get the bootstrap OPAC customized. We are currently on

Re: [Evergreen-general] How do you handle placing temporary ILL items on hold?

2023-01-03 Thread Jennifer Pringle via Evergreen-general

Hi Benjamin,

For our libraries that want to be able to use Evergreen's automated
notifications for ILLs we recommend they use a set of brief records
with placeholder items that they rotate through (and keep in an item
bucket). (Libraries that don't want to use the automated
notifications manually notify the patrons and then check the items out
as pre-cats when the patron comes in.)

We've come up with record requirements to make it easy for libraries
to identify when a bib record is a brief ILL record and what library
created it.

http://docs.libraries.coop/policy/_using_brief_marc_records_for_incoming_ill.html

The one issue we haven't found an easy solution for is fines. If
libraries are entering the actual title of the item into the record
and then the patron gets fines the title will change in the billing
record if used for a future ILL. Our current workarounds are to
either use a generic title for all the record "Interlibrary Loan" or
for staff to track ILL check ins and create manual bills where needed
to replace the automatic ones. (However a lot of our libraries are now
fine free which eliminates this issue for them.)

Hope this helps,

Jennifer

Quoting "Murphy, Benjamin via Evergreen-general"

We're looking for suggestions on how to efficiently place ILL items
on hold for patrons that have requested them. (Items that aren't in
Evergreen and won't need to be there long term.)

Current behavior we're getting is that the ILL item comes in, the
staff add it as a pre-cat item, goes to the Item Status screen,
scans it and places an item hold for the item for the patron. When
the item is then checked in to capture the hold it says "send to
cataloging" because its been added as a pre-cat item. That adds a
level of complexity that we're hoping to avoid.

Our goal is to have a scenario where the ILL item can be efficiently
placed on hold for the patron and then the ILL item can be removed
once it has been circulated. Do any of you have a process you use?
Do you have a bib record specifically for ILL items that you add
items to? Do you have some other method that allows for the patron
to be notified of the available hold and when it is due?

Re: [Evergreen-general] Printing Line Item Worksheet after recent Chrome Updates

2022-12-13 Thread Jennifer Pringle via Evergreen-general

Hi Courtney,

I can replicate what you're seeing on our system running 3.9.0+(we've
got a bunch of backported fixes). I can replicate it in both Chrome
and Firefox so I suspect it's an issue with Evergreen not the browser.
I recommend reporting this as a bug to Launchpad.

I suspect this issue will be resolved in 3.10 with the PO/line item
port to angular but definitely something that should be tested as 3.10
test servers come available.

Hope this helps,

Has anyone experienced issues with line-item worksheets printing on

recently received the following inquiry from a system within the
Cardinal consortium and wanted to see if anyone else has run into
these issues. We are currently using Evergreen 3-9-1 . Any feedback
is greatly appreciated.

"After the recent Chrome update, line-item worksheets accessed from
the Acquisitions Search page in Evergreen are printing with the
worksheet on one page and the buttons at the top (Open in New Window
and Refresh) on a separate page. They weren't printing separately
before the update. I have printing preferences set to ignore blank
pages, but the page with the buttons prints in addition to the
worksheet.

If I click "Open in New Window," the buttons do not appear, and I
can print the page like I did prior to the Chrome update. (This
would be an extra step in a workflow where I'm printing hundreds of
worksheets a week, so I'd like to avoid this step.)

When opened from Acquisitions Search, my normal workflow, the
worksheet's link is
https://henderson.nccardinal.org/eg/staff/acq/legacy/lineitem/worksheet/869208. The link for the worksheet opened with "Open in New Window" is

Re: [Evergreen-general] Questions About Customizing the New Print Templates

2022-11-03 Thread Jennifer Pringle via Evergreen-general

Hi Terran,

This is our first library to get a custom pull list template and we
just set it up for them yesterday so we haven't run into issues with
multiple versions of the template yet. This library is one that uses
their receipt printer for the pull list so the default template wasn't
working for them.

