Liz,
Mine are from Lajes do Pico. I guess these names are fairly common. Jose
Silvieira Brum married a Maria Brum and their daughter married a Antonio
Pereira Dutra and had my Maria Dutra.
We may still be related somewhere. My tree is on FamilyTreeDNA.
Happy hunting,Pat

The first side note gives her name as Maria Rosa de Moura and say she
married Antonio de Moura ; I think the date is 9 Feb 1920. It says he is
son of Manuel (Inacio is my best guess) de Moura and Jacinta Julia dos

Bottom right, Maria. Lots of questions on this one. Apologies.
1. To me it looks like one side note says her name is Maria Roza and the other
sidenote says Maria
Gayle,
Good to know Reunion has a Baptism event. For programs that allows people
to "create" their own event, people need to be careful. When a Gedcom is
created, some of those created events aren't Gedcom compliant and create
havoc when imported. My genealogy program has no event for
Cheri,
Reunion has a baptism event but also allows you to create a custom event which
you can name yourself.

Sam,
Those that grew up in the Azores or are more familiar with the history
would have to chime in on how a child of an "adulterer" would be viewed
over there.

Hi Walter,
When starting out, I was guided to using the Bef/Aft/Abt system to have the
most concrete info/reference in the Birth/Marriage/Death date blocks.

Bef 25 Mar 1678 put baptismal location
Abt 1678
Yes, I notice that too, although I did also see some women born out of wedlock
who did marry. Perhaps, they were later legitimized and that changed their
status?

Sam,
One thing I noticed while indexing the Sao Jorge obits is that so many women
who had children out of marriage were daughters of women who also had children
out of wedlock

Interesting how they recorded this stuff. Cheri, or anyone, do you know if
there was a stigma attached to the child or to the parents for that matter? I
found it somewhat surprising that in the record I found it stated that the
husband had been “away for over 300 days” Certainly leaves no
Just a couple of thoughts when applying dates.
When you have a baptism date and you want to apply a birth date it is more
appropriate to use “about” or “circa”. That generally means the date is close
to that date and by adding a note the date is based on the baptism. The more
