The ADSL2 Line MIB contains the upstream and downstream information
that is "current" within an ADSL2+ modem. A similar table is present
in the original ADSL line MIB as well (Full-rate DMT modems for
example).
Devices in the home could query the MIB objects to obtain upstream and

Clearly, a third party querying an ISP for provisioned link speed
associated with any IP address has tremendous privacy concerns.
However, what I am thinking is that an ISP managed ALTO server (at the
edge router) disseminates this information only to a DSL/cable modem when
the modem attempts

Salman,
I don't remember if the WG ever decided whether the 'provisioned link

When a home customer purchases a [high speed] Internet plan from an ISP,
the ISP typically promises a certain upload/download link capacity for the
plan.
In the old days of dialup, a device using a modem established a
point-to-point connection with the ISP and knew the link capacity which

You are entirely correct that the goal of this document is to lay out
the problem and not the solution. Moreover, it is unfortunate, yet
true, that one may interpret any pictorial representation of an
instantiation of ALTO services as a preferred method of deploying ALTO.
