Aloha, My randfather Jose da Silva Sampaio born 26 Sept 1817, Rabo
de Peixe, His mother's name was Maria de Jesus (her parents were Maria
Estrella and Manuel Furtado). He was baptized on 3 Oct 1817, at the
Church Bom Jesus, Rabo de Peixe, S. Miguel. My question is, since he
was born out of
I live here in Hawaii, and working on our family genealogy for over 30
plus years, this is what happened with our last names and possibly
with other families. Many times, the Silva Sampaio family would just
be known on records as Silva. Other times just Sampaio (mispelled
many times) Or for the
Sorry to jump in on this thread, but I noticed a reference to a Martins Gouveia
family from Rabo de Peixe. I am looking for information on my Grandmother's
line from that area and she went by Martins only here in the States while I now
know that she had brothers who used both last names. One
Thank you Eric and Dano,
I am trying to narrow down the part of Sao Miguel where my great-great
grandparents lived on Sao Miguel. The family names were Linhares and
Rodrigues. This will hopefully narrow things down a bit to help my
search. Thank you.
Eric.

How do you arrive at the conclusion that Silva Sampaio is Jose's
father's surname rather than his mother's? Portuguese custom of that
era permitted a person to use a surname of choice. Records are replete
with individuals who selected surnames of mothers, fathers,
grandparents, or distant
The book, Portuguese Spinner, just arrived today and I got a better
look at the photo of the FURTADO Family.
According to Babelfish, the Portuguese word for grandmother is: Avo'.
The caption of the photo on page 110 says: Vovo'. Babelfish could
not help me translate Vovo'.
Can someone
Avó is more like grandmother. Vovó is more like grandma.
Avô is grandfather. Vovô is more like grandpa.

As for an out of wedlock child, you might find a legitimatization if you
are real lucky. If not, it could be the surname of his godparents, his
adoptive family, a

I just wanted to tell you all that Cheryl had them put this Map on the New
Bedford Whaling Museum store website. If you have any family from New
Bedford, you will appreciate this map. It is 24 x 36 so easy to read
streets, etc. The cost was only $10...the shipping a little higher but I

Ary, thank you, what you have given me is enough to confirm what I thought.
Joao de Sousa Silva and Maria do Rego ( AKA Maria do Espirito Santo) admit
that this Ritta in this record is their legitimate daughter.
Rita born in 1812 is legitimatized 29 years later. I added a few comments
below.
Thanks, Cheri!
From what I have been able to find, Grandma is the mother of Maria do
Esprito Santo and the mother-in-law of Caetano Moniz FURTADO. This
would mean that Vovo' is Rosa de Jesus, the mother of Ermelinda
CARREIRO (NUNES).
In the other book, I found a baptism record of the following:
Hi Richard,Glad I have put my two cents to work!...Now remember! Whenever you run into a difficult record to read I ama reasonable source for it!!..Good luck.Ary.

Although at the BPL center, you can download it free as a smaller version.
Also at the BPL is that you can view it with its magnification
Jeffrey,
Interesting site to peruse but there is nothing to compare with being able
to see the whole map in front of you. I really did get a great bargain
looking at what they charge for the map!
Think I will check out what other maps this site might have as I am
interested in a Boston map
I do have to say... it is time for a happy dance!!! [?] I found three
people (not two) when I went to the cemetery. I know I said that I would
be a second set of eyes; however, I was out there last week and (at first)
I looked and could not find the graves.
As I said in a previous email, the
