Yes it is true that RenderLayers are a bit of a mix up in Blender where it
is actually Layers/Scenes manipulation and passes at the same time, which
makes complicated the way to add another pass (except by going through a
mat overall).
But I was trying to keep things simple and stick to the actual
Hi,
You actually told me the reason why we have openEXR MultiLayer (exr) is
because some third party software do not support Multilayer properly.
I wouldn't have said that. At the time there was no other program using openEXR
multilayer at all. I asked ILM to propose a standard for it, but
yes sure. Except not just for EXR but any other file format would be nice.

Hi,
If we stick to exr then we can save out Z values, Index masks, speed vectors,
and raw HDR values without need of worrying how to convert this. Not to forget
all color space issues.

True. And I think that's the only format supporting 32bpc in Blender. (Or I
didn't find how to enable it with Tiff)

Before I start commenting, let me say that I am with you and also
think that the way Render Layers are rendered could get some
improvements.
I fully agree that it would be very useful to have an option to
automatically render every pass of every render layer to separate
folder without
I have however a few questions:
Note that all my points are in case you are NOT using Multi-Layer and NOT
using compositor
What do you mean saying that Only the first RenderLayer gets rendered?
When you render to MultiLayer exr - all passes of all render layers
get stored.
Let say you
Hi Francois,
I can't follow your text really.
Instead of explaining why you need it, or calling it better or more useful,
just write down a neutral and very precise specification of how it looks what
you want? It seems to me you like some Openexr file version that's between the

I know this isn't an answer for all your problems and it doesn't fix
the need of a composite node to render animation, but have you tried
creating a node group for passes?
You can create a generic node group with each pass connected to one
file output node mapped to a relative directory (for
Ton:
I think he's talking about how tedious is to output individual passes
as image sequences using file-output nodes.
For instance, storing 5 passes to tga sequences requires you to add 5
file-output nodes, set them up with the right path, and it still
requires the presence of a composite node
Francois,
I agree with you 100%. I recently made a short film with roughly 80
shots, 5-10 renderlayers per shot, 3-5 passes per renderlayer.
All these image/pass/renderlayer sequences had to be saved via
FileOutput node.
Imagine setting up (changing filepaths) in over 1000 Fileoutput Nodes
;-)
Ton :
My bad for calling it better or whatever, I'm sorry that's all you
understood and remember from my mail, in which I tried to explain each
point of the current process and how I wish it to be !
But maybe the best way to understand it is if you try to render each pass
into different image

Hi everyone,
Yet another proposal, so I know nobody have times for proposal and stuff
but since I passed the entire day linking renderlayers passes to fileOut
one by one, my head hurts ! So I have to give it a shot !
Once again, I guess I'm the only one using Blender with other apps because

You should be able to do this with the File Output node if I'm not mistaken.
