All good and nice. Could you please add this to Jim's bug report? In here it
will be lost and forgotton withing a few days...
Sure, although I was hoping to get some feedback, that my summary and
suggestions were in fact correct!

Really? In cases like this I do it the other way around. I would
never want Page and Plant to appear in the Browse Artists list,
only Robert Plant and Jimmy Page. And I would want this album to
appear under *both*. To achieve this, I tag as follows:

I use TXXX ALBUMARTIST a lot, and SqueezeCenter correctly uses this

Great, I'll use that instead of TPE2 and the useBandAsAlbumArtist

I think ALBUMARTIST isn't even a standard tag, but an iTunes thing.
Not an iTunes thing - they use BAND I believe. iTunes is particularly poor in
that if you do have an album artist or band tag, it doesn't display it as the
artist in the artist list.
ALBUMARTIST is imho mapped to BAND, as does
ALBUMARTIST is imho mapped to BAND, as does eg. mp3tag as well.
mp3tag is my main tag editor. The author did change a recent developer build
(v2.39h) to make TPE2 map to ALBUMARTIST. However, this change was reverted
a couple of days later (v2.39i). ALBUMARTIST is a TXXX frame. They are
One thing I was thinking might solve a number of problems would be to
make sure every album has an ALBUMARTIST (forgetting for a moment the
issue of whether or not (and how) to map ID3v2's TPE2/Band tag to the
ALBUMARTIST role). When an explicit ALBUMARTIST isn't given in the
tags, then the

I think what you are saying is that every album (or song on an album) would
have an albumartist role in the contributors table. I'm not sure that helps,
as SC can still display
TXXX means no standard tag. It's whatever you want to call it. Create a
MYVERYOWNTAG and it will be stored in TXXX.
Yes, I know that, but SqueezeCenter is written to look for a TXXX (ALBUMARTIST)
tag. It's an arbitrary tag, but one that SC specifically looks for. I use

At the end of the day, the counts are not a big thing; it's just I have
a habit of spotting little things ;)
You're right, the counts aren't terribly important. Which is probably
why the discrepancies have pretty much been ignored.
You can count the 'artists' for an
For albums. You never want to see all the artists listed in the
by-line for an album. You don't want to see 'The Time-Life Treasury of
Christmas' by 30 different artists. Nor do you want to see the
Santana album 'Supernatural' by 9 different artists.
For a few track artists, it's quite nice,
I'm a little less uncertain about BAND, which is widely used like album
artist, but maybe could be considered as a real contributor to a song, rather
than presentation/grouping.
I think ALBUMARTIST isn't even a standard tag, but an iTunes thing. More
standard is BAND or TPE2. ALBUMARTIST is

Yes, it has been added this week. And computers are stupid: how should they
know that the above in fact are only two?
Yes, computers are stupid, but they are very good at math, given the right
instruction ;)
SC already
Joking aside, I don't understand your comment.
Artist and albumartist are different contributor types. And as they aren't
identical neither they're three different in this case. It's probably
related to the VA searching issue I'm currently trying to understand: if I
have a compilation with
What about the composer? Would you consider him a contributor or not?
Maybe only the wording is wrong and we're not talking about Artists here,
but Contributors. Or the count is wrong as it does not only count the
Artist, but the other contributors too. Anyway we change it I'm sure

In the WebUI, if I browse to the album Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon
Garfunkel, it shows this as 1 album with 13 songs by 3 artists.
It's a little strange to say 3 artists. It is because I have tagged all the
songs with:
ARTIST=Paul Simon
ARTIST=Art Garfunkel
ALBUMARTIST=Simon