Looking ahead to the circ receipts moving to this editor with the new
angular circ I agree that we're going to need a way to allow
workstation-level customizations. We currently haven't given
permissions for libraries to edit their own templates in the new Print
Templates but we're anticipating that we'll need to do that ahead of
our next upgrade in 2023.

issues where different workstations in the same branch need to print the
same receipt in different ways, which doesn't appear to be an option at all

The first is an offset plus number of digits, the second is the

Re: [Evergreen-general] Link Checker

2022-10-28 Thread Jennifer Pringle via Evergreen-general

Hello Elizabeth,

I have no tips or best practices with the Link Checker to offer but
I'd be very interested if you'd be willing to share what you learn.

We looked at the link checker in 2019 (I think on EG 3.3) and found it
wasn't scoping the results for us. So if we did a search at LIBRARY A
we'd get Overdrive URLS listed for all 50+ libraries that have 856s on
our Overdrive records which made it pretty unusable for us. (I tried
to run a test just now in 3.9 to confirm what we saw but I'm getting
errors so not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if there's a new
bug.)

I thought we'd reported the results scoping issue as a bug but I'm not
seeing it so I think we moved onto the next thing in our upgrade
testing intending to come back to the link checker and never did.

I did find a bug for the angularization of the link checker that King
County and Equinox are doing:

While I'm not sure if there is some mechanism in the serials module that
makes things different (we don't use it), we utilize monograph parts BIG
TIME in our consortium. It gets the job done re: holds, but it's rough
making sure everything has parts because if ONE holding has parts, it
really only works (okay, it works best) if then every holding on that
record has parts.

on how they work? (This is the Circulation Limit Groups found under
Server Administration, not the Circulation Limit Sets found under
Local Administration.)

I've looked at both the dojo and angularjs interfaces for Circulation
Limit Groups in 3.7 and 3.9. I can create a group with a name and
description which I can then use in the Circulation Limit Sets but I'm
assuming there's a piece missing where I need to tell Evergreen what
the group should actually limit.

The most I could find in the docs was:

https://docs.evergreen-ils.org/eg/docs/latest/admin_initial_setup/borrowing_items.html#_circulation_limit_sets
https://docs.evergreen-ils.org/eg/docs/latest/admin/circulation_limit_groups.html

Thanks,

Jennifer

Re: [Evergreen-general] Pre-Cat management

2022-05-19 Thread Jennifer Pringle via Evergreen-general
We currently leave it up to our libraries to delete pre-cats (though I
know it is possible to identify and delete them in batch in the
database if you have access).

For our ILLs we recommend that libraries re-use the same barcodes over
and over again to lower the number of pre-cats that get created/need
to be deleted.

I know of at least four systems that supply Evergreen holdings to

Hi Blake,

In theory you could load the e-records through acquisitions and
activate the PO without loading the items. That way the records would
be linked to the acquisitions module (though the find originating
acquisitions feature relies on items so you could find the link if you
started in the acq module, but not if you started with the bib record).

All,

Please excuse my ignorance. Any and all feedback is welcome.

Is anyone using Evergreen for ERM somehow? Can Acq accommodate? I
could see a scenario where a library could record the money spent by
recording invoices. And debiting the appropriate funds. But that
wouldn't tie back to a bib record. Because, correct me if I'm wrong,
you'd need to get items on your invoice for Evergreen to make the
connection to the bib?

Knowing that, perhaps we can still make it happen with two steps:
using Acq for invoice tracking. And crafting/curating the MARC to
save the fund code in a special place. Loading the bibs using
standard methods.

What are you doing? Coral? Something else?

Re: [Evergreen-general] Using CSV file to add to Record bucket

2022-02-23 Thread Jennifer Pringle via Evergreen-general

Hi Francene,

Unfortunately it's not currently possible to load a file of record IDs
or TCNs into a Record Bucket.

This has been submitted to Launchpad as a wishlist -
https://bugs.launchpad.net/evergreen/+bug/1784412

However, you may be able to copy a queue to a bucket as a workaround.

Go to Cataloguing -> MARC Batch Import/Export
Click on Inspect Queue
Double click on the queue you want to copy
In the queue there is a box listing Queue Actions, one of which is
Copy Queue to Bucket. This lets you copy the queue to a new or
existing record bucket.

From there you should be able to select the ones you want to delete.

Whether this will work for you as a workaround will depend on whether
you're running a version of Evergreen that has this feature (I'm not
sure when this feature was added but we have it in 3.7.) and whether
you have the queues from the original record imports (and whether
going through them to find the records to be deleted saves you any
time).

