Mr Dudgeon
You are very happy to dish it out, but you just can't take it can you?
So why not take your own advice?

Out of curiosity, have you done a blind test between lossless and
good-quality lossy music? I'd've sworn that I could tell 192kbps MP3
from FLAC, but using the ABX Comparator in Foobar (with MP3s encoded
with LAME v2, which is about 190kbps), I was guessing.

Hi, first time posting here. I'm building a two channel for the living
room with a squeezebox as the only source. To keep it simple, I'm
considering a Bolder modded SB3 directly into a power amp (small Naim,
Bryston, etc) into a pair of small floorstanding speakers. Has anyone

Hey team,
I've been burning CDs from FLAC for use at work, and not all of them
seem to be working with a Rotel RCD-1072. I'm burning them with Nero at
the lowest speed possible (8x). Is there a better program I should be
using? What about using music cd-rs?
Any help would be greatly
They're are a lot of people who have this type of setup. I run my
SqueezeBox into a DAC and then directly into an amp. In order to
optimize this type of direct setup, you want to be able to keep the
digital volume control close to the max setting. This may mean you
will need some passive
Burrrn works perfectly for me: http://www.burrrn.net/

Hi guys,
I've just picked up a power supply, as Farnell UK is only about 10
minutes drive from me. But the PSU has detacthable tips, and says that
the correct polarity should be observed: Positive Inner or Negative
Inner.
Does anyone know which I should use? As budget as my AV equipment is,

I haven't been able to get a good sounding impulse response, too. I'm
using the Inguz Normal.drc file and sweeps. I did notice the following
warning message in the ImpulsePre.exe log file (attached) and coulnd't
work out what it meant. I have looked in the DRC documentation. Here's
the warning

First post here so if I am asking for something that has been covered at
length elsewhere please excuse.
I have what many would consider a high-end audio system. I bought a SB
recently and love the idea transferring my entire CD collection to the
computer. I am using EAC to get FLAC files and
I also use Burrrn to burn directly from Flac files to CD. It's an
awesome program, but all it really does is save you the trouble of
transcoding from Flac to WAV before burning the CD. While that's a
considerable labor savings, the CDs burned should turn out just the
same as using another
Another vote for Burrrn. I used Nero in the past, because the FLAC
installer conveniently added a .dll to make transcoding seamless. Nero
always seemed to have trouble with the gaps though, Burrrn OTOH works
perfectly with very few options for mucking up.
Experiment with different dye color
You're going to get as many different answers to your questions as there
are reponses.
One obvious question - have you tried the analogue outs of the SB into
your preamp? That would allow you to compare the DAC of the SB to the
DAC of your CD player, rather than the DAC of the preamp to the
Maybe something as simple as replacing the SB3 switching power supply
with a linear one would get the sound of the SB3 closer to that of your
high-end CD player. Many users have reported a noticeable improvement
by doing this, and it can be done for $50 - $150 depending on the
particular power
I have listened extensively to both a Squeezebox and a Transporter
through their analog outputs in my system, which qualifies as high-end
(detailed below.) Without question the Transporter sounds better than
the SB, in fact it is only a smidgeon less authoritative than my
reference Linn Sondek
Do you need a preamp? Nope, you don't need one.
You might want one though. Depends. I used to run without my BAT
VK-31SE until I heard Phil's system with and without the preamp. Now
you couldn't pry it from my cold dead fingers.
I'd say to start with, but your money in the speakers and

I have similar experiences to Jean in this area. Even for ripping and
playing some games I seem to wear out a dvd burner every 18 months or
so.
Fortunately they are quite cheap these days.
