Turn off devfs. You probably have a failed link at /dev/snd. or perhaps an unused link at /dev/snd/dev . There is supposed to be a link from /dev/snd to /proce/asound/dev, but it never seems to go right with devfs running. To turn it off, go into your /etc/lilo.conf and change devfs=mount to de

In addition to Tim's suggestion, you should try using the 0.9.0beta12 version of alsa. From your original message it looks like you are using an 0.5.x version. The alsa version number isn't directly related to the issue your seeing right now, but, 0.5.x is old and shouldn't be used anymore. -ERic
