I can recommend the Canton Plus Media 3. These are amplified bookshelf
speakers with auto on/off feature.
For their size they deliver a very good, balanced sound. Even bass is
quite good.
They sell at around EUR 200.

I'm not an electrical tech so ideally one would chime in, but there is a
fuse recommendation on the back of the PS (.5a IIRC). I just used an
inline fuse holder from RS, with a slo-blo fuse to avoid annoyance
tripping. It did cost more than the salvaged Power One though :-).
I'll be your first customer if you don't charge $1000 for your labor and
parts. :)

Technically fuses are there to protect the cable, not the electric item

Mea Culpa. Panasonic's web page about the XR55 didn't make this obvious.
Now that you've explained what sort of device the XR55 is, I agree that
using an external DAC with it makes no sense.
Of course, a PWM power amp is essentially a DAC that delivers a high
current output

It's obviously not just about the technology. I have no issues about the
potential quality of digital amps (although I can't seem to find
specific details about how it is implemented in the Pany). However, I
assume not everyone will prefer the sound of these digital amps, no
if they sound as good as they look i can stop searching. Many thanks!!.
cannot find a review however but tmepted to buy them 'blind'. Doubt if
anyone in Luxembourg has them to test.

Anyone out there with a spare psu? I ask here as many have bought

A vintage Carver would be very nice and right in the price range -- and
quite competitive with far more expensive audiophile amps.

Since What Hi-Fi always gives 5, or at the very least 4.5 stars, I
guess it doesn't say that much. On their scale I think the SB is worth
about 8 stars...
