IF the minimum tow rope length is 181 ft, how can the minimum aircraft
separation be 200ft?
And, does the trailer regs say the rear axle/tyre must actually touch the
ground? If not, hang another 4m from the rear, 1m above the ground.
Earth needs more minds, not signs.

Its amazing how we all get to bust the rules sometimes. This 200 feet
separation rule is one that I think we all have busted!!
Unfortunately, its not always the intent of a rule that is taken when a
rule is looked at in a court of law. What the rule actually says is
often given more weight!
Hello all,
This discussion appears to be going along the lines of flying by numbers and
coming up with so called fixes.
Fly safely and be smart. The opposite side of a thermal is approx 200'.
Thats close enough, unless you have an exemption to fly closer, formation

Sheesh!!! You are a real Puck.
Good stuff though. Cases have been won in the traffic area on less.

The system misses out on teaching you something and it is _your_ fault.
That's your usual rubbish, Mike.

Roger and Jason,
Thanks for the good ideas. We may be able shift the axle and relocate the
spare - at the moment it's right in the front. Neither are major changes
but we had a bad experience with the DG-505 trailer after we shifted the
axle so we're a little wary.

Long glider trailers generally require significant draw bar load to make them
stable. Rule of thumb says 10% of trailer weight, but I know you can generally
get away with less. On a big trailer I have found that 60kg is usually enough.
On a small to medium car this will require load transfer
Acknowledging all the comments are valid, surly choosing a suitable tow
vehicle must also be important?

You fell into the 'precision' trap of converting a number to +/- 5 m into
something +/- 1/10,000 of a foot! Only a difference of 6 parts in a million!
180 - 200 ft is close enough, allowing for the bow in a tape measure at 45
- 55 kt.
200 ft is 3 - 4 wingspans depending on your
Try registering your trailer away from big city RTAs - as it seems too much
effort for them to work it all out or they try and help you. In the old
days when the local police did RTA work in many towns they would not even
walk out to look at the trailer - just look out the window of the police
Being a person who tows Short Wing Kookaburras around the country I

but thankfully it hasn't happened yet. A fellow KPST member has recently
built a new trailer for his Kooka (GNZ) and when registering the trailer we

Absolutely right - I tow glider trailers around with a Landcruiser!
On the other hand there are plenty of glider pilots out there who don't have a
wide choice of vehicles to use. In the past I've been known to tow a 2 seater
trailer with a Subaru - I wouldn't recommend it :-(
