After 18 years, I think it's finally time to lay my old amp to rest.
It's an Arcam Delta 290, paired with a 290P, bi-amping Mission 751

When it sounds good, I still love it; unfortunately, the selector knob

Have you considered Active Speakers / Monitors ( and possibly an active
subwoofer) for a 2.1 system. Something like

Are any of their dealers (http://avihifi.co.uk/contact.html ) near
enough to you for a demo? Or contact the manufacturers
I've had an SBooster delivered today on a sale or return basis, plugged
it in between the stock SMPS and Touch, and it's not going to be
returned.

There is no element of personal attack in my response.
Thanks for the suggestions so far...

It's worth noting that when transistor amps get to ~20-25 years old they
should be thoroughly serviced and probably partially rebuilt (caps and
rectifiers in particular should be looked at).
Both have been serviced, a few years
I was going to suggest that you try a tube amp, but I don't know what's
a good buy in the UK. Otherwise I'd suggest trying a Rogue Atlas.
Still, the price seems reasonable considering the importers take and
VAT, £1389.37 from Stone Audio vs. $1,595 from Rogue.

I don't think balanced will make a huge difference unless you are
running dozens of meters between the pre and amp.
More likely the quality of the goods will make a difference. Bryston
and believe it or not Crown beware the multiple quality varieties.

You seem to have little to offer but sniping.
Shrug. I'm quite aware of the technical faults of tubes. And I've
had several SS amps at various price levels: a Bryston

Obviously, 'reasonable' is a relative term!

The OP mentioned a price range of £2500 (that's nearly $4000).
And, yeah, it's definitely relative. There are 'philes who look down
their noses at such budget gear.

But, do tubes add that subtle tint of 'blackberry'?
Utter garbage!
Remind me to get my ears syringed

What's utter garbage? I made no technical claims; I reported my
preferences. If I'm to take this as a personal attack, then please go
fuck yourself.

I recently picked one of these up, not sure if it fits your bill but it
might, and it's well under your budget:

Integrated 2 channel preamp. 1 set of Balanced inputs. And it's best
feature is theater bypass mode, which basically switches it into amp
mode
