I'm not knocking Bob De Mello, but at the time he did his passaportes to Hawaii book, he made some assumptions that he carried throughout the book. I don't think his grasp of the Portuguese language was all that good. So he may have assumed that no father listed meant that the father had died.

Hi, Every child or adult that is baptized is also exorcised. Before the baptism there is the exorcism. Any baptized Catholic has been exorcised. All rushed baptisms performed in the homes were later on completed in the church by the priest's performing the exorcism and applying the holy oils.
