I promise I will one day.
I would be interested in that. I would like to know if this DAC could
be used as a DAC+headphone amp of high quality (input: receiver;
headphone: AKG K701).

The Caiman has a very good Class A Headphone amp. Stan Beresford claims
it drives the K701s very

I will add a review on the headphone amp part next week.
At first glance (I mean just a few hours) it
Thanks Labarum and Themis. I'll wait for Themis review.
A bit more background. My main system is what you could call (maybe) a
modest audiophile setup: transporter Ayre AX-7e Audio Vital Animato

sound.

Well, if you simply need a pre/dac for the SB, the remote is certainly a
point.
I was wondering whether you could ask M.Beresford: perhaps he has a way
of fitting a motorized volume knob (with a remote) ?
Unfortunately, all dacs (that I'm aware of) with remote controls cost
quite a bit
An number of us have asked Stan about a remote volume control. He thinks
a motorised pot would come be very expensive in a box such of bargain
price, and its inclusion would take the cost above that at which he
could sell.
He has observed that the DAC chip has itself a digital volume control.
Interesting, thank you :)

Cheers, basically only thinking of it as an old good quality pre/dac for
my SB.
You may have confused things a little for me now saying how pleased you
are with the Caiman and how well it performs ;)

_Hardware_description_
On the front of the Beresford Caiman, there is a on/off button, four
input selecting buttons, a headphone input and a volume knob which
controls the headphones' and the variable (pre) outputs. On the back
there are four digital inputs (2 RCA S/PDIF, 1 toslink and 1 USB)
Ok, if I consider I'm not becoming deaf, this is probably one of the
best dacs I've listened to under 1000#8364;. And as good as most dacs
under 1500#8364;. No point in comparing further up in the upper price
tags, it'll become cruel. ;)
A more precice review soon.

I hope you've got it plugged in and playing in the meantime. It takes a
while to settle down. The first few hours are 'interesting' so don't
judge it
Altough I agree that some burn-in may be usefull, especially for
speakers, I never noticed that burn-in process -strongly -alter the
equipment's sonic signature.
What I noticed, however, is that certain subtle characteristics of some
equipment, only become apparent (can be noticed) after a few
This dac looks really interesting. I like new designs.
Can someone tell me please what are the sonic differences between the
fixed and the variable line outputs ?

If I drive my Quad 405-2 from the fixed out and use just a few dB
attenuation in the SB3 digital volume control the sound is a little
clearer, but not by much. The insertion

Worthwhile improvement to the SB3?
If so, in what way?
'Better' than a DM (however you may interpret 'better')?
Interested to hear your views.
