Oh, this issue is actually discussed in the replaygain FAQ : http://replaygain.hydrogenaudio.org/faq_noise.html (And the conclusion is exactly what you said : if you process a 16-bit recording through a 24-bit device, it shouldn't be a problem.) -- BlueScreenJunky

actually your brain that does most of the job. Some people can't hear the difference between 128kbps mp3 and lossless, but it's probably not because of their ears, just that they don't know how to listen ^^ -- BlueScreenJunky
