this discipline in academic setting, I tend to believe it
might be more complicated and subtle than what you describe. Anyway,
this could make a good subject for discussion over a glass of vintage
Bordeaux or Burgundy, opened and decanted some time prior to consumption
:-)

One thing I forgot to mention, it is a Mac I use to run SqueezeCenter. I
am in the process of migrating it to Asus EeePC, so let's see whether I
run into similar sorts of problems when upgrading versions.

One last suggestion. As someone mentioned before, it is always wise to
double check file types under the advanced tab.

setup. Frankly, I never compared the sound with different preamp volume
settings.

This would most likely be due to different ASRC methodologies -
implemented in software (whatever you use) or hardware (whatever it is
in Denon - a Crystal, AD or TI chip, or what else?)

. Meanwhile, if you upconvert to 192 kHz on the
computer side, it will be most likely software using rather different
math. There are reports from different (and rather respected)
manufacturers that even different current ASRC chip have different
sound signatures.

and abuses it plenty.
To sum it up, I'd be surprised if a firmware update could affect ANY
characteristics of SB or DUET S/PDIF out, but I guess only its
designers can rule out this possibility completely.
