Mike,
Is your email directed to me? I never wrote a book. I did write a little
booklet on tracing your Portuguese roots and it's posted on the Azores
GenWeb. I just went there and it works. Here it is again:

Hi Mary,
We have a couple of expressions. "You get what you pay for." And "You
can't get something for nothing."
Was this the DNA test that Ancestry was giving out for free last November?
And they started to get the results in April?
You're not getting any results on Ancestry because there are
Ally,
I thought your mother was Portuguese.
Test the older generation. You have 25% of your grandparents DNA. Your mom
has 50% of that DNA (at least on your maternal grands side).
The cost of upgrading your mom vs. testing you is the same.

Mike,
On the Azores GenWeb. Here's a link (it has all the archives). You want
the Horta archive. There's a form letter where you fill in the blanks.

I think you can ask for a simple photocopy and not pay for the
certification.

Mike,
You are going to have to wait until the 1890s Faial records come online to
verify them yourself, or write to the archives and request those records,
or hire a research to obtain them for you.

That is wonderful! I hope to find out some more information -- find the little
kernels of truth buried in the family stories. Maybe even find out if I have
any living relatives still there. My dad was there back in the late 50's or
early 60's and there were at least two of my grandmother's sibl
I used his email in one of his postings on the site. Someone else on the site
had recommended him. Once you contact him. He will give you the prices for
certified copy fees and also his fees. They are reasonable though.

Cheri,
Thank youI have a coupon from when my Mother did her original test last
summer.
Should I pay the upgrade for her later, or, should I use the coupon on me, and
test the portuguese side?
I guess what I should ask is what is the cost of the upgrade for my Mother vs
the cost of dong m

I was solicited by ancestry.com for a free DNA test that may be similar to the
FTDNA family finder.
They had to send me a new kit because of inconclusive results. Those results

No surprise really--61% "Scandinavian" (I assume that's my Scotish and Irish),
32% "Southern European"
I have a question about the island of Faial, my family had a farm, is it
possible to narrow down the villages your searching by knowing if certain
areas of the island is more suitable for farming?

On the Neps website I think I've found a good possibility, my great

Ally, yes Family Finder would be good. Your Mom's samples are stored for 25
years. They will pull the vials and run Family Finder on them. So no need
for new cheek swabs. Let me know if you decide to go ahead with this so I
can get you a coupon. Cheri

Question about our answer below..My Mother had her mtDNA tested. So
would it be beneficial to do the Family Finder on her? Would that be an
upgrade to the DNA already on file or would she need to complete a new test?

A recommendation;
Joao just finished obtaining records for me as well. The first steps in
breaking through my current brick wall. He found exactly what I requested and
was extremely quick getting my records. I thought it would be slower, like
those of us in Oklahoma.
I got a packet today, but
