Rentals in VFC seem hard to find. We use an apartment near the main plaza
just around the corner from the Matriz. It's an upstairs apartment with
three bedrooms owned by a local travel agent, Pedro Geronimo. It rents
for around 80 Euros per night in the summer months. The location is

Hi Fred,
I just took a quick look and see your people are from Bretanha. My GGF was
from there as well. I am on my way to church shortly but will take a further
look this afternoon. I see a possible connection but need to check it out. I
have George Pacheco's book and will look and get a trace
The people I'm around (southern California Portuguese) pronounce Lopes as
if it rhymes with ropes. I seem to remember the sport announcers
pronouncing Los Angeles baseball player Davey Lopes rhyming with ropes.
But I was a teenager back then.

I reposted the message for Marie Shantz. I don't need the info, so please
repost the info for Marie here. I inadvertently deleted her email address

Hi Richard,
Thanks so much. Just to complete the picture as I know it. Rosa Tavares, my

His basic info is as follows:

Cheri,
I remember Davey Lopes well. For years I thought he was Portuguese because his
name ended in an S. But, he isn't.

Gayle M,
I only knew he was Cape Verdean. I don't know how much. I think someone
here said half. Wikipedia gives the pronunciation as rhyming with
ropes. Apparently, he's a pretty private guy. Don't see much on his
personal life by doing a Google search, but I didn't try hard either. Lots

I have come to seek wisdom from the group. Recently, I have hit a wall
with one of my branches. The ancestor nearest me is Mary Agnes Silva
(married William Perry). She was born in Buffalo, NY Jan 24, 1868. Her
parents were Joseph Silva and Mary Roderick. I have no records of birth,

John M,
You have Anglicized names. Mary is Maria. Silva may be spelled as Sylva.
William is Guilherme and Perry is Pereria. Joseph is Jose and Roderick is
Rodrigues. All very common. You have an ancestor born in a hospital in
1868? I would see what sources are available for NY.
Ideas for
I do not know what NY had for records but I find it hard to believe that
someone was born in a hospital in 1868. Most people were born at home in
that time frame. I would see if NY has birth records for the year and search
any number of combinations of names to try and find her birth. Most births
John,
Also, Silva sometimes was shortened from Silveira.

Thanks Cheri,
I have indeed included the traditional names during my hunt. I am simply
hitting the brick wall. Without a specific island I can't search in
reverse order. Typically I can use sibling info of the ancestor in
question, unfortunately I have no info about any. At this point the

You may want to consider turning to DNA. If an overwhelming group of your

Hi Rick,
This info and links are great! You must have great eyesight because I can
barely make out much on these documents. The one question you asked is
something I don't know but might become clear as more documents are
released or I might connect with someone's tree. Thanks again for your time

I am awaiting DNA results as we speak. I have already joined the Azores group
