There was a church of S. Mateus in Ponta Delgada. It was not the same
church as Sao Jose, and it was located no Largo Martires da Patria, or
Campo da Conceicao. It no longer exists as it was demolished and gave place
to the garden of Padre Jose Joaquim de Sena Freitas.

Yes, it was originally S. Mateus before it became S. Jose.

Well,
Since I have been spending the time to try and get the tombstones online
for the Azores, I thought of the idea that it would be super easy if I just
reached out to the source directly.
So I contacted either the cemetery (if it was big enough that I could find

I made a mistake. St. Paul's Church in San Pablo, CA. My children
attended St. Joseph's Catholic School in Pinole, CA.
We also have St. Joseph's Church in Winters, CA, where I live now.

Does anyone know if the church of São Matheus is now São José on Ponta Delgada?
I have a person who was baptized in São Matheus but I don't see any records
for such a church.
Maybe it has another name now? Thanks .

Great. Work,Jeremy. One question.. What if the death record says "buried in a
public cemetery which I assume there were no funds for the burial. I would
assume a cemetery close to church they are buried from??

Jeremy,
IF you have a wooden or rubber stopper under a door in your house that is a
wedge. That same object in Portuguese is called a wedge. There are other
examples but I am keeping it simple.
I have lots of relatives that were Cunhas in Santa Maria and when they came to
the US in the 1800s
Jeremy, I don't know if she meant that the name was changed to 'wedge' just
that wedge is the translation for Cunha in my dictionary!

You need the freguesia (village) to start searching on Faial. There are 12
or 13 villages there. If you don't know which one, then you aren't quite
ready to start searching in the Azores yet.
Here's a how-to of sources to try to get your freguesia:

Good luck!
There were/are many Cunhas in the Half Moon Bay area (the middle school
bears the name). I never heard of any using an Americanized version--even
though there could be problems pronouncing it. However, if it was chased to
something completely different it would be hard to know if you didn't know
Based on the information you provided I think you should seriously
concentrate researching records from the island of Faial.

Not so bizarre...it's a literal translation. A few of those do occur.

I'm sure Mr. Almeida's list is not comprehensive. As titled, he found only
anglicized names in California. None from New England, Canada, nor Hawaii,
etc.
