Cheap is relative. What's your budget?
For under $1k you could get a Beresford DAC which would function as
DAC/Preamp/Headphone Amp. Run the variable outputs into the above
referenced Audio Engine power speakers. Some decent cables and you are
in good shape.

Definitely check out audiogon.com if you havent already. One thing you
will soon learn about the world of hifi is that people like to upgrade.
That means plenty of high quality, lightly used gear for sale. If I
were you I'd be looking at a used integrated amp, like the Arcam A65. I
think you
For integrated amps, you might also consider the Rotel RA-04 or the
Marantz PM6002. Probably tricky to find these used right now, but the
new prices are not terrible.

You might consider headphones... especially as you say this is for
mellow/bedroom listening. Before you blow this idea off, consider:
1) for the price of a still-low end (from an audiophile perspective)
stereo you could get a very nice DAC with a headphone amp built in, or
separates, plus great
Try and Trends 10.1 amp, a pair of Silverline Minuets (both used on
Audiogon), Kimber Timbre cables, and anticable speaker cables.
I have this in my bedroom and the sound is wonderful. A big step up on
the amp is the new Virtue Audio One. Not much more money for much
better,bigger sound.

Hey...It's all very personal mate and it does, to a degree, depend on
what you are willing to spend.
You didn't mention where you live and whether there is a used market
for hifi ...
My bedroom setup used to be sb3--Musical Fidelity XA-1 integrated
(used)-- Quad 11L speakers + vdh cables. Very
In 2006 I purchased a pair of Usher S-520 bookshelf speakers as a
Christmas present for my sister and her husband, both musicians. Ushers
usually garner very good audiophile reviews and are modestly priced.
Full beautiful sound with impeccable build quality...YMMV.

loud for what it is but not the greatest sound.
so with that, you should know why im

You have to have a pretty top notch system before upgrading the dac will
help. Of course this is just my opinion. I use older BW's and a new
Yamaha RX
Frankly, I'm rather confused by your post. You speak of modded power
supply and external dacs, while at the same time just wanting something
cheap without specifying what that means? Good sound doesn't by
definition cost a fortune, but if you're finding the stock SB3
insufficient then it seems
audiophile and cheap shouldnt be used in the same sentence. after
reading how much certain equipment costs though I figure I had to put it
as I am just trying to get a really damn good system. This isn't for
just going to sleep to music but it is the prime location i want a
really nice 2 channel
OK, but its still difficult to advice. What is your current amp/speaker.
What have you heard that you like or dislike?
The problem with active speakers, and in particular those with digital
inputs sa the Avi's, is that they do not cater for incremental upgrades.
Its all or nothing. So no matter
no one has any other recommendations huh?

I wouldn't really bother with an outboard dac myself. Although I did
buy a transporter for a number of reasons including the better DAC.

kllngtme, you are on a well trodden path to better audio from your SB3.
i started with a SB3,then added an outboard NOS dac(Moodlabs
Concept).
i toyed with the alternative power supply idea but decided it really
wasn't worth the hassle.
with the sb3 etc plugged into my main system the end result
First of all, audiophile and cheap don't usually go together.
I don't have anything near an audiophile setup, so I'm not going to
really push that end of the spectrum.
The Audioengine A5's have gotten a lot of good reviews here, and for
typical high end bedroom listening should be fine (but try
well i wasnt sure if you could take the speakers apart from the boom
besides i already just bought the sb3 and it has an alarm and stuff, its
perfect for the bedroom...

I opine that Audioengine speakers are no match for redwine modded SB3.
You need something like the Adam active speakers or the Dynaudio desktop
speakers. I personally do not understand the near obsession with the
Audioengine speakers, they sounded rather boomy to me. They may be good
for their
Anyone have any suggestions?
I just bought a SB3 used with a redwine modded ElPak WM075-1950
powersupply.
I have this going into an old JVC stereo receiver that is on its way
out. Can someone suggest a good cheap start of a really nice setup?
I want this for my bedroom and going to sleep.
Speakers are a very personal choice.. but I can say that bigger isn't
always better. I would go check out some dealers.
One nice option for a good bedroom setup is to skip the amp and speaker
setup and get a pair of self-amped monitors. Audioengine A5 speakers
are amazing for the money ($350
yea i tried getting used to the vortexbox. i suppose i should give it
another try. even if i were to skip a whole amp and go with powered
speakers shouldn't i get an external dac?
