Hmm - big thanks for looking into this and creating the 2 new files,

ran again! The EQ user interface seems to work normally but no EQ sound

Yes it really matters and Toslink (which I do use for certain things)
has its own issues, so as always one has to try both and see which
actually sounds best...

What about optical cables - is length significant and why? I hear glass

So, coax versus optical on the SB Touch - does anyone have any
comments?

I edited my post and dropped this recommendation, forget it. It isn't
necessary since the only change between the 30 and 32 versions is the

Thanks for that Phil.
I've been surfin' the net (probably a dangerous thing to do) about the
SB and notice various reviews and such like relating to better sounding
'modded' versions.. (there's even a highly modded SqueezeBox PLUS!); now
after all I am in the Audiophile section of the forum here

I think you will get much better sound **within your budget** if you
stick to headphones..

There's not much you can do within that budget, certainly not in the
Audiophiles forum. One option would be to forget about the T-amp for
now, and instead combine those funds with the speaker budget to buy a
pair of self-powered speakers such as the Audioengine 2 (A2, see

I purchased a SB (Duet) a couple of years ago and it's now sitting in

I'm probably not understanding something here, but if you want to avoid
the wireless on the SB Receiver why not just configure it to use the
ethernet port instead?

Thanks guys. I take your point on wifi not being different to wired,
but the sound at least appears different in blind tests of me and
subjects. I do however think that the weak link in my system is my DAC,
which is no fault of the DAC as it's proportionally cheap vis a vis the
other components.
There are various NAS (network attached storage) devices that can run
SBS. Check in the 3rd Party Hardware forum. Or you could look at a
low-cost, low-energy server, such as a SheevaPlug or a small dedicated
server. Either would be more likely to give you more oomph for your
buck than a NAS.

Thanks for the replies.
The audioengine A5 seems really interesting, though it does defeat my
purpose of getting speakers now which later can be turned into my
surround system.
I'm gonna look more into some good 2nd hand deals of older, but still
good speakers.
