I consider a set of STAX earspeakers, but have no experience with
electrostats. I plan to use my Touch as source. The STAX comes with a
vacuum tube driver unit. Can I connect the Touch directly to the driver
unit, or do I need a separate DAC and/or amplifier?

The energizer/amplifier that comes with the Stax package is all you
need, apart from some rca cables to connect them to the touch. The
4040's are superb headphones, I used to have them until I bought the
4070's and 007's not long ago Stax launched a limited edition
