That is a very deserving recognition of Buljit's efforts. Thanks for sharing.

The problem is not really one of production of civil engineers. The system
produces enough of them. It is just that these people choose to enter the IT
related sectors rather than work as civil engineers because the perceived wages
are significantly lower for the latter. Of course, government
If it is really a free market, the demand should improve the civil engineer
salaries and get things rolling again. Why hasn't construction in the private
sector sensed this? I can understand when engineers employed by the govt. are
paid fixed salary lower than software engineers and PWD roads
The article doesn't mention rampant corruption, specially in civil engg. and
construction.
As long this exists, it will be very difficult for India to move forward
even if it gets the qualified people.

Good to hear from you Santanu. I was afraid we lost you, like so many others
that have come and gone :-). Hope to hear more from you.
Anyway, MY views are somewhat different. I posted the following comment to NY

PS--!
Few of the zillions of engineers, including civil, Indian universities churn
out, could not relate their academic knowledge ( which is as good as any in
the world) to actual field work, the project delivery process, if their lives
depended on it.

Hi Chandan-da:
Sorry for the long silence; but I wasn't gone, just lazy. I agree with you that
lack of civil engineers is not really the main constraint on the poor state of
infrastructure.
I was in Assam two weeks ago and the roads in my home town have all but
disappeared (the word pothole
I agree with all your points. In addition, I think that one way of removing
the vast subsidies that the whole of India provides to the few who get in to
the IITs would be this:
1. Recognize that the subsidy from the rest of the country stems from the
fact that the institution spends more
Excellent ideas, Amlan.

C'da,
Fairly good assessment. Nevertheless a couple of issues, which you brought
up may need some delibration:
Under the circumstances, it is not only FAIR, it is the RIGHT thing to
RECOGNIZE and give adequate consideration and weightage, in ADDITION to the
merit measured by test entrance

money as government does not give much. If the VC is forced to go

We the College Teachers alos keep saying that DU has became a Money Earning
machine. The ACTA , Tinsukia Zone raised the demand three years back. Latter
on ACTA central Committee also joined the chorus. But, I don't know the
reason , why present leadership is silent on the issue.
