Surely a backup electric vario is a more useful backup than a mechanical? With
its own emergency battery you get a backup audio and averager as well as the
needle. With all the stress that goes with a power failure having to stare at
the instrument would make things worse.

I think Luke was responding to Bernard's second post which is congratulatory
of the aircraft, not the pilots. From what I read, Luke was making the point
that the 3 pilots in question would have placed regardless of their choice

There is a trial edition, but it is for the most recent version (which I
think is V8). It only works in simulator mode though until you register it -
SeeYou Mobile will work but give you a nag screen.
