Thanks to anyone who replied.
I got things clearer now.
I have now modified my cron job to run amanda just once a week and set
dumpcycle to 0. That way I will always get a full backup per week.
As soon as i finish saving data from the archival tapes I will get
them back to the tapecycle.

there to just process a current dump.. allowing you to
decide exactly when dumps should occur, not allowing the planer to try and
figure it out for you.