Hope this helps,

Jennifer

I can't use the Item Status screen since that uses barcodes as the

I ran into this recently using Chrome. Your computer 2 is likely

Hello

I have a weird difference in workflows between two computers when
creating a new MARC record. Both computers are using the same

Computer 1:

  1. Selects MARC template
  2. Updates MARC Fields
  3. Checks Add Items box
  4. Enters barocde and call number information
  5. Clicks Save
  6. Gets taken to the Holidings Editor Screen

Computer 2:

  1. Selects MARC template
  2. Updates MARC Fields
  3. Checks Add Items box
  4. Enters barocde and call number information
  5. Clicks Save
  6. Gets taken to the Catalog screen
  7. Then has to click Add Holdings to get taken to Holdings Editor Screen

The only difference I can figure is that Computer 1 is used prior to
our upgrade to 3.7 and Computer 2 was installed after the upgrade.
Both use Hatch so I’m wondering if it’s something tied to Stored
Prefences. Has anyone seen anything like this or know of a bug
that I missed?

Re: [Evergreen-general] Lost Items - Window of Opportunity?

2022-02-11 Thread Jennifer Pringle via Evergreen-general

Hello Dana,

I think you want to take a look at the following library settings
which may help with the replacement cost must be paid part.

"Void lost max interval" - items lost longer than the value entered
for this setting don't have the billing voided on return
So if you set this to 30 days the bills will not be removed from the
patron's account if the item is eventually returned

"Prohibit negative balance on bills for lost materials" - when set to
true Evergreen won't allow you to have a negative balance related to a
lost item
Negative Balance Interval for Lost - when used in conjunction with the
above setting it implements an interval after which no negative
balances related to lost are allowed

I think the difference between "Void lost max interval" and the
negative balance settings is that the "Void lost max interval" only
applies to check-ins whereas the negative balance settings apply to
manual refunds through the billing interface as well. Someone who is
more familiar with these settings might be able to correct me or
provide a better explanation.

I don't think there's currently a way in Evergreen to specify that
lost items should behave differently at check in based on when the
item is returned. I can see it being a potentially useful feature for
Evergreen to block the check in of a lost item if it's passed the
point of the library issuing refunds, or give the staff member some
indication of this rather than just the generic lost item being
returned message. I know some libraries that require the patron to
pay for the item at that point, as they've often already replaced it,
and the original item is then deleted from the system and given to the
patron.

Hope this helps,

Jennifer

Quoting Dana Schwarz via Evergreen-general
:

Hello,

We are trying to set a time limit in the amount of days a patron has
to return an item after it is marked as "Lost". That way even though
the item is lost they still have a window of opportunity to return
the item and not pay a fine. But if they do not return after those
30 days they have no other option than to pay the replacement cost.
For example, 30 days after an item is marked lost we would have it
set in Evergreen that it cannot be used after checkin and the
replacement cost must be paid.
I see that in the library settings you can mark it as true or false
whether an item is valid after checkin. However, for us we would
like a time limit added.
Is this something that we add to the Library Settings Editor or in
the Notifications/Action Triggers? I have a feeling it's the latter
but what should I put in for the hook, reactor and validator?

I hope that makes sense. Many thanks for all your help!

Re: [Evergreen-general] patron permission groups

2022-01-31 Thread Jennifer Pringle via Evergreen-general

Hello Diane,

Yes, you should be able to customize what permission groups show up in
the Main Permission Profile Group drop down in the patron record using
the Permission Tree Display Entries feature (Administration -> Local
Administration -> Permission Tree Display Entries)

I couldn't find docs on this in the current documentation but the ones
from 3.2 look the same as what we see in 3.7 -
https://docs.evergreen-ils.org/3.2/_client_2.html

Permission groups that can't be seen can't be granted to users so
you'll want to think about what staff permission groups should show to
library staff with the patron groups.

This feature only affects the drop down in the patron record. The
patron search still uses the whole list -

Jennifer

Quoting Josh Stompro via Evergreen-general

Hello, We currently don't make much use of shelving locations in our
systems because we don't standardize them at all our locations. So one
branch will have a separate shelf for Westerns while another will shelve
all adult fiction together. One site will shelve all the Juvenile Fiction
and J Graphic novels together, and the next site will have separate shelves
for them.

But I'm intrigued by the possibility of having pull lists and other reports
sorted by the shelving locations for each site using the Shelving Location
Order feature.

