This does seem to be the bizarrest feature of snd-hda-intel that I've seen too.
Every version has a differ
Hi there,
I have some problems with the snd-hda-intel driver. The mixer controls
seem to be unpredictably appearing and disappearing from alsa-driver
version to version. In the current daily snapshot (12th Sept 2008) I
have no volume control at all. In the driver shipped with 2.6.25 kernel

That is really bizarre. Stuck in there it is no wonder that "install" did
not find it to erase it. While I can vaguely make up a defense

Ubuntu has a special snd-hda-intel module in
/lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/ubuntu/media/snd-hda-intel. This module
references are being mixed with the ones of the module you compiled.
If you look carefully in the error messages in dmesg, you can see the
confusion between the 2 modules.

Hello Bill, thanks for the help. Well, my mistake on rc :). I've
downloaded the .15 version again, and the install.sh was there, maybe
I had a problem unpacking last time.
So this time I've followed the instuctions, used the alsaconf from
alsa-utils to configure my card, it detected the hda-intel.

Hello there! I have an acer travelmate 3260 using Ubuntu 7.10. When I
first installed it, it did not recognized my sound chip, and I had to
get latest alsa (I believe I used 1.0.13 at the time) compiled it, and
after a few hours (I'm a complet dumb on linux, I just love it and use
it :) ) I got it

That is probably because, as I have discovered first-hand and also been told by
others with much more expertise, the hda-intel chip is a total peice of shit.
I solved my hda-intel problems by blowing off the hda-intel entirely, and
getting a firewir
