I'm looking to upgrade my amp as well, because the ones I have available

basic low-to-mid end consumer grade that probably won't do justice to
the speakers. I'm willing to go second-hand on the amp as well,

I realize it's possible to do digital volume control that doesn't
introduce audible problems (loss of dynamic range, etc)
Your saying loss of dynamic range is an audible problems and moreover
quantify by etc... I don't know about that. Depends on the degree imho.

I think a few devices have implemented smart digital volume control

The Squeeze* products are among those (on 16bit source material).

Well, that's not too bad then. Does that

No I think its as good as it gets :)
Does that mean the output from the SPDIF is at 24 bit, too, when
using digital volume control?
I believe so, but according to the specs it can do both, 16 and 24. I
don't know what mechanisms

AFAIK output of the SB is ALWAYS 24-bit. Regardless of input. Same as
TACT gear - same approach to digital volume
I have the Channel Islands DAC and was wondering if the DAC-1 would be
an upgrade. It seems that it would be no better than an even swap.
Do you think any of new more expensive DAC's would come close to the
performance of a transporter?

That's good to know. I'm surprised it's not clear in any of the specs

I guess the only downside is that:

Good to know. Thanks.

open to active monitors or amp+passive speakers.

I can only guess that
The volume difference between the Duet analog output and your CD player
is related to the low analog output level of the Duet. The unbalanced
output level of a typical CD player is about 2.0 V rms. If you look at
the Duet specs you can see that the output is 4.2 Vpp (peak to peak).
Doing the math
Based on the previous 15 posts I think that a consensus is starting to
form. Other than the posts which address the volume issue, all the
other posts recommend using an external DAC. In addition not one post
says not to use an external DAC.
Now it's just a question of which DAC to get. I'll let
