This is very nice :)
Do I read correctly that Estevão's father is João Alvares? And what is his
mother's first name?
I'm following the paternal line António Cabral -> Estevão Alvares -> João
Alvares -> ...
You wouldn't happen to have any more information on that line?
Cheers

Thank you. I will now check to see how big of a mess I have in my database.
Upon further analysis I may have more questions.

Hi Doreen,
On the Francisca's baptism is : Francisca filha de "Francisco digo" Manoel

On the mariage of Francisco Cardoso Jaques : he is not widow of Francisca
Rosa but : "filho de outro do mesmo nome e de sua mulher Francisca Rosa.
This Francisco is the brother of Manoel Cardoso
Thanks for the tips and information about the Silveira neighborhood!
After looking at the Lajes page on the NEPS site, I found a very likely

in New Bedford, her father was Joseph de Brum and mother was Isabella. I

Cheri,
I understand what you mean. You probably noticed the Manual spelling

I'm not knocking Bob De Mello, but at the time he did his passaportes to
Hawaii book, he made some assumptions that he carried throughout the book.
I don't think his grasp of the Portuguese language was all that good. So
he may have assumed that no father listed meant that the father had died.

And here is your answer:
Manoel, born- Jan 25- 1846, bap- Feb 9- 1846, Padrinhos- Manoel da Costa e

say the father of Manuel is unknown. But it does say Maria Jacinta is
single, native of Mosteiros and the daughter of
JR,
Thanks for the translation and going the extra mile to get the baptismal
for Manoel Raposo. I was guessing Ignacio or Innocencio for the wife's
father's surname on the marriage. This priest had an odd way of not
connecting the bottom of his letters.
The baptismal is helpful. It is
I believe he's natural da vila de Tomar, filho de Francisco de Fonseca de

The books from that parish will eventually be

online.

Hi John. I thought about that , but not being familiar with the names of

I will try to have a priest telling me what could be the meaning of that margin
note. Then I will let everybody know about :)

I don't know how helpful this Wikipedia article is on exorcism in the
Catholic Church: http://goo.gl/Tmpvs0
I wonder if the baby was epileptic and having a seizure? Or born with a
deformity that was considered demonic? Maybe the ears of the baby were
kind of pointed and the eyebrows somewhat
Hi,
Every child or adult that is baptized is also exorcised. Before the
baptism there is the exorcism. Any baptized Catholic has been exorcised.
All rushed baptisms performed in the homes were later on completed in the
church by the priest's performing the exorcism and applying the holy oils.
That is a pretty good article, Cheri, however, it is quite general, and
doesn't deal with infants and baptism. The best explanation in this case
that I've seen, is posted by Margaret, and does correspond w/ what I've
been taught. I think your example of a baby that perhaps was ill w/
seizures
Hi Margaret, that is an excellent explanation. As for my earlier remarks,
this was the first time that I encountered the mention of exorcism in what
should have a baptism, and I was taken aback. We don't know what the
condition of the child was, but, it must have been grave, for the parents
Karen, this is a tough read for a baptism. The margin appears to be at
least in part in Latin. It mentions an impediment and there was an
exorcism. The narrative starts as you say: Miguel son of Manuel Machado
Gomes and his wife Maria Vieira, natives, residents, and parishioners of
Ribeira
There are people with Cabo attached to their last name in the Ribeira
Grande area, which includes the parish of Conceicao, Sao Pedro and the
matriz of NS da Estrela.
