Yes, I'm aware of the FamilySearch records and that's what I have been
using. However, the first marriage book which may have included his
marriage is not available (at least online, I will have to check with the
Parish in Brazil next time I'm there). Same goes for the very earliest
birth
The 1880 census for San Mateo County, Township 4 (near Half Moon Bay) shows
a Manuel Cardoze married to Catherine with a bunch of children (that's a
highly technical genealogical term). I was looking at this because I
remembered a certain enumerator didn't just write Azores or Western

Seeing “Picho” reminds me of some of the 1880 Census records on the East Coast
that wrote “Pekoe”, like the tea!! Rosemarie

My Santa Maria line has many Andrade. I don't see the name you're looking for,
although, my Andrade line has Coelho in it.
Baltazar Velho de Andrade and his wife, Catarina Velho Melo had a daughter,
Catarina Coelho Melo married in Sept. of 1697, Matias Furtado Leite, he was

Cheri,
How many of our ancestors were said to be from Portugal, when they arrived in
the US, when, in fact, they were from the Azores, Madeira, or Cape Verde???
Realistically, in the natural order of things, it is much more plausible that
the Maia that was mentioned, was on the same island
I'm going off of what Joseph said. And in my research in Vila Franca, when
they said Maia, it meant the one on Sao Miguel. I haven't seen records in
Vila Franca where they reiterate Sao Miguel island over and over. They
weren't that worldly in the 1840s. They way that Joseph wrote what he found
That is where I stumbled across them. I just got off the phone with them
and they are going to check the vault for the church records to see if
there is any further in.

It worked. I had found that record via Familysearch.org, but of course
without the actual image. I wasn't sure about the spelling because it was
listed as Cardoze. Caroline is the name of my great grandmother. That is
why I was looking for what newspaper possibly would have an obituary for
Hi Margaret,
Thanks for translation. Are you sure about the year? I'm only asking
because the record was found in the baptismo's for 1793-1818, and I do not
think my GGG Grandmother lived to over 130 years old nor had children at
that age. 1811 sounds better.

I came across this entry on familysearch.org. I wonder how often did people
from Azores like in this case Sao Miguel move to Madeira? Was it common?

I wouldn't say it's super common. But it did happen.

I don't remember the story of the attraction to Madeira, but my own grandfather's brother from Terceira also moved to Madeira.I've done a ton of research in the past for people with Madeira ancestry and I could probably count on one hand all the number of people from the Azores I have seen in