We also float everything between our branches within the same system.
Floating doesn't try to adjust the shelving location when an item moves
from one location to another.

So I'm just wondering if anyone has figured out a solution to floating
between locations that don't have the same shelving locations?

My thoughts so far are along the lines of a nightly script that tries to
translate between each sites shelving locations. Setup every possible
shelving location for every site across the region, and then move items
from one to another depending on a specific sites preferences.

Maybe a DB trigger based on the asset.copy(circ_lib) changing? But I'm not
sure that would result in checkin after a float showing the correct
shelving location for the new branch.

Thanks
Josh

address field of the tab in which Evergreen is open and logged into;
however, this fails to work in both Vivaldi and Firefox.

So far, I don't see anything in browser settings that might affect this

This occurs with other Evergreen accounts as well. We're on v3.6.5.

Re: [Evergreen-general] Documentation on Angular Staff Search Interface

2021-10-06 Thread Jennifer Pringle via Evergreen-general

Hi Benjamin,

We have some documentation and videos that look at the new staff
catalogue that might be helpful but they're for 3.7. We jumped from
3.5 to 3.7 so I'm not sure how many differences there are in the new
staff catalogue between 3.6 and 3.7.

Before I recreate the wheel, does anyone have any staff targeted
documentation or training (that you'd be willing to share) that
covers the changes to the staff search interface that was rolled out
in 3.6 (what used to be called the Experimental Staff Catalog)?

[Evergreen-general] Translations for Bootstrap

2021-09-21 Thread Jennifer Pringle via Evergreen-general

Hello,

I'm working on translating bootstrap into French via the Launchpad
translations and I've come across several strings that include a
significant amount of code in them and I'm not sure if this is
expected or a bug. For example:

 class='sumNum'>%1Items Checked Out

Located in ../../Open-ILS/src/templates-bootstrap/opac/parts/myopac/base.tt2:3
(https://translations.launchpad.net/evergreen/master/+pots/bootstrap-opac/fr/46/+translate)

 class='sumNum'>%1Holds / %2 Ready

Located in ../../Open-ILS/src/templates-bootstrap/opac/parts/myopac/base.tt2:3
(https://translations.launchpad.net/evergreen/master/+pots/bootstrap-opac/fr/48/+translate)

Can anyone confirm whether or not it's expected that this code is
included in the strings for translation?

Thanks,

Jennifer

Re: [Evergreen-general] High Level Hold Has No Copy

2021-08-31 Thread Jennifer Pringle via Evergreen-general

Hello Diane,

We've encountered the *High Level Hold Has No Copy* message in 3.7 and
we don't use parts. It's shown up for us when there are no holdable
items on the record that can fill the hold.

Good morning -

Will we only see this message *High Level Hold Has No Copy* when a part
hold needs to be placed rather than a title hold? Can it ever mean
something else?

We seriously miss the message *Choose Part *(lost when we upgraded from 3.3
to 3.6). No one was confused by the meaning of that message.

Thank you.

Re: [Evergreen-general] Setting Up a New Classification Scheme

2021-06-10 Thread Jennifer Pringle via Evergreen-general

Thanks Jason, this is super helpful!

Quoting Jason Boyer :

Hi Jennifer, there isn’t an interface to manage this yet and while
the Angular client’s auto-grid feature will allow you to see the
table, you’re not able to add or edit any entries. One reason
there’s no interface for it is that one of the required fields is
the name of a database procedure to perform the necessary
normalization for sorting.

These are the steps you’d need to take to add a new classification
scheme today:

Look at the existing call number classification normalization
functions to see if one of them is applicable to the new scheme:
asset.label_normalizer_generic, asset.label_normalizer_dewey, and
asset.label_normalizer_lc. If none of these normalizers will work
for the new scheme a new normalizing function will need to be
written. (We’ll assume you have to put together an
asset.label_normalizer_nlm for now)

Insert a new row into asset.call_number_class:
name | normalizer | field
National Library of Medicine | asset.label_normalizer_nlm |
060ab,(other fields / subfields)

Then the opensrf.settings service (at least?) may need to be
restarted. I’m not entirely certain about the extent of that.

And then it’s time to test because I’ve not actually done this
myself but I don’t believe classification schemes are hard-coded
anywhere. :)
