What is inside /tmp/amanda/sendbackup* or /tmp/amanda/sendsize* about
the disk?
Olivier
For things that you want to keep accessed by certain uids, you can change
the group and make it group readable.
That's what I had to do to get AMANDA to be able to read my raw devices
(partitions) for backing up.
You can just create a user called 'amanda' and a group called 'backup'.
Make 'bac

You want the amanda-242-tapeio branch from CVS. That generalizes the
Amanda tape I/O subsystem and one of the "drivers" is called "file",
which writes to a set of disk files to emulate a tape. You co

If you use the system dump program (e.g. "dump" or "vxdump" or whatever
your vendor calls it), that reads from the raw d

You're not the only one :-). It's pretty confusing.
I posted an overview of how Amanda uses ports to amanda-hackers last
week. You might look in the archives for Subject "Use of UDP/TCP ports
in Amanda".

I'm currently trying to get Amanda running on my Compaq Tru 64 UNIX system
and seem to be having a problem with user permissions. I understand that a
typical AMANDA configuration uses a user other than root, however I haven't
found much information (maybe I'm not looking in the right place) about
Hi
I can't understood about portrange. If I choose an port < 1024, I have
set user=root, and I don't want this. But if I choose an port > 1024,
amdump complains 'port not secure'!!! So, I must set user=root??? What
can I do?

That's not what that message means.
Amanda does not use gtar to write to tape. It runs gtar on the client

Hello Everyone!
I have had good success in finishing the compile of Amanda and now have it
installed. I am however getting an error from amdump concerning gtar. Here

This says the client side (or your firewall) closed the connection while
dumper (on the tape machine) was trying to read the image.

It's not necessarily hanging on a particular file. It could be that

Two questions about this part of the file. First, was the line really
split like above, or is that just an artifact of you getting the data
into the E-mail?
Second, I realize (or assume) you changed the da
I would like to install AMANDA into --prefix=/usr/local/amanda, but after

Hi Everybody:
Again I have problems with another filesystem is not too big but the machine is slow and it is outside the firewall. I had this problem before and I increased the firewall idle to 60 minutes and I used as dumptype "comp-server" (compression fast but on the tape server)and it worked

John,
For all three clients amcheck reported success.
For Bali, I removed bali.ph.albany.edu from the tables, it seems
that was interfering with bali.wadsworth.org which I don't really
understand as my /etc/resolv.conf is correct and bali was defined
correctly in both DNS and NIS tables.
