picked up a $8 HOSA XLR->RCA cable today on the way home and hooked it
up right along side my $35 glass Toslink cable. I had my wife A/B it
with the DEQ input screen and I could tell a world of difference with

I have a modified DAC AH driven by the SB3 with a blue jeans coax cable.
It is a subtle improvement. I just like the sound of non-OS dacs. Sounds
a little smoother and more analog-like than the SB3 analog outs. It is
not a dramatic difference though...

I was going to suggest maybe replacing the speakers with a 2.1 system
like the Mirage Omni series of small, omnidirectional satellites,
coupled with a sub.
That would allow you a lot more flexibility in placement and even if
you didn't have strictly identical conditions for the L and R speakers,

We supply a modified SB in the UK.
We take a slightly different (more comprehensive) approach than the US
based companies and as a consequence our SB+ is more expensive.
However, once you take shipping to the UK/EU, duty, VAT etc into
account, the gap narrows somewhat.
