Hi Tom,
I wouldn't rule out a discussion forum here but I would suggest that
www.last.fm when used with the SlimScobbler plugin will get you a very long
way. There's already forums, and very a cool recommendations system etc.

be decompressed on the server and sent as PCM (or raw .wav file).
This uses up a large portion of the real bandwidth available

Hi DitherMan,
Thanks for the comprehensive post, there was some new stuff about 20 bit
DACs I hadn't seen explained here before. As regards volume controls they
have been discussed in some detail before so it would probably be worth
browsing the forum archive.

Well I may be missing something here, because there's no Audio entry on
my Player Settings.
OK, I'll step through this so you can double check . . .

Hi CardinalFang,
I'm not anything to do with http://audiofi.co.uk/ I just found it by
searching teh web and forums so I can't help with the extra info - however I
believe the guy that runs it is on these forums somewhere so you should get
a response :)

I've been curious about jitter for a while, and had a few thoughts, but I
don't know if they make sense.
First some observations:
1) jitter is not an issue in the digital connection over ethernet sending
FLAC/WAV data to the SB (here I mean that if it occurs and causes errors
these are detected
A lot of the basics are covered here:

One other significant advantage from the current perl implementation is that
it is relatively easy to make changes and there is an established community
building new features.
While this is also possible with open source in any language I believe it
would take a long time to rebuild the

That's where we disagree! :) While the product may be considered mature in
some sense (it is feature rich, stable, and relatively few bugs) I believe
it is a long way from the music
Hi,
I think the common view is that there is no reason why FLAC should be
different to WAV, so there are 2 questions:
1) Is the difference you hear actual or psychological? The best way to
determine this is to do a blind listening test. If you can successfully
distinguish between WAV and FLAC in
No problem,

Hi Again,
I'll take some time to explain my position (at least so you understand where
we disagree).

I AGREE: absolutely some CD players are much better than others

Here's a conversion script in perl.
It preserves most of the tags . . .
There's hardcoded stuff in there you'll have to change, but it's a short
script and should be 'reasonable' to understand. If you're interested then I
can help a little with the explanations.

PS No documentation -
Your compression ratio (45.5/64.74 = 70%) seems a but high - that said most
of my FLAC compressed files have a compression ratio around 55% so you're
not too far off.
I use FLAC.exe to compress my files with the maximum compression setting.
