The electronics are all of pretty high quality these days unless you go
out of your way to find awful stuff. Try this experiment to see what
is more important- switch between two CD players in your system and
see if you can hear a difference. Now switch between two sets of
speakers. The speake
Well, the beauty of a device like the Transporter is that you no longer
need a line stage (unless you have multiple sources, of course). The
best line stage is no line stage.
People will argue all sorts of things. But, trust me: most well-built
solid state amps these days are all very good. Yo

Really, in the end, it is all about your speakers and your room.
Changes to electronics, given the very high quality of sources (let's
assume quality CD player, SB3, SB3+DAC, or Transporter), the generally
excellent quality of even budget amplifiers, are real, but are not as
important as getting

I just got my new speakers, and all the wife said was "and you only
paid that much for them? Cool" Boy did I marry well :D
(although they are not $20k+...)

How does this apply to headphones?
My Transporter gets here on Monday, and I'm in the process of building
a Gilmore Dynahi amp. The next question is, will I see a substantial
improvement if I upgrade from my Grado SR-80s to, say, the Sennheiser
HD-650? What about something ultra-high-end like a G
My 2 cents (no pence here). I generally agree with Phil and Pat but its
important to be precise with language. What I think you are after is to
have source, amplification and speakers all commensurate in performance.
Otherwise one of these elements is going to act as a bottleneck. Not

On a tangent, I've heard a pair of $40K speakers being driven by an iPod
and $5K worth of preamp/amp sound worse than a pair of $200 speakers
being driven by $40K worth of electronics ($25K of which was the
amp)...and a $40K system where each component made up roughly equal
parts of the budget sou

errm two schools of thought then:
speakers +£
and
source +£
Both seem to have there plus points, so not really any defenate route
to go down - basically have a play and see what fits best - cool
I think at the moment my pre amp is the week link and then DAC, & going

They start with a "good" (no names mentioned) approx. 5000 euro system.
Then they try 3 different 1000 euro upgrades:
1. speakers
2. amp
3. cd-player

IMHO, each component affects sound differently:
digital sources seem to remove realism and solidity
amps seem to add noise, slacken bass
speakers add mumble
Each stage adds a greater amount of distortion than the last, however
the type of distortion goes from less to more tolerable, as it become
I am of the opposite persuasion. Sources all sound pretty much the
same. Put the money in speakers. They are the components with the
most different sound from one model/maker to another, even at the same
price level.
Don't neglect speaker placement in the room and some acoustic treatment

I'd tend to spend most money on the source believing that garbage in
