Just... no midi in.
Do you see something when you run cat

Does alsa support more then 4 sound cards,
or can I created device file for a 5th
sound cards. I'm sure this isn't a big
issue as it is probably very rare for anyone
to actually use five sound cards,

Yes, the current limit is 8.

You can, but the snddevices script creates device files for 4 cards by
default. To change this, you have to edit a variable somewhere in the

Hi all,
i've got some problem with my maudio quattro. i'm using the .asoundrc
file from alsa-project.org to use all 4 channels. (file is attached)
it worked fine with alsa up to 0.9.2.
but with all newer versions i can't access the sound interface...
i'm using pd with the -alsadev quattro flag.

First, how do you technically refer to an onboard sound card? Is it a card?
Also, there is no supported driver for what I have with ALSA. How do I
ignore the onboard card when I install a new one?
Thanks,

This is pretty much identical to /dev/snd/midiC0D0.
There should be a midi01 file for your second card. (?)
Yeah, it doesn't look like the snd-mpu401 driver

Not a thing - midiC1D0 is the only device that exists when I do a cat
/dev/snd/ and I see nothing when I pound some keys on my MIDI
controller.
Are there any messages in

Oh! You may have somthing here... doing ls /proc/bus gives me only
two directories: pccard and pci, no usb.
Robert Liguori wrote:

Not really, but ALSA uses the term card to refer to those, er,
things for historical reasons, regardless of the type (real card/
onboard/USB/PCMCIA/virtual (like snd-virmidi or snd-dummy)).
Also,

Hi, I am new to ALSA and read in the INSTALL file that it is necessary that I resolve
all symbol dependencies between the used kernel and ALSA driver code.
My question is, how do I do this in plain ENGLISH?
I had tried installing the driver by ignoring this part and I get the following

I've been recently comparing sound quality between the ALSA emu10k1

the bass only results in extreme distortion and popping noises. I also
