require a complete board redesign. That's something a modder
can't achieve.
Adding an external DAC can improve the analog output through that DAC
but you will still be limited to playing 24/48 kHz files.
So in summary, if you want the best sound, get the Transporter. :)

Most, if not all, of the Transporter mods either increase distortion or
raise the noise floor.
Neither of those things are a good result. YMMV.

If you're using the digital out than it doesn't matter. The SPDIF
section is identical between the Classic and Receiver.
I use the analog outs on my Classic to my headroom headphone amp &
Sennheiser HD-580s.

but my 3808ci which costs 3x more has worse specs than the SB3 on the
D/A outputs:

Again we have qualified engineers that know how to treat a signal from
end to end in our designs... I think you can draw a conclusion about

I've never tried it, but I believe in a conversation I had with Sean he
said there was audible garbage due to the downsampling.
The downsampling is only there so you can hear... something. Officially
24/96 is NOT supported by the Squeezebox line.

I just checked with engineering and AFAWK there's nothing in the latest
firmware that would have effected the sound.
The update was mainly to improve syncing between players.

I have a Yamaha V1600 at home. I found that the SB analog outs with the
Yamaha Pure mode turned on sounds MUCH better than the on-board Yamaha
DAC.
I'd go analog if I were you.
